Obituary- Wells, James 2

James C. Wells
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the Christian Church in Holton for James Clayton Wells, 85, Holton. He died Wednesday, June 29, 1988, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Wells was a farmer and mechanic before he retired. He had followed the rodeo circuits as a bronco rider in his earlier years and performed in Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada, and in Madison Square Garden.

He was served as special deputy several years under Jackson County Sheriff Don Collins. He was in the Army during World War II, having served in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy.

He was born Aug. 11, 1902, at Circleville, the son of James C. and Lou Jeanne Owens Wells Sr. He spent most of' his life in Jackson County.

Mr. Wells was a member of Holton Memorial Post No. 1367 of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Mary L. Bair Post No. 44 of the American Legion, both at Holton.

He married Mary B. Slattery in 1938 at Hiawatha. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanice Wells, Mayetta; and two brothers, Nathan Wells and Les Wells, both of San Diego, Calif.

Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery at Hoyt. Mr. Wells will lie in state from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Holton where relatives and friends will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Contributions may be made to the James Wells Memorial Fund yet to be designated by relatives and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, 66436.
