Obituary- Viergever, Gerald 1

AUTO ACCIDENT FATAL
TO GERALD VIERGEVER
Returning to town after a brief hunting trip north of Rossville, Gerald Viergever, 14, received fatal injuries when he lost control of the car a new Kaiser, near the corner of the Rossville-Delia road by the Krasney farm. Others in the car were Jerry and Kenneth Mason and Gerald’s brother Dan. None of these were injured. 4 The accident occurred between 12 noon and 1 o’clock, Sunday. The boys were driving south and tire marks indicated the car headed for the left side of the road then swerving across the road into the deep ditch on the west side and turned over further along. Gerald was pinned under the car.

John Lillard, one of the first on the scene tried to lift the car off the boy, but he was not released until Mr. Krasney brought his tractor and lifted the wreck off the boy.

Gerald was taken to a Topeka hospital in Carter’s ambulance, but never regained consciousness and died Mon day.

Gerald Dean was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Viergever. He was born January 11, 1934, on the Viergever farm south of Willard. He attended the Willard grade school during his first and second grades. The family then moved to Havensville, where he attended school until he finished the fifth grade. In the spring of 1945 the family moved to Rossville, where he finished his elementary education.

Gerald was enrolled as a freshman in Rossville High school when his fatal accident occurred. This was a great shock to his parents, brother Dan, his sisters, Sue and Sharon Viergever, and to his relatives and dear friends.

When he came to Rossville he attended Sunday school at the Rossville Christian church and later as his friendship among the boys grew it carried him to the Methodist church. Gerald always carried that winning smile whether on the athletic field or in the class room. He greatly realized his responsibility among his playmates and respect for older people.
