MRS. WINIFRED VERA
MCCLAIN MINNIS
Mrs. Winifred Vera McClain Minnis, 93, died at her home in Rossville, Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

She was born Jan. 16,1919, at St. Marys, the daughter of Clarence S. and Florentine Stockman Emert. The Emert family lived in the St. Marys area until 1932 when they moved to Rossville.

Winifred received her Bachelor of Science Degree and teaching certification from St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth and her business degree from Washburn University. She taught one year at Lillis High School and six years as a commerce teacher for the high school at St. Marys.

She was married to Thornton McClain. Aug. 21,1947, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Rossville. She and her husband farmed until retiring in 1980. Thornton died Aug. 21, 1987.

She was active in her church and was a member of the Altar Society for many years. She joined the Rossville Literary and Music Club in 1947. Winifred belonged to the Ladies of the Moose in Topeka. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and restoring rental property.

On April 1, 1989, Winifred married Russell Minnis. They were married eight years until Russell’s death on May 9, 1997.

Winifred is survived by her children; a daughter Vickie Sue McClain, Overland Park; a son, Larry M. McClain, Rossville; her sister Mrs. Joan Siegert Warton, Garland, Texas.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, March 9, at Piper Funeral Home, St. Marys, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to service time.

Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery, Rossville.
