Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. John R. Wilt, were held last Thursday August 20, at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary, in Topeka.
Martha M. Wilt died at the home Sunday, August 17, after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Miller, pioneer of Kansas. She was born April 28, 1872 and spent all her life in Shawnee Co.
John R. Wilt died in a Topeka hospital Aug. 19, at the age of 85. He had been ill at home for some time. Mr. Wilt was in a coma at the time of his wife’s passing and it is doubtful if in his earthly life, he was aware of his wife’s death.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilt were married August 26, 1890 residing in Rossville, where Mr. Wilt was a hardware merchant for many years. He retired from active business several years ago moving to Topeka where they spent their later years in their home at 1515 Polk street.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Wilt were active members of the First Presbyterian church, Topeka, where they transfer¬red their membership from the church at Rossville. They were also members of the Masonic and Eastern Star Orders.
Though they had no children they made a host of friends through their kindness and radiant personalities.
Mrs. Wilt leaves one sister, Mrs. A.T. Lucas, of Los Angeles.
Mr. Wilt leaves two sisters, Mrs. F.N. Binns and Mrs. Albert Reser; one brother, I.B. Wilt all of Rossville.
Also they leave the following nieces and nephews: Clarence McPherson, Mrs. Floyd Flanagan, Mrs. Gladys Hook of Topeka; Mrs. Harold Skaggs, Dodge City; Mrs. Helen Perkins, Dodge City; Earl Wilt, Kinsley, Kansas; Mrs. Mabel Bloom, Mrs. Arlene Reid, Roy Wilt of Rossville; L.R. Jamieson, of Kansas City; Mrs. Doris Adams, Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. Clara Flory, Howard, Kansas; Mrs. Charles Colvert, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Ruby Sawitzke, Henderson, North Carolina, and several great nieces and nephews.
The Reverend Paul Hall, a visiting minister from a Los Angeles, Presbyterian church, conducted the services.
The minister in closing said: The Wilts were not for pomp and ceremony. I think they would have liked me to read this simple poem: We do not want the pomp and show When we are laid away.
As it has come our time to go Let it be just another day.
A few firm friends, a simple word, The Scriptures read, a prayer said— A prayer offered to our Lord,
Who told us he had gone ahead.
For we shall go to be with Him. With no regret but only joy,
That though our sight on earth was dim
We’ll see more clearly there with Him C.J. McKee of Topeka sang, “The Lord’s Prayer,” by Mallott.
The pallbearers were, Messrs. Wil¬liam Kerr, Sidney Stumbaugh, Perry Stumbaugh, Harry Gutshall, J. B. Davis, Henry Davis, Shirley Parr, Martin Whearty, Floyd Cless, Dr. E. E. Welch, Mr. Moser and Mr. Butter¬field.
Interment was in Topeka cemetery.
