Union Hotel, Rossville, Kansas In 1871, on the comer of Pearl and Perry streets, A.C. Sherman constructed the first hotel in Rossville. M.V. Lee operated the hotel until June 1877 when he sold it to Mr. O. Woods, who sold it in 1878 to S.B. Maxwell, who then renovated the hotel. The hotel became known as the Maxwell House. A.W. Gabbey, son of Dr. Gabbey, purchased the hotel and renamed It The Rossville Hotel, operating it until Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vorhies took ownership of the Union Hotel in 1898. They continued running the business until it burned on February 14, 1901.
The following information about the parents of Albert Gabbey was obtained from the Kansas Historical Society.
Robert S. Gabbey was born May 4, 1833, his father died in 1838 and his mother in 1842. After his parent's deaths, Gabbey lived with an uncle in Cannonsburg (Michigan). On September 27, 1848, he studied under a private tutor and in September 1850 Gabbey entered Jefferson College to study medicine. Gabbey studied under several doctors in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and graduated in March 1855. He married Anne Welton on October 5, 1854. Gabbey started practicing medicine in Terre Haute, Indiana in April,
1855. Later he practiced medicine in several states including Illinois, Missouri, and Georgia. In 1857 Gabbey President Buchanan was appointed physician to the Pottawatomie Indians near Rossville, Kansas. After serving seven years with the Pottawatomie, he took his family to Montana via covered wagon, in search of gold. While in Montana he became a star route mail contractor and established the one of the first stage lines in the territory. Two years later, he returned to Kansas and purchased a farm east of Rossville. Gabbey was the first justice of the peace in Rossville township and served four terms. He was twice appointed postmaster. He was an inventor and patented several pieces of agricultural equipment and an airship. Robert S. Gabbey died January 25, 1900 and Anne Welton Gabbey died January 8, 1901.
