Obituary- Murphy, John

FR. JOHN C. MURPHY, S.J.
Fr. John C. Murphy, S.J., 75, a retired Jesuit missionary and native St. Louisan, died Friday, January 17, 1986, at University Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. after a long illness.

He was born July 13, 1910, in St. Louis and attended Cathedral and St. Roch parish schools. He entered the Jesuit order after graduating from St. Louis University High School in 1928. He received degrees in Latin and philosophy from St. Louis University. He studied theology at St. Mary’s College, St. Marys, Ks., where he was ordained June 18, 1941, then attended St. Louis School of Divinity.

Fr. Murphy taught mathematics and science at Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chein, Wise., then became a missionary to Central America, serving briefly in Belize, then for 21 years in Honduras.

Returning to the United States in 1968, he served as a parish priest in Pueblo, Colo., St. Marys Immaculate Conception and Rossville St. Stanislaus parishes, and was resident pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Paxico, from late 1971 to 1980, where he celebrated his Golden Jubilee. From late 1980 to 1983, he served as associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church in Kansas City, Mo.

In October, 1983, Fr. Murphy moved to Fusz Pavilion, a Jesuit nursing facility on the St. Louis University campus, due to his declining health. He ministered to many of the ill and often visited the nursing homes in the area.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Fusz Pavilion Tuesday evening, January 21, at 7:30 by Provincial Fr. Bob Costollo, S.J. Fr. Gene Martens, S.J., the manager of Fusz Pavilion, gave the main homily. There were many accounts of Fr. Murphy’s experiences at the missions he served and his great love for sports and fishing.
