Donald E. Beseau
ST. MARYS ---Donald E. “Don” Beseau, 76, St. Marys, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at his home.
He was born March 15, 1928, in St. Marys, the sons of Harry Wilfred and Mary Frances Smith Beseau. He had lived his entire life in the St. Marys community. He graduated from St. Marys High School.
He served in the Air Force Reserves and the Kansas Army National Guard. He was called to active duty in 1968. In 1969, he went to Vietnam and served in the American Division 69th Brigade. He retired as chief warrant officer 4. He had worked for Blue Ribbon Cleaners in St. Marys for several years. He served as chief of police in St. Marys for many years and was a member of the M Squad. He worked for Raine Lumber and Hardware in Maple Hill for many years and later for Wehner Hardware in Rossville until he retired.
He was a member of St. Marys United Methodist Church. He was a past member of Pottawatomie Masonic Lodge in St. Marys. He was a member of Aubert-Walls Post No. 7796 at St. Marys and a member of the Retired Army Officers Association.
He married Betty J. Beverlin on Sept. 7, 1952, in Topeka.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jim Beseau, on Nov. 8, 1996; a great-granddaughter, McKayla; sisters, Twylah Lytle and Betty Raine; and a brother, Henry “Whistle” Beseau.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Beseau, of the home; two daughters, Sandra Wright, Houston, and Debbie Votaw, Topeka; a daughter-in-law, Susan Beseau, Daytona, Fla.; a sister, Janice Fryberger, St. Marys; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Marys United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery at St. Marys, where a funeral detail from Fort Riley will conduct military honors. He will lie in state after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Marys United Methodist Church or to Midland Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.
