Obituary- Lawrence, Jeremiah

J.V. Lawrence

The body of Jeremiah V. Lawrence widely known farmer, living four miles northeast of Rossville, was found lying in the road two miles east of his home shortly after 9 o'clock last Friday. His farm team hitched to a lumber wagon, was standing patiently where they had stopped when he either fell from the seat of his wagon or started to climb down to the road. Death apparently was due to heart disease, according to Dr. H.L. Clark coroner, who was called when the body was found by Jim Spears as he drove along the road and found the team standing almost beside the body of the dead driver.

Mr. Lawrence had helped load a large chicken coop on his wagon at a farm half mile west of the place where death occurred. He was hauling the chicken coop to his daughter's farm near Silver Lake. Apparently he had a heart attack and fell from the wagon.

Mr. Lawrence was born near Hartzville, Indiana, Sept. 7, 1854. At the date of his death he was 79 years and 29 days old. He was brought to Kansas by his parents and grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Joseph K. Lawrence, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Epperson, in the spring of 1855. The family settled near Big Springs helping to form the First United Brethren church in the state. His father died when he was 12 years old leaving "Jerry" to help his mother raise the younger children.

He united with the church in his young manhood, continuing until his death.

On Sept. 1, 1881, he was married to Maud L. Lewis at Topeka, who preceded him in death thirty-six years ago. To this union three children were born: Mrs. Ellen Thomas of Topeka, Ks.; H.O. Lawrence of Topeka, and Mrs. Pearl Meek of Holton. He was married to Miss Anna Gibeson of Holton On Dec. 21, 1899. Three children were born to this union: Mrs. Esther Wolf of Silver Lake, Roscoe of the home address and Miss Lois Lawrence of Topeka.

Besides the six children mentioned, Mr. Lawrence is survived by three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Maggie Stone of Arkansas, Mrs. Jennie Bardwell of Wichita, Cora Jones of Ozawkie and Joe Lawrence of Washington; seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also leaves a host of friends to mourn his departure.

Funeral services were held from the Rossville Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. Horton assisted by Rev. Kregg of Topeka and J.B. Carr of Manhattan. Music was furnished by Miss Sanders, Mrs. Ruth Hess, Lorene Parr and Miss Kathleen Godfrey. Miss Lucille Griswold piano. Burial was in the Lecompton cemetery.
