Obituary- Sumner, Melvin
Melvin “Ted” Sumner
Melvin "Ted" Sumner, 87, Amarillo, TX, died Monday, December 24, 2001 in Amarillo, TX.
He was born September 15, 1914, in rural Delia, the son of Walter and Maude Murrow Sumner.
He was a self-taught mechanic and had been a tool-died designer for Boeing Aircraft building B-29 airplanes during World War II. He and his wife started a custom combining business in 1947 and, when he retired in 1987, the business had six combines, seven trucks, multiple grain trailers, and a work force of more than 12 3mployees.
On August 3, 1935, he married Virginia Houck in Colby. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Boston, Amarillo, TX; a son, Ted Sumner, Amarillo, TX; a sister, Ethel Lutz, Holton; five brothers, Raymond Sumner, Lakewood, Wa., Robert Sumner, St. Marys, Dale Sumner, Estes Park, CO., Don Sumner, Topeka, Bill Sumner, McAllen, TX; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were at 2 p.m., Thursday at Kingswood United Methodist Church in Amarillo, TX.
Memorial contributions may be made to BSA Hospice and sent in care of Olivia's Angels, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Schooler Funeral Home in Amarillo, TX was in charge of arrangements.
