Obituary- Schumaker, Eugene

Eugene J. Schumaker
ST. MARYS — Eugene J. Schumaker, 65, St. Marys, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1993, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Schumaker was an electrical lineman. He had worked for Kansas Power and Light and Omaha Power and Light 20 years and in line construction for contractors. He also owned and operated the B & B Cafe in St. Marys from 1966 to 1968; the Gamble Store seven years and since 1991 worked in maintenance for St. Marys Housing Authority and delivered Meals on Wheels.

He served in the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific in World War II.

He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Clifton, the son of Lawrence and Cecelia Hesse Schumaker. He had lived in Topeka from 1948 to 1951, in Omaha, Neb., from 1951 to 1965, and since then in St. Marys.

Mr. Schumaker was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, the board of directors of St. Marys Senior Center, elected to St. Marys City Commission in 1991 and was serving as mayor. He also was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union No. 304, both in Topeka, and Rollers Travel Club in Rossville.

He was married to Mary L. Dyer on June 17, 1948, in Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include five sons, Donald E. Schumaker, Richard Schumaker and Patrick J. Schumaker, all of St. Marys, Ronald L. Schumaker, Topeka, and William L. Schumaker, Macksville; his mother, Cecelia Schumaker, St. Marys; four sisters, Lucille Connell, Leavenworth, Catherine Wilson, East Jordan, Mich., Mary C. Wehner, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Elizabeth Michaelis, St. Marys; five brothers, Lawrence Schumaker and James Schumaker, both of St. Marys, Lorain Schumaker, Topeka; Raymond Schumaker, Fullerton, Calif., and Robert Schumaker, Albuquerque, N.M.; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. Mr. Schumaker will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys, where memorial contributions may be made to St. Marys Senior Center or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
