James K. Conley, who would have reached his 94th year March 10th, and a resident of this community for the past sixty-nine years, died at 8 o’clock Monday morning at his home at the south city limit of Rossville.
He was born at Penn Yon, N.Y. in 1846. On September 25, 1870, he was married to Lurana Howard of Shaftsbury, Vt. And they moved to Kansas the same year, locating permanently in Rossville township on the farm adjoining Rossville on the south.
The Rossville city park was purchased from Mr. Conley in 1922.
Until his advanced age made farm work too strenuous, Mr. Conley had spent his life in active work on his farm. For the past nine years the place has been under the direction of his grandson, James Conley. Mr. Conley’s eyesight failed him about three years ago, and since he had been under the care of a housekeeper.
A graveside funeral service was held this (Thursday) afternoon in Rossville cemetery, conducted by the Rev. C.P. Broadfoot.
The pall bearers were three grandsons, James L. Conley, Vernon S. Conley and William T. Conley; Howard Stiles, Clyde Rogers and Walter Moseley.
Surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. W.W. Harvey, Topeka; and Mrs. L.U. Morris, Oakland, Calif., one son, Schuyler Conley, Rossville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
