Obituary- Oldfield, Samuel 1

Samuel Oldfield At Rest
Samuel Oldfield, one of Rossville township's pioneer settlers passed away Friday evening December 26, at 6:30 after an illness of several weeks. The end, while in no wise unexpected was a shock to many of his old friends and neighbors. Mr. Oldfield has been in poor health for many months and gradually grew weaker. He has suffered from heart trouble for many years and his death was due to heart disease. He has been a resident of Rossville township since 1879 when he came from Moline, Illinois. He has been one of the hardest working men in the county and by thrift and varied investments had layed up quite a competence for himself and family. Sammy, as he was best known to his old acquaintances and neighbors, was well liked. Being a native of England he possessed many of the virtues and qualities of that sturdy people that made him a good citizen.

Mr. Oldfield was 72 years, 7 months and 12 days old at the time of his death. He was born May 14, 1841, in Stonymiddleton, Berbyshire [sic Derbyshire], England. He came to America in 1871 and located at Moline, Ill. After living there for eight years he came to Kansas and purchased the old home place now occupied by his son Tom. As he prospered he acquired more land until a few years ago he owned a quarter section on the north and south of his home place and one west of the home place. These he parceled out to his five children giving each boy a quarter section and his two daughters 120 acres each.

The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Alexander and interment made in the Rossville cemetery. The A.O.U.W. and M.W.A. lodges, both of which he was a member, attended the funeral in a body.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his aged widow, three sons, William, Jack and Tom and two daughters Mrs. Robert Cottle and Mrs. Launda Cottle, all of whom reside in this vicinity. One brother, the only surviving member of his own family, who lives in Illinois, was unable to attend the funeral being himself very ill and in a critical condition.
