Max E. Lemon Sr.
Max E. Lemon, Sr., Topeka, died Monday, June 21,2004, at his home. He was born March 11, 1924, the son of James H. “Harry” and Ulvesta Cusic Lemon on a farm near Maple Hill. Max was one of 14 children. He was raised in Maple Hill area. He attended Maple Hill Grade School and Maple Hill High School. He worked at the grain elevator in Maple Hill while going to high school. After graduation, Max worked at the John Morrell Packing Plant in Topeka. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was discharged in 1946, following World War II. Max was a pilot in the service. Mr. Lemon had worked at Jersey Ice Cream Co., Capital Electric, R.B. Steveson, and Dechand Roofing and Supply Co. before he went into business for himself. He owned and operated Lemon Heating and Air Conditioning in Topeka for more than 50 years. Mr. Lemon was baptized the catholic church at St. Rose of Lima Church in Santa Rosa N.M. He joined Holy Name Church in 1946. He was confirmed at St. Joseph Church in 1965. Max had been a member of the Knight's Of Columbus. He was a volunteer at Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center and also at Topeka State Hospital. He was a webelo's leader and assistant Boy Scout leader in the Boy Scouts of America in 1983. He married his wife, LaWanda Mildfeldt, on Jan. 4, 1974, in Topeka. LaWanda survives at their home. Other survivors include a son, Max E. Lemon Jr., Maple Hill; a daughter, Margarette Lemon, Topeka; a brother, Buss Lemon, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Larina Moses, Topeka; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Old Stone Church at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Maple Hill, Kan. Military honors and interment will follow in the cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., following the rosary. Contributions may be made to the Max Lemon Memorial Fund and sent in care of Capital City Bank.
