Toddler Found In Greek In Critical Condition

A two-year-old boy was in crit¬ical condition at a Topeka hospi¬tal late Tuesday after he was found floating in Cross Creek, officials said.
Matthew Anspaugh was a pa¬tient at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, a nursing super¬visor said.
A Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department detective identified Matthew, 24 months, as the son of Ken and Paula Anspaugh, who live in a mobile home park at 422 Adrian in Rossville. The family’s home is about 50 yards east of Cross Creek, the detective said.
Rossville Marshal, Howard Bishop, said Matthew apparently had been playing outside with some other children "and just wandered away.”
The child's disappearance was reported by his mother about 4:45 p.m.-and a search was started immediately by her neigh-bors, the Rossville Fire Department and both members of the Rossville Police Department The boy was found by Rossville firefighters about five minutes later, floating face-down next to a log a few feet from the bank of Cross Creek, Bishop said.
The creek is higher than nor¬mal because of heavy rains Friday, April 26, he said.
The child had no pulse. Authorities didn't know how long he had been in the water.
The LifeStar helicopter ambu¬lance was called to the scene at 5:09 p.m. Bishop said Rossville firefighters restored the boy's pulse using cardiopulmonary re¬suscitation before he was flown to Stormont-Vail.
Matthew is in the pediatric in¬tensive care unit at the hospital and remains in critical condition.
