John Bigham Uhl, 66, died Tuesday, April 18, 1989 of an apparent heart attack at Onaga.

He was born July 13, 1922, the son of George F. and Tressie E. Kratina Uhl, who preceded him in death.

John, a retired farmer, cattleman and floor covering man lived at Onaga.

Mr. Uhl grew up and went to school at Valencia and Silver Lake.

He then moved to Chicago, Ill., to work as a machinist, then later entered the Navy during World War II and served as a TM3 at Widbeg Island, Wash. After the Navy he moved to Bethel, Kan. and worked in Kansas City as a floor covering-man. Then John and his family moved to a farm in the Grantville area.

In January 1957 John and his family moved to Holton, where they raised two sons, bought a farm and operated Uhl's Lay-rite Floor Covering. John also did custom hay work, raised cattle and combining work.

John later lived in Kansas City, Mo., and Jackson, Mich. In 1985 he and his wife Barbara moved back from Michigan to live at Onaga. John moved back to help raise his grandsons and be around his sons.

He purchased a pasture at Havensville, operated a cattle operation and layed floor covering part-time. Mr. Uhl laid floor covering at both the old and new Mercer Funeral House.

Mr. Uhl was a member of the Methodist Church, Holton; Moose Lodge, Topeka.

John was formerly married to Anna Rose Uhl.

Survivors include his widow, Barbara Holmes Uhl; two sons, George R. and Daniel L., both of Holton; daughter-in-law, Janice K.; four grandsons, George E., John R., Michael D., Matthew R. Uhl; a brother, Gerald, Perry; two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Kendall and Mrs. Helen Mongold, both of Grantville.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 21, 1989 at the Mercer Funeral Home, Holton. The Reverend Duane Kessler officiated. Mrs. Ray Wright accompanied Clyde and Claude Rieschick as they sang "Ivory Palances" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Active casket bearers were Leo Bickford, Joe Henry, Jerry Reisinger, Dick DeVader, Alan McKinsey and Joe Collins. Honorary casketbearers were Rick Bickford, Mike Blake and Raymond Tannahill. Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery northwest of Topeka.
