Obituary- Rankin, William

Wm. Rankin, one of the pioneer residents of this city, died at his home on Orange street Tuesday evening, January 7th, after an illness of nine days, from pneumonia.

He was born in Philadelphia, Penn., April 6th, 1852 and at the time of his death was 55 years, 9 months and 1 day old. He came to Rossville from Illinois in 1879 and has lived the greater part of the time since in this vicinity. For many years he conducted the City Meat Market and gained a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who were immeasurably shocked to learn of his death.

The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, Thursday, conducted by Evangelist Adams, of the Christian church. It was one of the largest funerals ever held here, the church being packed to its doors with sympathizing friends and neighbors. The floral decorations were profuse and handsome. Mr. Rankin was a member in good standing of the A.O.U.W. and carried $2,000 life insurance. The lodge attended in a body and had charge of the service at the grave in the city cemetery.

Mr. Rankin was a member of the Christian church, joining that organization in the year 1885. He leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter to mourn his departure. Three daughters and one son had preceded him to the mysterious beyond.

Mr. Rankin was a good citizen, a genial companion and won the esteem of all with whom he had to do. In his death the family suffer the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father, and the community a worthy and valued member.
