ROSSVILLE GIRL KILLED IN WRECK
ST. MARYS – A 17-year-old girl was killed early Sunday when the truck in which she was a passenger left the roadway and rolled several times east of St. Marys.
Kansas Highway Patrol identified her as Scherry Wehrli of Rossville.
The patrol said Miss Wehrli was a passenger in a truck driven by Kevin Wells, 17, St. Marys. Wells was not injured.
The accident happened at 12:01 a.m. Sunday on US-24 one mile east of St. Marys when Wells swerved to avoid hitting a deer which had jumped in front of his truck, the patrol said Wells told them. The vehicle left the roadway, travelled 256 feet before flipping at least twice, the patrol said. Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle.
Miss Wehrli was born April 29, 1963, at Hutchinson. She lived at Hutchinson until moving to Topeka in 1970. In 1972, she moved to Rossville.
She was a senior at Rossville High School.
She was a member of Rossville United Methodist Church, junior member of the Auxiliary of the Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, Rossville High School Band and Chorus and TASK, all at Rossville.
Survivors include her parents, Fred W. and Scherry Ann Brucker Wehrli, a brother, James Wehrli, and a sister, Kelly Wehrli, all of the home; grand patents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Brucker, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Linton, 3909 Mission Court, Topeka, and Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Wehrli, Holiday, Mo.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Rossville United Methodist Church with burial in Rossville Cemetery. Miss Wehrli will lie in state from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, and from 1 p.m. until services at the church. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Rossville High School, in care of Dr. Gene Davis, principal of the school.
