Opal S. Rice
Opal S. Rice, 85, passed away Feb. 17,2012, in Topeka. She was born Feb. 5, 1927 near Colmesneil, Texas, the
daughter of Floyd E. and Elizabeth Gibbs Stem.

Opal had lived in Texas until moving to the Maple Hill community in 1969.

She had lived in Topeka since 2007. Mrs. Rice was a secretary for the Texas Farm Bureau and had worked at State
Office Systems in Topeka. She worked for her husband at Rice Accounting in Maple Hill.

She was married to Elbert B. Conner on June 19, 1947. They later divorced. She was married to Walter L. Rice Jr. on Aug. 2, 1969. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Stephen in 1989 and Terry in 2003.

Surviving are her children and their spouses, Judy and Stephen O’Neill of San Bernadino, Calif., Jerry and Jaye Connor of Topeka, Martha and Stephen Cook of Topeka, Nancy and Randall Pelfrey of Rossville; a stepdaughter, Trudy Filkins and husband Gary of Topeka; daughters-in-law, Margaret and Joyce Conner of Maple Hill; three sisters, Vera Watson of Fort Smith, Ark., Lena Hester, Phoenix, Ariz., and Linda Sheffield, Silsbee, Texas; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Maple Hill Community Congregational Church, Maple Hill. Interment followed in the Maple Hill cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of the funeral home.
