He was the eldest son of Oscar and Rosella McConnell. When but a child his parents moved into the States locating in Jackson county, Missouri, and later coming on to Shawnee county, Kansas, where they established a permanent home.
He was married in 1871 to Sarah Frances Karr, and to this union were born five children, three of whom have preceded him—Jacob, Lina and Edward. The widow and two daughters, Mrs. Lena Robinson and Mrs. Mattie Stover of the immediate family survive. There are also two brothers, four sisters, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He retired from active business about fifteen years ago but still retained his residence on the farm which has been the family home for forty-five years. Of a cheerful, happy disposition he had many friends among the young and the old. His home has ever been open to the friend or neighbor who needed a helping hand and it may truly be said of him “He loved his fellowman.”
