David E. Karnowski
David Edwin Karnowski, 76, Emmett, died Wednesday, January 29,1997, at a Topeka hospital. He had pneumonia.

He was born November 11, 1920, at Vinita, OK, the son of Peter and Maybelle Weis Karnowski.

He had lived in the Emmett area for the past 50 years, where he was a farmer and cattleman.

He grew up in the Paxico community, was graduated from Paxico High School, and attended Kansas State University on a track scholarship majoring in agriculture. He worked for the Boeing Company in Wichita as a foreman from 1941 until 1944, and served in the Army Air Corps 4132nd Unit in World War II. He later taught agriculture to returning veterans in the St. Marys community. He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Emmett, and was formerly a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the USD 321 Board of Education for eight years. In his retirement years, he was an active performer at the Kaw Valley Chapter of the Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers organization.

He was married to Louise Frances Blanchat on July 25,1946, at Emerald. She survives. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year. He was preceded in death by a twin sister, Lucy Karnowski, at the age of six, another sister, Nora Mitchell, and a brother, Steve Karnowski.

Other survivors include eight daughters, Marie Stutterheim, Weston, MO, Lucy Berringer, Terrell, TX, Jan Eichman, Wamego, Marilyn Immenschuh, St. Marys, Marcia Stevenson, Hartford, Carolyn Bertels, Troy, Vikki Boatwright, Meriden, Jean Miller, Kansas City, MO; six sons, David Karnowski, Bill Karnowski and Philip Karnowski, all of Wamego, Mike Karnowski, Baker, OR, Leon Karnowski, Topeka, Richard Karnowski, Emmett, Andrew Karnowski, Overland Park, James B. Karnowski, Texarkana, AR, Charles J. Karnowski, Kansas City, KS; two sisters, Mary Dinkel, Topeka, and Virginia Billings, Bonner Springs; 39 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His service was Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, St. Marys. A rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Emmett, and sent in care of Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys.
