Obituary- Joy, Silas
Silas F. Joy
SILAS F. JOY – Funeral services for the late Silas F. Joy, who died Monday night, at his farm home 4 miles north of Rossville, were held today at 2:30 from the Rossville Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. G. C. Albin and the body laid to rest in Olive Branch cemetery northwest of Rossville.
The service was attended by hundreds of sorrowing friends and neighbors who had known the sterling worth of the deceased gentleman and his splendid Christian character as exemplified in his daily life during his forty-five years residence in Rossville township.
Mr. Joy was a native of Michigan, where he was born, in Kalamazoo, May 11, 1848. He had passed his 75th year by 4 months and 6 days when death called. He came to Kansas in 1868 and the past forty-five years of his life had been spent in the vicinity of Rossville.
He was one of the founders of the Olive Branch U. R. church north of Rossville and continued a faithful worker until the membership dwindled away thru removals and the church was taken over by other hands. Last February he transferred his membership to the Rossville Methodist church.
On February 26, 1879, he was married to Rebecca Franklin. This union was blessed with four children, two of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Joy passed away March 20, 1894. Some time later he was married to Mrs. Rachel K. Parks, who with his children by the first marriage, Mr. Owen Joy of Oklahoma City and Mrs. L. O. Parr, of Silver Lake survive. One sister, Mrs. L. V. Odle, of Topeka, also survives.
