Obituary- Reid, John W. 1

John W. Reid
John W. Reid, a resident of Rossville community for sixty-seven years passed away at his home April 6.

He was the son of Alexander and Catherine Abbott Reid, of near Kingston, Canada, and was born there April 11, 1854, one of nine children. At the age of 14 he came with his parents to Hampshire, Ill., and settled on a farm near there. One of his nephews still lives on the original home. In 1876 he came west to Kansas, living in Greenwood County for a time and coming to Rossville a year later. In 1880 he was married to Miss Amanda James of Rossville, who preceded him in death in 1936. To this union four children were born, a son Edward, who died in infancy; two daughters and one other son.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church for nearly 50 years and was an elder for more than 30. He was a director of the Peoples State Bank of Rossville until failing health prevented his activity.

Those surviving are Mrs. T. Clyde Bacon, Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. W. H. Kerr, Rossville, and Homer S. Reid, Rossville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, James F. Reid, Hampshire, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Corson, Rockford, Ill., Mrs. Ed Dettmer and Mrs. Ralph Rich, both of South Dakota.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 9, at 2:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. N. P. Olney. Music was furnished by Mrs. William Hesse and Mrs. Leo Berry with Miss Frances Eversole accompanying.

Pallbearers were Messrs. Joe Barney, William Hesse, Fred McCollough, C. E. Gresser, Von Bloom and Ed James. Interment was in Rossville Cemetery.

Out-of-town relatives and friends here for the John Reid funeral were: Mrs. E. C. Kassebaum, Miss Beatrice Kassebaum, Mrs. Mary James, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cless and Beverly, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Stevens, Miss Joann Reaser, Mrs. James Crater, Mrs. Una Jamieson, Mr. Harry Logan, Dr. and Mrs. E. H. Gibson, Dr. Clinton Stalker, Mrs. Margaret Witter, all of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Lew Pressgrove, Tecumseh; Clyde Cless, Hutchinson, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Whitehead, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Thomas, Silver Lake; Ivan Morehead, Miss Mae Morehead, Eskridge.

DEATHS and FUNERALS
John W. Reid, who would have been 90 years old next Tuesday, passed away this Thursday morning at his home, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Presbyterian church.
