Obituary- Lewis, Richard Garfield

R. G. "DICK" Lewis
Richard Garfield Lewis was born June 6, 1881, at Bala, Kansas. He died Friday night at his home in Willard at the age of 73. lie was the son of the late Robert and Ann Lewis, early Welsh settlers in Riley County.

At the age of 11 he joined the Welsh Calvinestic Church at Bala, which was later merged with the Presbyterian Church there. He was also a member of the Operators and Telegraphers Union and had been a member of the Sabetha Masonic Lodge for 50 years. Dick began working for the Rock Island Railroad at the age of 14 and retired in 1952 at the age of 71 years.

It has been said our good deeds live on after us. In that case, “Dick” will be mourned by many who were helped by him. He was generous and open handed when a friend was in trouble, and numerous occasions are recalled of his helpfulness to his home town families and others in the' Willard community.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Lewis, of the home, two sons, Gene of Topeka and David of the Navy in South Carolina; two brothers, Jack Lewis of Rossville, and William Lewis of Topeka; one sister, Mrs. Emily Jackson of Willard and four grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister have preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at Parkers Mortuary on Tuesday, September 28, with burial in the Rossville Cemetery.

Graveside services here were in charge of Hesperian Lodge A. F. & A. M. of Rossville.
