Car accident kills couple,
3 others hurt
A Maple Hill couple was killed and three persons were hurt in a head-on collision on a county road north of Maple Hill Saturday night, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.
Leo G. Tholl, 51, and his wife, Lois Tholl, 46, who lived at Emmett many years before they moved to Maple Hill about four months ago, were killed in the crash.
The injured were identified as Nathaniel Ray Willingham, 46, and Dennis Bennett, 18, both of Rossville, and Lori Lundin, 17, Route 1, Silver Lake.
Willingham suffered a broken pelvis, a broken kneecap, and numerous cuts and was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday by officials at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Sunday. The two teenagers had minor injuries and were not admitted to the hospital.
Patrolmen said the 1971 Chevrolet Vega driven by Leo Tholl was southbound and the 1969 Pontiac sedan driven by Willingham was northbound When they collided on the Maple Hill road less than a half-mile north of the Kansas River bridge in Shawnee County.
Officers said the Pontiac was left of the center of the road as the driver had pulled out in an apparent attempt to pass a pickup truck.
Tholl and his wife, who were en route home after visiting relatives nearby, Were alone in their car.
Tholl was a weight officer for the State of Kansas and also worked as a security guard at the Jeffrey Energy Center north of St. Marys.
Leo G. Tholl was born May 16, 1926, at Emmett. Mrs. Tholl, the former Lois Joan Blair, was born March 20,1931, in Topeka. They were married May 5, 1949, in Topeka. They were members of the United Methodist Church at Emmett.
Their survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Linda J. Heslet, Rossville, Mrs. Roxey Fulmer, Belvue, and Tammie Tholl and Maxine Tholl, both at home; and two grandsons.
Mrs. Tholl also is survived by a step¬mother, Mrs. Beulah Blair, 143 Louise; a half-sister, Mrs. Norma Kilt, Maple Hill; and a half-brother, Melvin Blair, address unavailable.
Double services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka, Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery.
