She was born December 5, 1937 at El Dorado, the daughter of Orval George and Naomi Evelyn Danner Rose. Barbara was united in marriage to Victor Eugene Haines on March 8, 1974 at Independence. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her mother, a sister, Sandra Lemon and a brother, Kenneth Rose. Survivors include two brothers, Larry and George Rose both in El Dorado; a sister, Connie Welch, Anchorage, Alaska. Barbara joined the Catholic faith on April 3, 2010 and was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment will be in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Memorial con-tributions may be made to the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and sent in care of the funeral home. Barbara A. Haines Barbara A. | 5954 |  | Obituary- Hale, Alan 2 Alan “PamSot” Hale U.S. Veteran Alan "PamSot" Hale, 68, of Rossville, Ks. passed away Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Rossville Valley manor. He was born December 19, 1947 in Horton, Ks. the son of Louis E. and Pearl (Herrick) Hale. Alan graduated from Topeka High School in 1965 and he also attended Haskell Indian School in Lawrence. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Alan had lived most of his life in Topeka, working in construction. He had also lived in California for 10 years in he late 1970s and early 1980s. He was a member of Drum Religion and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. Survivors include two sisters, Linda D. Hale of Mayetta, Ks. and Joraine Tuckwin of Hiawatha, Ks. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Cecelia Hale, Julia Deener and Anita Hale and a brother, Louis "Sonny" Hale, Jr. Drum services will be Tuesday evening, December 29, 2016 at Dance ground Building, west of Mayetta. Burial will be Wednesday afternoon in the Dance ground Cemetery. Alan will lie in state beginning late Monday afternoon at the mercer Funeral Home in Holton. | |
| 5955 |  | Obituary- Hale, John Murder of John Hale Last Sunday afternoon Peter La Tranch shot and instantly killed John Hale, at the Diminished Reserve in the neighboring county of Jackson, a few miles from the Shawnee county line. The murder took place about 5 o'clock, at the ranch of Dr. Swinburne, where a number of Indians and a few white people were gathered together to witness a horse race. La Ranch is a halfbreed, being a mixture of French and Indian. On last Fourth of July, La Ranch and a son of the murdered man were in St. Marys, where the former without provocation it is said, gave the latter a severe beating, and since that time had been making threats against the father of young Hale. Sunday was the first time they had met since the Fourth of July, when Hale told La Tranch that he heard he had been threatening him. He had scarcely spoken the words when La Tranch drew his revolver and fired, the ball entering his left side killing him almost instantly. John Hale was a resident of Rossville, and has lived in the county since 1860. He was about 45 years old and leaves a wife and four children. He was quiet and inoffensive and all who knew him speak well of him. After the killing La Tranch jumped on a horse and rode away and is still at large. It is supposed he is heading for the Indian Territory. Later. News was received Thursday morning that La Tranch had been captured in the woods near the scene of the killing by the sheriff of Jackson county. He was taken to Holton. | 5956 |  | Obituary- Hall, Edward 1 Hall Edward Alvia Hall, son of Benjamin and Belle Wolfe Hall, was born Tuesday, April 8, 1919, at Whiting, and passed from this life on Sunday, April 10 at the age of 64 years and two days. Ed lived in Holton all his life and was employed as a soil conservationist for 31 years. In December 1938 he was married to Maysol Bennett. To this union were born six children: two daughters, Joan and Beverly and four sons, James, Dennis, Warren and Gary. He was later married to Elsie Morgan on Saturday, November 6, 1971 at First Christian Church in Holton where they were members. Ed was preceded in death by his son, James, in 1939, and by his father in May 1965. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Hall, of the home, his mother, Belle Hall, of Topeka; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Crosswhite of Portland Oregon, two brothers, Lawrence Hall of Portland, Oregon, and Ben Hall of Lawn, Texas. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joan Marlatt of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Beverly Browning of Gladstone, Oregon; three sons, Dennis Hall of Gladstone, Oregon, Warren Hall of Topeka, and Gary Hall of Delia; by two stepsons, Dick Morgan of Manhattan, and Bob Morgan of Holton; 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Ed will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, warm and loving man. He enjoyed life, the beauty of flowers, the outdoors and being immersed in music. | |

Other survivors include four sons, Terry Lee Hall, Donald Leon Hall and Robert Allen Hall, all of Topeka, and Danny Joe Hall, at the home; a daughter, Lori Lea Hail, Topeka; a stepson, H. Gede Frost, Topeka, and Danny Joe Hall, Delia; a daughter, Lori Lea Hall, Topeka; three stepsons, Terry Hall, Donald Hall and Robert Hall, all of Topeka; her mother, Lucille I. Griffiths, Topeka; three brothers, William B. "Birk” Griffiths, Delia, Danny L. Griffiths, Tecumseh, and Billy “Lu" Griffiths, Holton; two sisters, Dona I. Hartzell, Topeka, and Dana I. Mary Ann was born to Henry and Regina Orchlin Weishaar, October 2, 1942, in an Atchison hospital but lived in Nortonville, Kansas. Mary Ann attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, graduating from Nortonville High School. She worked for the State of Kansas and was part owner of Hall's Oldsmobile Salvage, Soldier and Hall's Painting for man years until she retired and moved to Topeka. She was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart, Warren Hall, October 22, 1960, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Nortonville. He survives at the home. Other survivors include three sons, Gregory Hall (Lashell), Shawnee, Kansas, Darren Hall (Julie) Topeka and Thad Hall (Melissa), Manhattan; three grandchildren, Dartanian Hall (Hannah Silva), Samantha Hall, Manhattan, and Zackery Hall, Topeka; one great-grandson, Lysander Hall; three sisters, LaVern Davis (Edwin), Nortonville, Betty Franks (James), Topeka and Judy Wagner, Topeka; sisters-in-law, Peachier Weishaar and Nancy Weishaar; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kenneth Hall died in 1979; three brothers, Edwin Weishaar, Elvin Weishaar, and Vernon Weishaar; sister, Genevieve Drimmel; baby sister, Eileen Weishaar; brothers-in-law, John Wagner and Clarence Drimmel; and sister-in-law, Helen Weishaar. Mary Ann lived for her husband, children and grandchildren and loved flowers. Warren was born May 28, 1940, in Holton, Kansas, to Edward and Maysol Bennett Hall. He attended grade school at Sunny Slope, Soldier, Kansas, attended Holton High School for three and one-half years and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1959. Warren worked at Goodyear for 13 years. He owned and operated Hall’s Oldsmobile Salvage at Soldier. He also owned Hall’s Painting for many years until he retired and moved to Topeka. Warren and Mary Ann Weishaar were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nortonville October 22, 1960. She passed away February 25, 2020. Warren was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of the Delia Lions Club, Kansas City Arrowhead Pontiac Club and Oldsmobile Club of America for 15 years. Survivors include three sons, Gregory Hall (Lashell), Shawnee, Kansas, Darren Hall (Julie), Topeka, Thad Hall (Melissa), Manattan, Kansas; three grandchildren, Dartanian Hall (Hannah Silva) and Samantha Hall, Manhattan and Zackery Hall, Topeka; great-grandson, Lysander Hall; a sister, Beverly Browning (Jim), Topeka; and numerous nieces and nephews. | 5967 |  | Obituary- Hall-Smith, Ida Ida M. Anno Hall-Smith Ida M. Anno Hall-Smith, 80, of Tecumseh, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at a Topeka hospital. She was born July 25, 1931, in Topeka, the daughter of Claude D. and Elsie M. Beary Anno. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1949. She lived in Topeka area all of her life. She retired from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Jan. 3, 1992. Ida was a 42-year member of the Clarice Chapter 390, Order of the Eastern Star at Wakarusa where she served as past matron in 1973, 1977, 1983 and 1990-1991. She also was a district aide in 1981-1982 and served as a grand page in 1984 and a special grand page in 1991 for the Grand Chapter of the Kansas Order of Eastern Star. She served as past president of the Past District Aides of District 14 and past president and secretary of the Past Matrons and Past Patrons of Topeka District 14. She was also a member of the White Shrine Trinity 7 and the Ancient Toltec Rite Topeka Council 1, both of Topeka. Ida was a member of the Kaw Valley Girl Scout Council and served as a service unit coordinator for 17 years for the Shawnee Heights Girl Scouts. She also served on several other Girl Scout committees and was the Jacernee Association chairman for three years. She was a member of the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, the Wagonears Camping Club, the Carriages Camping Club of Millersburg, Ind., the Wheat State Chapter 43, where she served as president from 2003-2006. In 1998, she was the Kansas State Queen and served as president in 2000-2001 for the Kansas Sunchasers Retirees. Ida married Cecil H. Hall on May 2, 1952. He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1984. She later married George Nelven Smith from Rossville, on Jan. 11, 1992. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 2011. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and a great-grand-daughter. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Deborah D. and Challan Barker of Maple Hill, Lynnette L. and Michael Weinbrecht of Topeka, two granddaughters, three grandsons, one great-granddaughter, five stepchildren, seven stepgranddaughters, seven stepgrandsons, seven stepgreat-grandchildren, and one sister, Emma Wilson of Tecumseh. Services were held Nov. 22 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial followed in Zion Cemetery southeast of Topeka. On February 19, 1939, she married Arthur L. Hallert in Olathe. Maudie and Arthur owned and operated the Union Clothing Store in Topeka for many years. Arthur died May 21, 1990. Private services were at Mt. Hope Chapel in Topeka. Entombment was in Mt. Hope Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be given to the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. She graduated from Silver Lake High School. Mrs. Hallert was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church and a 69-year member of Chapter No. 76 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former member of Moose Lodge and the Shawnee Country Club. She married Arthur L Hallert on Feb. 12, 1939, in Olathe. He died May 21, 1990. Private services will be at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel. Entombment will be in Mount Hope Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. | 5970 |  | Obituary- Hallmark, Dorothy 1 [contains full transcription here] Dorothy Helen (Kalb) Hallmark, 91 years of age, passed away on May 18, 2018 while in home hospice at her share residence with son David and his wife Vicki in Houston, Texas. David was at his mother's side when she passed away with cardiac complications. She was blessed to have many loved ones viusit her bedside during the last month of her life. Dorothy was born on October 19, 1926 at her Grandmothers Black's home, west of Baldwin City, Kansas. She was the first born of Ralph Ingalls Kalb and Mary Helen (breithaupt) Kalb who were dairy farmers residing at and working the original Black farm. In a few years, the Kalb family grew giving Dorothy two younger sisters, Mary Mildred and Laverne. The Kalb family lived a meager life during the depression, having to sew their own dresses made from emptied feed sacks but they made do during the lean years. They are their own produce, eggs, and milk. They often shared their food with more unfortunate neighbors and townsfolk living in Baldwin City. At a young age, Dorothy loved to read and listen to mystery programs on the radio. During her life she was oft5en heard saying, "A good book can carry you to far off lands without taking a single step." She attended Black Jack School District #9 along with her sisters Mary and Laverne. Black Jack was only a quarter mile to the east of the Kalb's homestead and housed children in grades ine through eight. Dorothy's graduating class had two students. She attended Baldwin City High School and though Dorothy had to return home early each day to do her chores, she was an avid member of 4-H, the choir, and the Pep-Club. In the summer of 1943, after graduating from high school, Dorothy did her part for the war effor5t by working at The Sunflower Munitions plant in De Soto. One afternoon when returning home on a Sunflower bus she exited and was hit by a drunken driver. She was given little change of living but struggled to do so. She did keep her life, but unfortunately she did not keep her left leg. It was amputated above the knee. The loss was disheartening to the 18 year old Dorothy. She missed her first semester of college while completing a lengthy physical and emotional rehabilitation. During this time, her father, modified an old Ford sp his daughter could drive the clutch operated vehicle using hand controls. With much practice she became efficient at driving the car and was able to attend Baker University at Baldwin during the spring sesmet of 1944. She drovew to school and returned to her home each day. The following year Dorothy changed her residence to The Independent Cooperative House on campus where she made many life-long friends. Dorothy was affectionately called “Dot”, “Dottie”, but most often “Kalbie” by the residents of the Cooperative. It was said by all that she was sweet, had a friendly personality, a positive out-look on life, and always wore a smile. During her Baker years she was a member of The University Choir, The Home-Economics Club, and The Independents who did charitable works. In her senior she was one of twelve students chosen to The College Fellowship group, representing the Independents at a nation-wide symposium for college groups dedicating their time to the more unfortunate. Dorothy completed her degree after the spring semester of 1947 and in 1948 received her Bachelor of Science degree stressing English and Home Economics Education. Little did she know at the time, Dorothy met her future husband at the age of fifteen. Sixteen year old Leslie Hallmark, his mother, sister, and Stepfather attended a small dinner at the Ralph Kalb farmhouse to celebrate Leslie’s mother’s marriage to Howard Kalb. Howard was Ralph Kalb’s uncle and Dorothy’s great-uncle. Although they were distantly related by marriage, Dorothy thought that Leslie was really cute! During WWII, while Dorothy was in school and Les was in the navy, they corresponded with each other and developed a close relationship. They were engaged to each other in 1947 and were married on August 25, 1948. That day Dorothy Helen Hallmark from Baldwin City was wed to Leslie Glenn Hallmark from Wellsville. The wedding took place at The First United Methodist Church in Baldwin, where the members of both families were also members of the same church. The newly married couple took up residency south of Lawrence, Kansas overlooking the Wabaunsee River. While Les worked for The Douglas County Road Works, Dorothy was of the home expecting her first child. Tragedy visited Dorothy’s life once again when her first born (Mary) was premature and died only days after her birth. To allay her grief, Dorothy’s mother convinced her to take her first teaching job in Everest, Kansas. Her mother’s twin brother was Principal and Superintendent of Everest Schools. Dorothy accepted the job offered by her uncle. Though Les stayed at their home outside of Lawrence continuing to work, he made the 60 mile trip to Everest often. With two months left in her teaching contract, Dorothy was with child once again. Dorothy quit her teaching job and the couple moved to Lawrence at 813½ Massachusetts, a large one room flat above a shoe store. A healthy David Hallmark was born in January of 1951. Needing more room, Dorothy and Les moved to a small house 4th street in North Lawrence. Dorothy raised her son while Les worked two different jobs and attended The University of Kansas. In July of 1952 a second son, Alan, was born. In 1954, Les received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. The Hallmark’s then moved from Lawrence to Circleville, Kansas for Les to begin his teaching career while Dorothy remained in the home raising her two boys. After one year at Circleville, Dorothy decided to start teaching again. The Hallmarks moved to Narka Kansas, beginning their long list of communities in which one or both would be teaching. The two Hallmark’s teaching careers included 12 different High Schools, but 30 of Dorothy’s 37 years of teaching were in Spring Hill, St. Marys and Rossville. The love of reading influenced Dorothy to shift from the classroom to become a Librarian. She took several college classes during the summer and became Spring Hill High School’s librarian in 1960. She began working toward her Master’s Degree in Library Science the following summer. While in her Masters training program, she transformed the library at Spring Hill from a reading room with no book indexing system into an organized facility where students could do their data gathering and research, but still enjoy a good book once in a while. She earned her MS in Library Science from Emporia State University in 1966. The Hallmarks then moved to the St. Marys-Rossville area and began teaching for USD 321. Dorothy used her librarian talent to transform both St. Marys High School and Rossville High School into cutting edged, technological facilities. This was an accomplishment of which she was quite proud. In 1971, Dorothy and Les left USD 321 for three years, but returned to live in St. Marys while teaching at Rossville for the remainder of their teaching careers. Dorothy retired in 1988 after 12 consecutive at Rossville High School. Both Dorothy and Les had many teacher friends in the area and were well liked by their students. Dorothy and Les bought a fifth wheeler and began travelling extensively throughout all of the 50 states in the US and many trips to Mexico. Dorothy wanted to see, in person, some of those ‘far off lands’ of which she had read. After several years of travel, they sold their house in St. Marys and found a winter home-base at Citrus Valley RV Park in McAllen, Texas. While at The Park, Dorothy organized their library and also became a prodigious quilter, gifting family members and friends with her beautiful products. Each year she donated a quilt to the Lakota tribe in South Dakota that was given to a selected twelve year old homeless girl at Christmas time. Dorothy developed close friendships at Citrus Valley, becoming a member of The Quilters Club, and participating in the activities The Park had to offer. After Leslie passed away in 1996, Dorothy continued to travel the roads in her own mini-RV. She visited her sons’ families in Houston, Texas and Richmond, Virginia during holidays and summers. Dorothy also traveled to Kansas often to see her sisters, their families, and close friends. Dorothy loved to quilt, read, and have fun with her friends and family. You could tell she was contented when she whistled a cheerful tune. When becoming especially pleased, she would excitedly exclaim, “Neat, neat, neat!” After her macular degeneration and mobility problems advanced, Dorothy’s doctors advised that she not live alone. She then moved to Houston, TX and received fulltime care from her son David and his wife Vicki in their home. Dorothy Hallmark was a benefactor to many organizations: Emporia State University, Baker University, The University of Kansas, Kansas State University, The Animal Justice League, Disabled Veterans, The Paraplegic Artists Group, The Sioux Nation’s St. Joseph’s Indian School, and others. She was especially pleased with establishing and administrating The Hallmark Scholarship Fund immediately after her husband’s death in 1996. The Fund awards a scholarship to a selected college bound high school senior living in the Rossville and St. Mary’s area. She especially loved to receive the thankyou note from each of the 22 recipients from 1996 to 2017. Alas, she did not get to read the 2018 thank you note, as she passed away two days before the message was received. Dorothy Hallmark was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great aunt, and a beloved friend to so many other people. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Ingalls Kalb and Mary Helen (Breithaupt) Kalb, daughter Mary Hallmark, husband Leslie G. Hallmark, and both sisters Mary Mildred (Kalb) Clark and Laverne (Kalb) Deay. Surviving family are sons David and Alan, two daughter-in-law’s, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. She loved them all. An August 25th memorial services will be held in Lawrence, Kansas. Mr. Hallmark was a retired teacher. He taught at the high school level for 31 years and had taught 18 years in the Kaw Valley School District No. 321, 13 years as an art and mathematics teacher at Rossville High School. He earlier had worked for the U.S. government as an ammunition inspector at Texarkana, Texas. He served as a gunner's mate on merchant ships during World War II. He was born Aug. 15, 1925, near Blue Mound, the son of Elmer and Jennie June Johnson Hallmark. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1954. He had lived the past three winters at Citrus Valley R.V. Park at McAllen, Texas. Mr. Hallmark was a member of educational organizations, the United Methodist Church and a life member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. He was married to Dorothy H. Kalb on Aug. 25, 1948, at Baldwin City. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, David G. Hallmark, Houston, and Alan B. Hallmark, Richmond, Va.; his mother, Jennie Johnson Thompson, Overbrook; a sister, Irma Fine, Lawrence; and five grandchildren. Memorial services were held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys. Mr. Hallmark was born August 15, 1925, to Elmer and Jennie June Johnson Hallmark in the Blue Mound area near Lawrence. He attended rural and elementary schools in Douglas County, Ks., and Washington County, Mo., junior high school in Lawrence. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1943, after which he joined the United States Navy and served in World War II as a gunner’s mate on a merchant ship. Hallmark married Dorothy Helen Kalb, August 25, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. An infant daughter, Mary, died July 25, 1949. After his wife’s retirement, the couple traveled extensively in the United States in their recreational vehicle and also enjoyed touring Mexico. The last three years they wintered in Texas at Citrus Valley RV Park, McAllen. Clad Hamilton Had Been in Kansas Since 1877 Served in Spanish – American and the World Wars Illness of several months proved fatal at 1:30 0’clock this morning to Col. Clad Hamilton, 68, one of the leading attorneys of Topeka and senior member of the law firm of Hamilton, Campbell & Flack. Colonel Hamilton had been in Stormont hospital five weeks. Clad Hamilton was born at East Meredith, Delaware county, New York, May 17, 1867. He was the son of John H. and Margaret Mitchell Hamilton. His father was engaged in farming. Came to Kansas in 1877 Mr. Hamilton attended common schools in New York state. He came to Kansas in 1877 and finished his grade school education here. He grew up as a printer, setting type on weekly papers in Howard and Emporia, finally becoming a reporter on the Emporia Gazette. Mr. Hamilton, while working as a printer, became an expert cornet player and spent about a year and a half, traveling as a professional musician. He went to Colorado in the spring of 1891 and was employed as a reporter on the Pueblo Chieftain. While working in Howard, Mr. Hamilton had become interested in law and made a study of it. From Pueblo he went to Lawrence where he passed an examination and was admitted to the senior class in the University of Kansas law school. He was graduated in 1892 with the degree of bachelor of laws, was admitted to the bar and the same year came to Topeka, where he became identified with the law firm of Gleed and Gleed. Served in Spanish – American War In 1898, Mr. Hamilton left his law practice to enlist in the army. He served in the Spanish-American war and the Philippine insurrection with the famous Twentieth Kansas infantry, reaching the rank of captain. He returned to Topeka in November 1899, and opened his own law office, which he maintained continuously since. He was in partnership with the late Judge Whitcomb from 1903 until the latter’s elevation to the bench in 1911. Thereafter he was in partnership with his brother, the late Clay Hamilton, until the latter’s death in 1925, under the firm name of Hamilton & Hamilton. Later, his firm became Hamilton, Campbell & Flack. Colonel Hamilton served in the state senate in the sessions of 1909 and 1911, and was an instructor in the Washburn law school for some time. He served with the Kansas National Guard troops on the Mexican border in 1916-17 as staff officer with the rank of major. In the World war, he served overseas as colonel of the 137th infantry, Thirty-Fifth division. He had entered the service with the rank of major. Mr. Hamilton was married January 17, 1901, to Miss Helen Wells. They were the parents of two children, Mrs. A. W. Redfield and Laurence Hamilton, who live at Harbor Beach, Mich. He is also survived by a brother, J. C. Hamilton, of Lansing, Kan.; and two sisters, Mrs. Charles A. Morris, Moline, Kan., and Mrs. W. M. Brownell, East Meredith, N. Y. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock at the Wall-Diffenderfer mortuary. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery. | |

Born April 1, 1900, in Delia, she married Charlie W. Hamilton July 26, 1928, at Hutchinson. He survives. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Altar Society, South Hutchinson. She died Sunday, Dec. 28, at a Halstead nursing home. Mrs. Hamilton spent four years teaching in Nebraska elementary schools. She was born May 9, 1885, at Marble Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Elinor Sallee. She was graduated from Nora Springs, Iowa, High School with honors and attended Kearney State College at Kearney, Neb. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of Kingsdown Presbyterian Church. She was a student of the Bible and a former short story writer. She was married to Edgar M. Hamilton March 17, 1909, at Minden, Neb. They farmed near Minden until 1939 when they retired and moved to Fresno, Calif. He died Nov. 4, 1951. Three children also preceded her in death, John Hamilton and Janet Hamilton in infancy and Earl Hamilton in 1971. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Martha C. Adair, Halstead; two sons, Dr. Ralph S. Hamilton, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Marion E. Hamilton, Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hamilton was cremated, and inurnment will be later in a Minden, Neb., cemetery. Jessie May Sallee was born to Andrew and Elinor Sallee on May 9, 1885, at Marble Rock, Iowa. She graduated from Nora Springs, Iowa High School with honors and spent four years teaching in elementary schools in Nebraska. On March 17, 1909 she was united in marriage to Edgar M. Hamilton, a farmer residing at Minden, Neb. They lived on a farm near Minden until 1939, when they retired and moved to Fresno, Calif. To this union were born six children. Mr. Hamilton and three of the children preceded her in death. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Kingsdown, Kan., Presbyterian Church. She was a student of the Bible and at one time a writer of short stories. She was never able to attend college long enough to receive a degree, but she was an admirer and promoter of education. She was interested in geneology and studying the stars. Surviving Mrs. Hamilton are: two sons, Dr. Ralph S. Hamilton, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Marion E. Hamilton, Syracuse, Kan.; a daughter, Martha C. Adair, Halstead; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place in Wichita. The inurnment and memorial service will be at Minden, Neb., at a later date. | |

Starting as an apprentice when 14 years old with the Santa Fe in the Topeka shops, he learned welding and blacksmithing and served almost continuously at the trade since. For the last 20 years he had worked for the Cheasapeake & Ohio railroad and intended to retire on a pension next spring. A fraternal organization for railroad employees furnished an escort for his body from Barboursville to Topeka, where burial was made in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Hudson is now the only living member of her immediate family. | |

She was born on November 14, 1929, at the family home near Delia, Kansas, the daughter of John Thomas and Grace (Kelly) Cowan. Mrs. Hammel attended the Goldenrod country school in the Washington Township in Jackson County and was a 1947 graduate of Delia High School. Following high school she moved to Topeka, Kansas where she went to work for Capper Publications from 1947 until 1952. On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Loren Hammel at the Assumption Church in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in Topeka and Wichita prior to moving to Manhattan in 1963. Mrs. Hammel was a Library Secretary for USD 383 at Manhattan High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and Circle 10 of the church altar society. She was also active with the Over 50 group at her church. Mrs. Hammel was an avid reader, wonderful cook and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's events and activities. Survivors include her husband, Loren Hammel, of the home; one daughter: Cathy Eads and her husband Ray of Council Grove, Kansas and two sons: Richard Hammel and his wife Mary of Manhattan and Daniel Hammel and his wife Beth Schlemper of Sylvania, Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Lauren Hammel, Katie Eads, Kirby Eads, Curtis fleeter and Grant Wright; three sisters: Elaine Phillips, Olathe, Kansas; Louise Deiter and her husband Howard, Maple Hill, Kansas; Ann Steinbock and her husband Joe, Topeka, Kansas; and one brother: Ronald Cowan and his wife Mary of Topeka, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents. A rosary service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. He was born March 26, 1941 at Wichita, the son of Harry M. and Estyl M. Hall Hammer. Harry graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1959. Mr. Hammer was in law-enforcement working for the Kansas Highway Patrol Capital Police and for the city of Rossville as Chief of Police for many years before he retired. He was a member of the Rossville Christian Church and was an active member of the Legion Riders at Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 in Rossville. Harry was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Topeka. He was married to Shirley Goodwin on October 17, 1965 at Perry. She survives of the home. Donald worked for Southwestern Bell for 22 years and took early retirement. He was a self-employed Real Estate Developer and Entrepreneur. He was a member of Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #534, and was on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He married Patsy J. Nordmeyer at the Assumption Church on September 14, 1968. She survives. She earned her master’s in Reading Methods and Economics and Finance in 1956, from the University of Nevada at Reno. She taught in Oklahoma from 1917 to 1928. In 1929, she came to Kansas and taught at the Security Benefit Private School and two years in Manhattan. She then came to Topeka and taught in public schools for 22 years. She was a school supervisor in Las Vegas from 1955 to 1975. She then re¬turned to Topeka. She was a member of the Catholic Church of the Assumption. She was a charter member of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an honor so¬ciety and was a past president of the Topeka Business and Profes¬sional Women’s Club. She was born on June 11, 1920 in St. Marys, Kansas the daughter of Claude A. and Catherine Mainey Ulrich. She married Leo F. Hanrahan in Topeka on September 15, 1948. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1996. Also preceding were two sisters, Catherine Pitt and Lucille Ulrich, and three brothers, Lester, Thomas and Leo Ulrich. Survivors include three sons, Patrick of Kansas City, Missouri, Michael of Seattle, Washington, and Kelly of Derby, Kansas, and one sister Helen Marx of Topeka, and many loving nieces and nephews who were her pride and joy. Mary graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1938 and St. Francis School of Nursing in 1941. She worked as a Registered Nurse at VA Hospital, private duty nursing, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and retired from Memorial Hospital in Topeka in 1982. She never really gave up nursing. After retirement she cared for many relatives and friends. Mary loved traveling, crafts, playing cards, casinos, sports and was an avid KU fan. She was a member of Mater Dei Assumption Parish, St. Francis Nurses Alumni, Eagles Lodge #4319, VFW Post #1650 Auxiliary and American Legion Post #1 Auxiliary. Mary donated her body to the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. She was a homemaker and later worked for the Delia School District as a cook. 1 Surviving her are one daughter, Helen Dohrman Burgett, Topeka; seven grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren. A rosary was recited at 7:00 Sunday evening at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 Monday morning at the Immac¬ulate Conception Church. Interment was in Mt. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death. He was born April 7, 1925, in Delia. He served three years with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific where he received disabling wounds. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka.
