Obituary- Wabaunsee, Llewellyn 1
Wabaunsee
Llewellyn “Lou” Wabaunsee, 85, Mayetta, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home.
He was born Jan. 15, 1924, on the Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta, the son of Louis Andrew and Catherine Ursula Shoptese Wabaunsee. He attended Grand Prairie school on the Prairie Band Reservation and high school in Marty, S.D., where he later enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Wabaunsee served in the Navy for nine years during World War II.k He later worked most of his life as a sheetrocker for Wabaunsee Drywall.
He was a lifelong resident of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and a member of American Legion We-Ta-Se Post 410.
He married Freda J. Nozhackum on Jan. 27, 1946 in Mayetta. She died July 7, 1986. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Richard Wabaunsee and Fred Lew Wabaunsee; two daughters, Louella “Henry” Wabaunsee and Marsha Ferrari; three sisters; a brother; three grandsons and a granddaughter.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary “Monnie” Wabaunsee and Frances Wabaunsee, both of Mayetta, Winifred “Goffy” Wahweotten, Dowagiac, Mich., Lois “Louie” Dominguez, Wichita; a son, Ralph Wabnum, Topeka; a sister, Anita Goslin, Rosalie, Neb.; a brother, Louis J. Wabaunsee, Topeka; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial was held Monday morning at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church. Burial was in Shipshee Cemetery.
