Kansas Pioneer Gone
E.T. James, Who Died Recently, Had Been a Resident of Shawnee County 45 Years.

December 6, 1915, marked the passing of another pioneer of Shawnee county, when Edward Thomas James, a resident for nearly 45 years of Rossville township, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gus Kassebaum. Death was due to heart trouble.

Mr. James had reached the advanced age of 85 years, having been born in Talbot county, Maryland, August 27, 1830. He moved from Maryland to Indiana and during the wary served in the Ninth Indiana infantry.

In 1868, with several other families, he traveled overland from Brazil, Ind., to Topeka, Kan. Mr. James located at Tecumseh, where he resided several years before purchasing the farm west of Rossville, which he owned at the time of his death.

In the early seventies he served as county commissioner and from time to time held various county and township offices.

He was a highly respected citizen and the assembly of friends at the funeral services, which were held December 8 at the Presbyterian church, Rossville, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Crawford, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Nelson, of Topeka, attested the high esteem held for him by the entire community.

The casket bearers were the five sons and a nephew, Robert D. James. Interment was made in Rossville cemetery.

The surviving children are: Mrs. E.C. Kassebaum, Silver Lake, Kan.; Mrs. Gus Kassebaum, Mrs. J.W. Reid, John James of Topeka, Charles, Sherman, Harvey and Harry James of Rossville, Kansas. Also twent-four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
