Obituary- McKenzie, Oscar
Oscar J. McKenzie
WILLARD — Oscar J. McKenzie, 87, Willard, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, at a Topeka nursing home.
Mr. McKenzie worked 25 years at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. before he retired in 1972. He had served many years as mayor of Willard and several terms on the Willard City Council.
He was born March 22, 1909, in White Oak, Ky., the son of Henry and Minniebelle Gose McKenzie. He moved to Kansas in 1935 and he had lived in Willard since 1951.
Mr. McKenzie was a member of Lake Lodge No. 50 AF&AM in Silver Lake, Hesperian Lodge No. 111 in Rossville where he served nine years as worshipful master and one term as District Deputy Grand Master. He was awarded Outstanding Mason for 1981 by the M.W. Grand Lodge AF&AM of Kansas. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite and Arab Shrine in Topeka and a 25-year member of Clarice Chapter No. 390 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Wakarusa.
He was married to Vesta Keeton on Nov. 15, 1933, in Sandy Hook, Ky. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Ray McKenzie, Tallahassee, Fla., Clyde McKenzie, Marietta, Ga., and Neil McKenzie, Willard; three sisters, Ethel Kissick, Paris, Ky., Myrtle McKenzie, Mansfield, Ohio, and Mattie Perry, West Liberty, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Chapel in Topeka. Burial with Masonic graveside services conducted by Lake Lodge No. 50 AF&AM will be at Valencia Cemetery in Valencia. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where relatives and friends will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1314 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, 66604.
