James H. Heslet

Word has been received in Topeka, of the death of James Hancock Heslet, 85, early-day Topeka and Rossville printer, in Silver Lake Spring, Md., Sunday. Services were held in Washington, D.C. Wednesday.

Mr. Heslet the last surviving brother of John Heslet, Jake, Joe, and Charles Heslet and Mrs. Delia Heslet Swearingen and Mrs. Mina Wax, now deceased, but early day residents of Rossville. The old home place is now owned by the Reporter editor.

He roomed with former Senator Arthur Capper when both were printers on the Topeka Capital in the late 80s. He also served as freeman on the Capital for a time.

He married Miss Bertha L. Knowles of Philadelphia in 1894, and a year later they moved to Washington where he became a compositor in the government printing office. When he retired after 36 years, he was chief of the brach government printing office in the Library of Congress.

Mr. Heslet was born in Zionsville, Ind., October 5, 1865, and three years later the family came to Shawnee county locating at Rossville.

Survivors are his wife: two daughters, Mrs. E. Paul Smith of Bourbon, Ind., and Miss Mary R. Heslet of Washington; a sister, Mrs. Josephine McElvain of Denver, and a number of nieces and nephews, including Bert Heslet, Guy Startup, Della Startup and Walter Startup of Rossville.
