Joseph Dewey Barney
SILVER LAKE — Joseph Dewey Barney, 87, Silver Lake, died Thursday, July 24, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Barney owned and operated the Rossville Barber Shop in the 1920s and 1930s. He later farmed and was an electrician for Kansas Power and Light Co. from 1936 to 1946. He was an electrician for the State Hospital from 1954 to 1964. He was a Navy veteran of World War I.
He was born Sept. 18, 1898, at Silver Lake, the son of J. William and Vilinda Wyatt Barney. He lived in the Silver Lake and Rossville communities most of his life.
Mr. Barney was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church, Lake Lodge No. 50, AF&AM, and served on the Silver Lake City Council during the 1970s. He also was a former member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville and served on the Rossville City Council during the 1940s.
He married Alice Belle Redmon on Feb. 24, 1925, at Lawrence. She died Nov. 18, 1982. A son, Dale Barney, died in 1969.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Barney Harkness, Silver Lake; a son, the Rev. Kenneth D. Barney Sr., Springfield, Mo.; a brother, J. Earl Barney, Topeka; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Silver Lake United Methodist Church. Military graveside services will be conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Barney will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to Silver Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 188, Silver Lake, 66539.
