Obituary- Magill, Abram

Death of Dr. Magill
Dr. A. G. Magill, an old resident of Shawnee county, died suddenly at his residence near Silver Lake Sunday. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o’clock from the M. E. Church in Silver Lake.

Dr. Abram Grove Magill was born in St. Clare Ohio in 1833 not far from the Ohio river which his grandfather, Chas. Magill, had crossed with his family from Virginia in order that his children might not be reared where slavery was in Virginia. That Dr. Magill should end his earthly career in Kansas seems significant but fitting in view of the fact that although the son of a large slave owner, his father was willing to leave behind him all the advantages of old family connections in order that he might also leave slavery behind.

Abram was the youngest of thirteen children among who were represented creditably and sometimes prominently in several professions, including the clergy and various business pursuits.

Only one member survives, sister Kate, the widow of Jas. McFarland, of Cincinnati Ohio. Dr. Magill obtained his college and medical education in Ohio from which place he went to Wisconsin for a short time in order to take care of his next brother, Rev. Henry T. Magill, who was struggling against a fatal illness. He moved to Missouri after the death of his brother and at Tipton Mo., married Mrs. Margaret Kelley. They settled at Silver Lake Kansas 31 years ago where he continued the practice of medicine carried on a drug store and was interested in the Insurance business.

He has for many years been prominent in the work of the Methodist church and had a wide acquaintance among its members and clergy. In addition to the widow Dr. Magill leaves three daughters, Mrs. C. L. Dolman of Lawrence, Mrs. Levi Neiswender of Topeka and Mrs. J. C. Bradley of Rossville, a step son, J. S. Kelley of Silver Lake and eight grandchildren.
