Obituary- Somers, Mattie
Obituary
Mattie James was born March 12, 1892 and died at Sterling Kansas, May 21st, 1912, aged 21 years, 2 months and 9 days.
Mattie was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert James and was preceded to the great beyond by her older sister, Bessie, about ten years ago.
Mattie was born and reared in this community and by her amiable disposition and attractive ways had endeared herself to all who knew her. She was kind and gentle, studious and ever striving for the better things of life. She began her school work in the district school and later attended the Rossville schools. She later went to Campbell college, a t Holton, Kansas, and it was while a student there she met Mr. Chauncey Somers, and a mutual attachment resulted. They were married April 19, 1911 and went at once to a home provided by the young husband in Rice county.
On May 12th a baby son was born to the young parents and for a few days all seemed well until typhoid fever attacked the young mother. Everything that medical skill and loving hearts and trained service could do was done but to no avail and on May 21st, the end came.
Early in life Mattie was converted and to the last was happy in her religion. One of her last requests of her mother was to hear a passage from her beloved bible.
The funeral services were conducted by her pastor the Rev. Bacon, assisted by Revs. Bland and Wykert. A long procession of sorrowing relatives and neighbors followed to her grave to pay their last tribute of love and respect. A Friend
