Obituary- Kerwin, Winifred 2

Winifred L. Kerwin
Winifred L. Kerwin, 92, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1,2011, at Rossville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1918, at St. Marys, the daughter of George A. and Gertrude Heston Yocum. Mrs. Kerwin graduated from St. Marys High School.

Winifred had worked for the Supply Depot in Topeka, then at the Delia Grocery Store and later drove a bus for USD 321 for 20 years. She was a member of Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Winnie’s passion was cooking.

On Aug. 31,1935, she was united in marriage to Edward B. Besta; he died Dec. 23,1954. She later was married to Clinton Kerwin on Oct. 17, 1956. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Kerwin was preceded in death by her par¬ents and her siblings, Catherine Palmer, Georgia Mae Forbes, Helen Goodin, George Yocum and Betty Lou Hatfield. She was also preceded in death by a son, George E. “Eddie” Besta and a daughter, Theresa Marney.

Survivors include two sons, Bennie Besta of Rossville and Bob Kerwin and wife Susan of Ozawkie; two daughters, Mary Cowan and husband Ron of Topeka, and Terri Kerwin of Rossville; a son-in-law, Robert Marney of Holton; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Besta of Topeka; three sisters, Margaret “Muggs” Petty of Olathe, Alice Hoffset of Wamego and Patty Shove of St. Marys; a brother, Clarence “Nick” Yocum of St. Marys; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 6 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment was in the Rossville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or the Rossville City Park Improvement Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, KS 66536.
