Obituary- Mann, Josephine 2

Mrs. Josephine Mann died Oct. 5. Though she was born near Delia on Sept. 14, 1910, she spent all her life close to Hoyt and was a very active member of that Jackson County community. Her family remembers her with this tribute:

When the shadows of eternity close around the life of a beloved member of one’s family there is a natural desire to say a last… and long… and lingering farewell.

Jo was the oldest of six brothers and sisters, with a dynamic and talented mother, Katie Flynn Argo, from County Tipperary, Ireland, who claimed to be the best pitch player in Jackson County and a father, Harry Argo, with a name which is ancient, and honored, and history related in Greece.

Our family moved to a farm about six miles northeast of Hoyt in 1920. Jo completed elementary school at Point Pleasant. Our father bought a pony, named Billy, for a trivial sum at a country auction. After he had ownership he was asked if he knew that horse was afraid of cars and shied at anything and everything. Dad understood then why there had been no competition in the bidding.

But Billy carried Jo safely back and forth to Hoyt High School for four years. Her high school years were extremely happy. She was a good student who enjoyed the stimulus of study and classwork. She was active in sports, particularly basketball, and she participated in most of the extracurricular activities of the school.

After graduating she realized a dream she had held from early childhood, to be a teacher. She taught Rock School east of Hoyt for two years, and then our home school, Point Pleasant.

It was after high school graduation and during her early year of teaching that the romance between Jo and Glenn began. It culminated in a love affair lasting over half a century.

Jo had an abundance of energy and ambition and drive; any project or task she undertook was carried through to completion with dedication.

She had a special talent for friendship; she valued her friends highly and gave them total loyalty.

Her brothers and sisters regarded her as a pillar of special strength. In her words and actions there were always healing overtones. Each of us has his or her private and cherished memories.

But her heart and soul were centered in her family, with Glenn, and Dale, her much-loved daughter-in-law, Sandy, and her two grandsons, Steven and Paul. Her family was her core.

A prayer is offered for her new adventure into eternity:

Eternal Father, we thank you for sending this inspirational life to share our days. Jo will be sorely missed. In your goodness and mercy we ask that you embrace her, your child now, and welcome her into your heavenly kingdom.

We are sending you, our very best.

Mrs. Mann will be missed by many whose lives she touched. She was valedictorian of her Hoyt High School class of 1928. She was an active member of United Methodist Church of Hoyt and the various church organizations. She was a member and past worthy matron of Hoyt Chapter No. 189 of Order of Eastern Star. She had been an active 4-H header for many years.

After her retirement in 1975 from Kansas Department of Revenue at Topeka, she became more involved in many areas of the community. She was a census enumerator for this area, the chairman of the election committee of Douglas Township and secretary for the Hoy Cemetery.

She was married to Glenn Mann on May 3, 1932 at Topeka. He survives.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sandra Mann of Colorado Springs, and two grandsons, Steven and Paul. She is survived also by two sisters, Mrs. Irene Ross of Palm Desert, Calif.; and Mrs. Bernadine Maxwell, Whiting and two brothers, Bernard Argo, Kansas City, Kan., and Bob Argo, Topeka.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct 8, at the Hoyt United Methodist Church with Rev. Barbara Grosenbacher officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carolyn Rose and a song offered by Mrs. Beth Fenske.

Active pallbearers were Dean Tuck, John Bostwick, Howard Feischer, Mark Joy, Charles Bostwick and William Donahue with Harry Oldweiler as honorary pallbearer.

Flower ladies were Clyda Bostwick, Alberta Tuck, Lucille Harris, Marjorie Bostwick and Bonnie Williams. Memorials were made to Hoy United Methodist Church. We will miss this very dynamic wife, mother, sister and friend.
