Mrs. Mary Lasswell
Mrs. Mary Durham Lasswell, 81, 614 College, died Friday in a Topeka nursing home. She had been ill several months.
She formerly was on the staff of Lowman Memorial Methodist Church where she served as the parish visitor several years.
She was born Oct. 25, 1890, at Mayfield in Sumner County, the daughter of the Rev. George W. and Linnie Durham, and spent her early life in central Kansas. She taught two years in Butler County schools and later was a piano instructor 42 years. She lived in Burns, Fowler, Dodge City, Wellington, and Wichita before she moved to Washington, D.C. in 1944.
While in the East, she served two years as a private tutor to the children of Harold L. Ickes at Olney, Md. She returned to Kansas in 1946. She lived in the Delia community about six years before she moved to Topeka in August, 1952.
She was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service at the church. She also was a member of Beulah Chapter No. 34, Order of Eastern Star.
She was married to Earl A. Barker4 of Burns Dec. 28, 1910, at Ness City..The marriage ended in divorce in 1943. She was married to Otis Lasswell Sr., of Delia July 25, 194, at Wichita. He died April 27, 1952.
Survivors include two daughters. Mrs. Rosemary Deever, 5439 W. 12th Ter., and Mrs. Elaine Patterson, Wichita; a brother, the Rev. D. Paul Durham, Royal Oak, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle McClintic, Largo, Fla.; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. The casket will remain closed. Memorial contributions may be made to Lowman United Methodist Church.
