Rhoda Page Dies of Cancer
Services for Mrs. Rhoda Page, 68, of Grove, were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rossville Methodist Church with burial in Rossville Cemetery. She passed away Thursday, July 15, at Topeka’s St. Francis Hospital. She had been hospitalized since June 23.
She was born November 5, 1896 at Oskaloosa, Kansas, the youngest of the thirteen children of Chris and Elnora Hofmann. Orphaned at six she was raised by her sister, Mary C. Bliss. After graduation from Oskaloosa High School she taught in rural Jefferson County schools until May 24, 1919 when she married Eston Page at the home of Rev. Nelson in Topeka. And has lived in Grove Township ever since.
She joined the Oskaloosa Methodist Church at the age of 15, transferred to the Grove Walnut Hill Methodist Church, and then to Rossville Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Grove HDU.
Her husband, Eston Page, preceded her in death on March 12, 1955.
She is survived by three children, William Page of the home, Mary Ellen Clay of Onaga, Kansas, and Esther Knowlton of LaMont, Mo.; five grandchildren, her sister-in-law’s orphaned children whom she raised, Harold Fawl of Mr. Carmel, Ill. and Elwys Fawl Imler of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Otis Hofmann of Wadsworth, Kansas; and a sister, Meta Austin of Kansas City, Mo.
Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka was in charge of arrangements as Lawrence Gabel originated from her home town. The Rev. Allan Uthoff officiated at the service. Mrs. Irene Campbell played the organ and Mrs. Mary Jane Berkey sang. Pallbearers were Harrison Shenk, Eugene McRoberts, Edward Smatla, Herbert Kalcik, Gordon McLin and Elmer Crawshaw.
