William L. Smith Sr.
ROSSVILLE — William L. Smith Sr., 76,
Rossville, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at a nursing home here. He formerly was mayor of Rossville 14 years and had served on the Rossville City Council.
He was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Topeka, the son of Walter and Martha Bearce Smith. He spent his early life in Topeka and was graduated from Topeka High School in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps. He delivered telegrams for Western Union and was a bus driver in Topeka several years.
He moved to Rossville in 1951. He was a production foreman at the Goodyear Plant in Topeka before he retired in 1979.
He was a member of the Christian Church, Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion and the Lions Club, all in Rossville. He was a former member of a Masonic Lodge in Topeka.
He was married to Alice Waldo May 2, 1942, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include four sons, William Smith Jr., Napanee, Ont., Walter Smith, Mayetta, Stuart Smith, Topeka, and Kenneth Smith, Emmett; two daughters, Jeanette Vogel and Mary Kelly, both in Topeka; a brother, Charles Smith, in California; three sisters, Geneva Durkin, Dover, Virginia Hamm, Wichita, .and Juanita McCall, Topeka; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Rossville. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Smith will lie in state from 7 to 9 p.m. today during visitation at the church in Rossville.
