George E. Verschelden
ST. MARYS — George E. Verschelden, 62, St. Marys, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1993, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Verschelden was a funeral director and embalmer. He had operated the Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys since 1952. The funeral home has been in the Verschelden family since 1894.
He was born Jan. 20, 1931, at St. Marys, the son of George E. and Catherine Johnston Verschelden, and lived all his life in St. Marys. He was graduated from St. Marys High School and from Kansas City College of Mortuary Science in Kansas City. Kan.
Mr. Verschelden was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, St. Marys Housing Authority, the Board of Directors of St. Marys Senior Center and served on the Parish Council of the church. He also
was a member of Kansas Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and Sunflowers Striders in Topeka where he
was an avid runner.
He was married to Peggy Mercier
Aug. 2, 1952, at Wymore, Neb. She survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Patricia Verschelden, St. Marys, Cia Verschelden, Manhattan, and Mary Pezza, Wichita; four sons, David Verschelden, Marysville, Matthew Verschelden, Fairway, Timothy Verschelden, Lees Summit, Mo., and Mark Verschelden, Shawnee; three sisters, Janet White, New Carlisle, Ohio, Katrina Clark, Topeka, and Maria Hutley, Dodge City; two brothers, Robert Verschelden, Manhattan, and Michael Verschelden, Garland, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. Mr. Verschelden will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at Verschelden Funeral Home where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Centennial Building Renovation or Pottawatomie-Wabaunsee Regional Library in care of the funeral home.
