Obituary- Coen, Mary
MRS. MARY COEN
Mrs. Mary Coen, 87, died Monday night, October 20, 1947, at her home in Holton. She came to Kansas in 1866 from Indiana, and for the last 75 years had lived in Jackson County. Surviving are five children, Mrs. C. C. Coleman, Rossville; Mrs. Ethel Hersh, Topeka; Mrs. William Vestle, Holton; Mrs. Effie Wilderson, Chicago, and J. P. Coen, Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 2:30 p. m. in Holton at the McAsey Funeral Home, and burial was in the Holton Cemetery.
Mrs. Coe is a sister of Mrs. Rose Myers and Frank Page, both of this city, and grandmother, of Albert Coleman and Mrs. Ernest Decker.

Mary Page Coen, oldest daughter of James Henry and Amanda Custer Page, was born July 20, 1860, near Tippecanoe, Ind. She came to Kansas in a covered wagon with her parents and two older sisters settling in the neighborhood of Avoca, Kan., in the west part of Jackson county. She was a pioneer school teacher.
On March 30, 1880, she was united in marriage to Thomas Wilfred Coen by Rev. R. P. Hamm. To this union were born six children, five surviving. On December 17, 1899, her husband passed away, and for several years she did practical nursing.
She joined the Holton Christian Church in March, 1901. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary and made her home in Holton.
She is survived by five children: Ellen Coleman, Rossville; Myrtle Vestle, Holton; Ethel Hersh, Topeka; Effie Wilderson, Chicago; and John P. Coen, Kansas City, Mo., Dean Franklin having passed away May 7, 1941.
She is survived by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Alice Gideon, Newkirk, Okla.; Mrs. Rose Myers, Rossville; Mrs. Mae Simms, Newkirk, Okla.; Mrs. Cora Serrella, Denver; Bert Page, Greeley, Colo.; Frank Page , Rossville, Kan.; and Horton Page, Greeley, Colo.; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. At two different times in her lifetime she enjoyed five generations.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30 p. m. at the McAsey Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Troy Bess. Pall bearers were James Naylor, John Darlington, Emerson Osterhold, Percy Haag, Frank Karstetter, and Edward Starin.
