| 5601 |  | Obituary- Foster, Luther 2 Luther Foster Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary for Luther Foster, 91, 2701 Wisconsin, who died Tuesday at a Topeka hospital. He was born March 23, 1888, in Holt County, Mo., the son of Andrew J. and Betty Willey Foster. Mr. Foster owned and operated produce stations at Paxico and Rossville until retiring in 1953. He was past master of Hesperian Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, Rossville, in 1947, and was a member of Rossville Christian Church. He was married to Ruth Thomas July 4, 1914, at Savannah, Mo. She died July 7, 1933. Survivors include two sons, Donald Foster, Little Rock, Ark., and Richard Foster, Paola; a daughter, Mrs. Arnold Christiason, 2701 Wisconsin; six grand-children; nine great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 22 stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery near Paxico. | |

She also had worked for Luce Clipping in Topeka and later for the Drug Store and then the Liquor Store at Rossville. She was born Sept. 18, 1912, at Topeka, the daughter of Charles Henry and Catherine Ellen Biringham Dale. She had lived at Rossville since 1959. Mrs. Foster was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Rossville and the altar society at the church. She was a former member of the Rossville and Sunnyside Home Demonstration Units. She also was past president of the Rossville Literary Club. She married Joseph Freeman Foster on Aug. 8, 1934, at Topeka. He died Nov. 23, 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Foster, Overbrook; four sons, Robert Foster, Topeka, David Foster, Rossville, and Charles Foster and Fred Foster, both of Delia; one brother, John Dale, Topeka; two sisters, Catherine Sommers and Char¬lotte Noland, both of Topeka; 11 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; five great-grandsons; and a stepgreat-grandchild. She was a member of the Rossville Literary and Music Circle, and was a past president. She was a member of the Rossville Senior Citizens and had served as a board member. On August 8, 1934, she was married to Joseph Freeman Foster at the Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka. He died November 23, 1978. Surviving her are a daughter, Teresa Foster, Overbrook; four sons, Robert Foster, Topeka, David Foster, Rossville, Charles Foster and Fred Foster, both of Delia; a brother, John Dale, Topeka; two sisters, Catherine Sommers and Charlotte Noland, both of Topeka, 11 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; five great-grandsons; and one stepgreat-grandchiid. | 5606 |  | Obituary- Foster, Mary Mary Ann Nordstrom Foster Mary Foster, 63, Topeka, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Midland Hospice after battling cancer for over eight years. She was born August 8, 1950, the daughter of Carl and Virginia Nordstrom. She is survived by her father Carl; her sons, Luke (Jodi) Foster of Topeka and Matthew (Misti) Foster of Frisco, Texas; her twin brother Mark (Dona) Nordstrom and sister Carla (Randy) Hearrell of Topeka. Grandchildren include Bayli McDaniel, Jayden, Kellyn, Olivia and Sophia Foster. She was preceded in death by her mother. Mary graduated from Topeka High School in 1968 and attended Washburn University. She married Fred Foster in 1969. They were divorced. She was an independent person with a big heart and kind spirit who did things her way. As a young woman, she was an award-winning horseback rider performing in rodeos and horse shows, city girls’ tennis champion, and a promising softball player. She loved horses, cars (a ’65 Mustang and a Bandit edition Trans Am were her favorites), music of all kinds, history, and everything about Topeka High School, but most of all she loved her family. She met regularly with her large group of high school classmates who jokingly called themselves the "Divas". She spent countless hours compiling her family’s genealogy and was justifiably proud of her work. She inspired those who knew of her courageous battle with three different kinds of cancer while continuing to work a physically demanding job. The family is thankful for the support given her by her friends the "Divas", and her daughter-in-law, Jodi, whose care and training as a nurse enhanced her quality of life during her last few months. Mary’s wishes were to be cremated. A visitation in celebration of her life will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Mount Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th. Private family inurnment will be at a later date. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. | 5607 |  | Obituary- Fouts, Justin Fouts Justin G. Fouts, 86, Westmoreland, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at Wamego City Hospital. He was born July 22, 1929, in Bigelow, the son of Smith L. and Rebecca L. Coffey Fouts. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1947. Mr. Fouts had lived in the Topeka Dover area for several years and later moved to the Westmoreland/Onaga area, where he owned and farmed his own ranch. He volunteered with a number of youth organizations and supported FFA, 4-H and Boy Scouts, serving as a scout leader. He was a former member of Lane Chapel in Topeka. He married Willa Geraldine Vance on Oct. 4, 1958, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Bruce Fouts and wife Roberta, Westmoreland; a daughter, Kimberly Wright and husband Chad, Westmoreland; two sisters, Theodosia Douglas, Topeka, and Rebecca Barber, Shawnee Mission; and two grandchildren, Wyatt and Hannah Fouts. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Marion Boydston, Elizabeth Tolliver, Constance Holliday, Smithena Thomas and Patricia Fouts-Lee; two brothers, Glenn Fouts and Lewis Fouts; and a grandson, Levi Fouts. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Buck’s Grove Cemetery. | 5609 |  | Obituary- Fowler, J.C. ACCIDENTAL SHOT KILLS WILLARD FARMER J.C. Fowler, 60, farmer living on the Jackman place southwest of Willard, accidently shot and killed himself about 3 o’clock Monday afternoon, while out hunting on his farm. Fowler was crossing a field and started to crawl thru a fence with a twelve gauge shotgun. The gun discharged and struck Fowler just below the heart. He died instantly. His son, Jay Fowler, was in Topeka making arrangements for a sale; so he and his father could return to Missouri. Paul Rogers, with a load of feed, was near the scene when the accident happened and notified the coroner and sheriff at Alma. It was near 6 o’clock that evening before the latter arrived and permitted the body to be removed. It was taken to the Shellabarger chapel at Topeka. | |

She grew up in the Delia Community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1988. She attended Kansas State University. Mrs. Fox was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, the Prairie Band Pottawatomie Nations, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority at KSU and the Jimmmie Lillard Post. No. 31 of the American Auxiliary at Rossville She married Kevin Fox on June 6, 1992, at St. Marys. He survives. Other survivors include her parents, Ralph and Judy Lundin, St. Marys; one brother, Steve Lundin, Rossville; and one grandmother, June McCollough, Rossville. WRECK KILLS SILVER LAKE WOMAN – a 26-year-old Silver Lake woman died Sunday from injuries suffered in a 2-vehicle accident Sunday evening on K-4 highway two miles south of Valley Falls in Jefferson County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. Amy Fox was the passenger in the back seat of a vehicle traveling west on K-4 when an eastbound vehicle attempting to make a left turn struck the car on its left side, the patrol said. Fox wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The driver of Fox’s car, Kevin Fox and two passengers, Larry Marshall and Christie Marshall, all of Silver Lake, refused treatment, the patrol said. Amy Fox was taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center by Medevac MidAmerica ambulance, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle, Opal Murray, Valley Falls, wasn’t injured, the highway patrol said. | |

She grew up in the Delia community and graduated from Rossville High School in 1988. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 1992 from Kansas State University where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She worked for the State of Kansas as an office assistant in the State Department of Human Resources. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys; a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nations; and the Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary at Rossville. She was active in step aerobics at the Community Center in Silver Lake. She was married to Kevin Fox on June 6, 1992, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. He survives. Other survivors are her parents, Ralph and Judy Lundin, St. Marys; one brother, Steve Lundin, Rossville; and her grandmother, June McCollough, Rossville. She was born February 14, 1911, in Kentucky, and lived in Rossville 36 years. She was married to Paul Jean Frampton. He died in 1956. Survivors include two sons, Edward Frampton, Northland Manor, Topeka, and Kenneth Frampton, Wichita; and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hodges, Topeka, and Mrs. Jeanette Hall, Salem, Ore. | 5614 |  | Obituary- Franklin, Benjamin Died, at his residence, five miles North of Rossville, Thursday, April 16th, 1891, aged 74 years, Benjamin Franklin. Funeral services were observed at the Twin Rose church at 2 o'clock P.M. to-day (Friday.) He was a member of the United Brethren church, one of our early settlers, and stood high in the estimation of his fellow men. Franklin, was born at Kentland, Ind., February 15, 1854, and passed way, Friday August 10, at his home at Gueda Springs, Kansas., after a short illness of three weeks following an operation, at the age of 69 years. He came to Kansas, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin when only three years old and settled near Holton, where he lived until about 13 years old. They moved then to a farm north of Rossville where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Maria James, on August 13, 1878, at Rossville. To this union was born eight children, four of whom died in infancy. Mr. Franklin and family moved to Gueda Springs about ten years ago and have resided there on a farm until the time of his death. He was a member and trustee of the Methodist church of that place. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lena Gentry, Winfield, Kan., three sons, Lester, of Rosedale, Okla., Bert and Fred of Gueda Springs; two brothers, Joe Franklin of Topeka, and Wm. Franklin of Emmett, Kans.; two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Howerton of Rossville, and Mrs. Mary Lasswell, of Topeka; and eleven grand-children. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev., G. D. Albin. Interment in the Rossville cemetery. | |

Born June 22, 1856, in Montoursville, Pa., she came to Kansas when two years old with her parents, who settled in Rising Sun. After her marriage October 1, 1890, to Joseph M, Franklin, she made her home near Rossville until 1921, when she and her husband moved to Topeka, and had lived there since. Mrs. Franklin was a member of the Central Congregational Church. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Myrnah McEntire, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Monita Cox, Cedarvale, Kan., and Miss Miriam Franklin, of the home; one son Charles Benjamin Franklin, Topeka; two brothers, John W. Kunkel, Shawnee, Okla., and Gayl M. Kunkel, Perry, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 o’clock in the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary. She wrote Rehearsal, a college textbook published by Prentice-Hall, Inc., that now is in its sixth edition. She was born October 3, 1894, on a small farm near Rossville, the daughter of Joseph and Lucy Kunkel Franklin. She attended a rural elementary school through the eighth grade, then Baker Academy at Baldwin for four years. She at¬tended Baker University three years, then Washburn College in Topeka, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She attended Columbia University in New York City one year, then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where she earned a Master of Arts degree. Miss Franklin was a member of the Central Congregational Church and, at different times, taught first and third grade Sunday school classes there. She also had worked in the Women’s Fellowship and was chairman of the Outreach committee at the church. Survivors include three nephews and five nieces Services were Friday afternoon in Central Congregational Church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. He was born March 19, 1923, in Jackson County the son of Louis B. and Orah A. James Franz. His ancestors came to this country on the Mayflower, one of them being Stephen Hopkins. Louis spent most of his life in Jackson County. Farming was his greatest love and he always said that there was no greater occupation. He farmed a third generation farm and had received several soil conservation awards. The barn and windmill built by his grandfather were very special to Louis. The tile barn on the farm was one of the first to be built in this country. The farmhouse that still stands on the farmstead was two houses moved to the farm and made into one. In his early years Louis was a teacher and operated a bulldozer digging ponds all across the area. He had to give this up due to his father’s ill heath. As a youngster Louis and one of his cousins took off on a motorcycle and headed to Mexico where they took a long vacation. Louis was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church. Louis join the NFO in the ‘60s and was a proud member of the organization; he also was a member of the Farmers Union Co-op. On Sept. 19, 1948, Louis was united in marriage to Dorothy. She died Feb. 8, 1995. Louis was later married to Ilona and they lived on a small farm outside of Hiram. She survives of the home. They traveled to Budapest, Hungary, and spent time there visiting. Due to her ill health Ilona was not able to attend the funeral. Louis is also survived by Ilona’s daughter, Ziti Swayze. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 16, at the Delia Presbyterian Church. Frederickson, of Denver, Colorado., which occurred Aug. 11, at her home in Denver. She j was the youngest of 6 born Sept 6, 1925 in Sioux City, IA to Arta Odessa Norton Coney and Robert William Coney. She is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 72 years, Jack Fredricks (Rev. John R,) children Susan Arlene Fredricks Thayer (Jim) and J. Richard Fredricks, Jr., 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Arlene had been active in Woman's Club of Topeka, Salvation Army Auxiliary, PEO, Interfaith, and co-founded the Valencia Gals neighborhood group. She worked at the VA, Indochinese refugee center in the late 70s, and state law enforcement. She loved life and people and especially enjoyed team work. He was born August 26,1910, in Blue Rapids, the son of Cyrus E. and Barbara Waldheim Freeby. Mr. Freeby worked for the Kansas State Arsenal until he retired in 1977. He was active in the U.S. Army from October 26, 1940, to June 7, 1945. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Aleutian Islands as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post # 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. On May 31, 1936, he was married to Mary M. Jacobia on May 31,1936, at Sabetha. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Everett “Butch” Freeby, Ozawkie; three daughters, Beverly Gentry, Rossville, Dianna Berry and Debbie Turner, Topeka; a brother, Chester Freeby, Hurst, Tex.; two sisters, Doris Bolton, Downey, Calif., and Maxine Wertz, Sedalia, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fred Freeby and Floyd Freeby; and three sisters, Florence Christenson, Edna Shannon and Melinda Blaser. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. His funeral service was at 11:00 Saturday at the mortuary; interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Freel, who died in the service of his country May 7, 1945, were held today at 2:00 p.m. from the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary in Topeka. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery. Freel, who was 21 years of age at the time of his death, was killed following the invasion of Okinawa. He entered the service July 1, 1942. He was born in Buffalo, Kansas, May 4, 1924, and moved with his parents to Topeka when he was two years of age. He attended State St. grade school, the Crane Junior High School and Topeka High School. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Freel of 429 Grattan; three brothers, James R. Freel, Jr., Glen Dale Freel and Larry Freel, and one sister, Janice Freel, all of the home; his grandfather, Albert L. Bixby of Rossville; several aunts, uncles and cousins. | |

He was born March 8, 1931, at Topeka, the son of James Ray and Ruby (Bixby) Freel Sr. A lifelong resident of Topeka, he was a graduate of Topeka High. Glen served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1950s. He was a car salesman at many different car dealerships in Topeka. He had been a member of the American Legion Post No. 400 in Topeka, and had been an active member of the Democratic Party. Surviving are his son, Joshua Jager, Topeka; two daughters, two brothers, James R. Freel Jr., and Larry N. Freel, both of Topeka; a sister, Janice Lundy, Yadkinville, N.C., and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rama Freel, in infancy, and his brother, Billy Freel, who was killed during World War II. Larry was born June 28,1937, in Topeka, the son of James and Ruby Bixby Freel. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1955 and attended Washburn University. On December 6,1959, Larry and Donna Barr were united in marriage. They enjoyed 57 wonderful years together. He proudly served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1960 until 1966. Larry worked for the Rock Island Railroad and retired from Auburn/Washburn USD 437. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Group. Larry was an avid outdoors-man. Fishing and hunting were a big part of his life and he enjoyed many trips to Colorado to hunt deer. Larry also enjoyed bowling, but most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Donna Freel, of the home; son, Gary Freel (Jeanette), Clovis CA; daughter, Sharon Huesers, Overland Park; grandchildren, Joshua Freel (Tiffany), Caleb Freel, Christian Huesers (Ashley) and Jordan Huesers; brother, Jim Freel, Topeka; sister, Janice Lundy (Bruce), Yadkinville NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, baby sister, Rama Freel and brothers, Billy and Glen Freel. | 5647 |  | Obituary- Freel, Ramah Freel Baby Found Dead Rumah Bernice Freel, the three weeks old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Freel, died sometime between 1 and 5 a. m. Saturday. The child was discovered to be dead by the father when he arose about 5 o’clock. The baby was perfectly well at 1 o’clock. An examination by a physician was unable to determine the cause of death except a possibility of its choking to death. Mr. and Mrs. Freel live with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bixby a mile north of town. The funeral service was held at the Bixby home Sunday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Basquin of the Methodist church. The body was interred in Rossville cemetery. | |

Mr. Freeland formerly lived in Kansas and for several years operated a restaurant in Topeka. He leaves his wife, of the home; a son; another daughter, Mrs. Dudley Lester of Dallas; and three grandson. He is a former resident of Emmett and St. Marys. Jack Robason and Calvin Wolf of Topeka drove to Dallas, Texas, last week to attend the funeral of Ollie Freeland. Mr. Freeland was laid to rest in Westland Mausoleum in Restland Memorial Cemetery in Dallas. |
