Obituary- Heslet, Mary Ann

Grandma Heslet Dead
"Grandma" Heselet [sic Heslet] who had been suffering for some time from the disability of old age passed away on October 7th. She was an old settler in this community, having come to Rossville with her husband and family in 1868. Her husband died here in 1873. The funeral services was conducted by Rev. J.H. Lamb and Rev. Calvin Holman at the Christian church on Saturday afternoon at 2:30. A large and sympathetic gathering was present to pay the last tribute to their departed friend. The following is the obituary notice read at the church.

Mary Ann Smith was born in Miami, Miami county, Ohio, June 7th, 1830. At the age of ten years she came with her parents to Indiana. She was married to Jacob Heslet, October 29, 1852, at Rushville, Indiana, and after 21 years of married life Mr. Heslet died. His death left a large family to be cared for and trained, but Mrs. Heslet did not shirk her duty, she proved herself a careful and loving mother. At the age of 80 years and 4 months she departed this life, leaving to mourn her death nine children, 26 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren, besides many friends.

In her early life she gave her heart to Jesus and united with the United Brethren church, after her marriage she joined the Regular Baptist church--the church to which her husband belonged. The last few years of her life she spent as a member of the Christian church at Rossville. She was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery.
