Christina Bowers
DELIA—Christina L. Bowers, 87, Delia, died Tuesday, March 13,2001, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Bowers taught school until 1998. She began her career in Neive School and then was a substitute teacher at The High Prairie School.
She taught a first grade class at Colorado Grade School in Holton for 13 years and then did sub¬stitute teaching for Unified School District 321 from 1984 until she retired in 1998.
She was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Delia, the daughter of Nels and Alta Keller Thompson. She was raised in Delia and graduated from Delia High School. She graduated with her son from Washburn University in 1968 and earned a mas¬ter’s degree in education at Washburn in 1978. She lived most of her life in Delia.
Mrs. Bowers was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia, Delia Quilters and Delia Card Club. She was a former 4-H leader and member of the Jackson County Home Demon¬stration Unit. She also was a member of The Retired Teachers Association.
She married Lawrence A. Bowers on May 2, 1938, in Topeka. He died Nov. 8, 1983. Mrs. Bowers also was preceded in death by an infant son, James F. Bowers.
Survivors include three daughters, Christina Brennan-Rezac and Katherine Diane Budden, both of St. Marys, and Ruth Anne Walker,
Auburn; two sons, Lawrence A. Bowers Jr., Delia, and John E. Bowers, Joliet, Ill.; a sister, Emma Bowers, Silver Lake; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Fri¬day at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. Burial will be at Adrian Cemetery northwest of Delia. Mrs. Bowers will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A rosary recited at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by a prayer service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and sent in care of the funeral home.
