Obituary- McQueen, Harold 2

HAROLD LEE MCQUEEN
Harold Lee McQueen, 81, of Delia, passed away Monday, March 2,2009, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, after a short illness.

Harold was born Aug. 22, 1927, northeast of Holton, to Knox Ralph McQueen and Lillie Ethel Wolfe McQueen. He attended school at Pleasant Grove and Prairie View Grade Schools and graduated from Soldier High School in 1945. He lived his entire life in Jackson County; the last 47 years in Delia.

He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the United States Army as an Honor Guard in General Headquarters at Tokyo, Japan.

Harold was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 24 years, carrying mail in the Delia community five years and in the Hoyt community for 18. In addition, he farmed and ranched, receiving the Kansas Bankers Association Soil Conservation Award and the Grassland Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Management.

Mr. McQueen was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church serving on the session numerous times. Harold was a 59-year member of the Kansas Masonic Lodge, Delia No. 419. He was secretary for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31, Rossville.

Over the years he served several times as councilman or mayor of Delia.

He was a member of the Delia School Board. He was also a school board member of USD No. 321, where he served as treasurer.

He was a past member of the Delia Lions Club. He coached little league baseball and was a Boy Scout leader.

He married Eudora June Eakin on Oct. 18, 1952, at the Circleville Christian Church. She survives at the home.

Interment will be at Delia Cemetery. Military graveside service will be conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Delia Presbyterian Church and may be left or sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, KS 66536. Online condolences may be made at www.piperfuneralhome.com.

Other survivors include two sons, Lee (Patty) McQueen of Kearney, Neb.; Glen McQueen of Delia; a daughter, Denise Robbins of Canton, Mich.; grandchildren Megan McQueen of Little Rock, Ark., Kurt McQueen of Conway, Ark., and Gwen McKay of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Betty Chilia of Ogden, Utah; one brother-in-law, Dean Stauffer of Holton; one sister-in-law, Ivaleu Miller of Delia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Stauffer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 5, at the Delia Presbyterian Church, Delia, with the Reverend Douglas Phenix officiating.
