Obituary- Clark, Raymond

Delia Man Dies,
2 Hurt in Crash

Raymond Clark, 45, Delia, was killed about 12:30 a. m., today, April 7, 1966, when a car in which he was a passenger slammed into the Cross Creek Bridge, about 2 ½ miles north of Rossville on the Delia Road.

At Stormont-Vail in critical condition were the driver of the car. Bernard F. Mulanax, 23, Delia, and a passenger, James P. Huggins, 24, Delia.

Mulanax suffered a dislocated right hip, cuts on his face and nose internal injuries. He underwent surgery today, attendants said.

Huggins sustained a compound fracture of his lower right leg, a broken left upper arm and cuts on his face.

Sheriff’s Deputy Ed Pilarz said the Mulanax car, a 1968 Chevrolet, was southbound when it veered off the road and hit the right side of the Cross Creek Bridge. The car spun around, heading north, overturned, and hit the other side of the bridge.

The deputy said when he arrived at the wreck, Clark’s body was about half out of the car on its right side. He was dead, Pilarz said.

Mulanax was pinned in the front seat by the steering wheel and Huggins was in the back seat.

Pilarz and Sgt. Don Rayls broke a rear window and, aided by Ray Smalley of Cross Ambulance, removed Huggins.

The car was then righted and a door pried open to remove Mulanax.

Huggins told Deputy Ed Biggs he had gotten off work at the Topeka Goodyear plant at 11 p.m. and gone to Angelo’s Tavern at Delia. The three left the tavern, which was operated by Clark, and were en route to Bellvue “to get something to eat” when the accident occurred.

Blacktop paving was wet from rain when the accident occurred, Pilarz added.
