| 4801 |  | Obituary- Coxen. Manuel MANUEL COXEN Manuel Coxen, 73, Osage City, died Friday, June 5, 1981, at an Emporia hospital. He had cancer. He was born December 26, 1907, near Carbondale, the son of Albert and Mary Johnson Coxen. He moved from Lyndon to Osage City in 1929. Mr. Coxen was a brick and stonemason. He was a member of Brick and Stonemason Union Local No. 3 at Topeka and the Church of Christ. He was married to Helen Mueller February 1, 1930, at Lyndon. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Alice Caton, Rossville, and Lela Coxen, of the home; a son, Alan Coxen, Bartlesville, Okla.; four sisters, Mrs. Erma Behrens, Overbrook, Mrs. Inez Hipsher, Mrs. Ruby Haid and Mrs. Elsie Lindburg, all of Topeka; and six grandchildren. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Crable Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Osage City Cemetery. He was born March 3, 1949, in the Bronx, New York, the son of Joseph and Eileen (Price) Crai. He graduated from Mamaroneck High School. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Joe was employed by the New York City Police Department for 13 years, retiring in 1985. Joe married Virginia “Ginny” Crai on February 6, 1971 in Topeka, Kansas. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his daughter, Michelle L. Crai, son, Joseph I. Crai, 6 grand¬children, Robert Bennett, Drake Johnson, Isabella Johnson, Alexa Crai, Randi Crai, Kyley Crai; and broth¬ers, Richard Crai and Robert Crai. He was preceded in death by his parents. Joe enjoyed fishing, hunt¬ing, bingo, and being the commander of the Rossville American Legion Post #31, of which he was a member for a number of years. Joe was cremated. Pottawatomie County authorities said the child died of carbon monoxide poisoning. She was born July 28, l983, at Topeka. She moved with her parents from Wamego to Nebraska in 1984, to South Dakota in 1987 and to Albion, Mich., in 1988. She was a kindergarten student at Springport, Mich. Survivors besides her parents include a sister, Mandy Crane of the home; grandpar¬ents, Guy and Peggy Crane, Wamego. and Thomas and Patricia Routh, Havensville; great-grandparents, Glee and Doris Vanna- man, Ashland, Don and Teresa Salsbery, Bal¬dwin, and Ray and Josephine Routh, Bal¬dwin; and a great-great-grandmother, Florence Goodman, Stockton, Mo. She was born October 28, 1909, at Rossville, the daughter of Harvey D. and Charity Campbell James. She attended Rossville public schools and was graduated from Rossville High School. Mrs. Crater was a graduate of Strickler’s Business College, Topeka, and taught at the school for several years. She was later employed by a Topeka certified public accounting firm for 20 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Michael James Crater, Topeka; and two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Stevens, Yakima, Wash., and Mrs. Mildred Cless, Topeka. Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery. | |

Woolworth store, later for John Mor¬rell Packing Co., and for Kansas Power and Light Co., before she re¬tired. She was born Oct. 29, 1909, in De¬lia, the daughter of Lester Joel and Ida Margaret McClain Jackson. She spent most of her life in Topeka. Mrs. Cravens was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, the Girls Club at KP&L and Helena Chap¬ter No. 210 of Order of Eastern Star. She was married to Charles Cra¬vens July 23, 1927, in La Crosse, Wis. He died Aug. 5, 1932. Survivors include two sons, Charles J. Cravens, Canoga Park, Calif., and Donald L. Cravens, Emporia; three sisters, Inez Riley, Bremerton, Wash., and Minnie Cravens and Winnie Lynch, both of Topeka; and four grandchildren. He retired from the Topeka Police Department as lieutenant of detec¬tives in 1958 after 23 years of ser¬vice, and later served as bailiff of the Second Division Court from 1962 to 1970. He had lived in Topeka most of his life. Mr. Cravens was born Oct. 24, 1907, in Fostoria, the son of John Charles and Artamesha Hoig Cra¬vens. He married Minnie M. Jackson on Jan. 28, 1928, in Topeka. She survives at the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Virginia Taylor and Patricia Gibson, both of Arkansas City; eight grandchildren; and six great¬grandchildren. She was born Feb. 13, 1918, on a farm near Hawley, in Grant County, Okla., the youngest of seven children of Lester DeWitt and Manerva May Cox Trenton. She married Vance R. Crawford on June 19, 1949, in Enid, Okla. He died Feb. 17, 1991. Mrs. Crawford also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kylie Crawford, on March 8, 1979. Survivors include a daughter, Gay V. Crawford, Topeka; a son, Rudy T. Crawford, and his wife, Deb, Paxico; a grandson, Calab Crawford, Rossville; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rossville Christian Church. She was born February 13, 1918, on a farm near Hawley, in Grant County, OK, the daughter of Lester DeWitt and Manerva May Cox Trenton. She had lived in the Rossville community for many years. Betty grew up on a farm near Hawley, the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Gore Consolidated No. 1 High School, Wakita, OK. She had worked at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, NM. She moved to Delia in 1957, and later to Rossville. She had worked for Culver Aircraft in Wichita during World War II, and had been a substitute rural mail carrier at Delia. She was a member of the Rossville Christian Church where she was active, serving as a Sunday School teacher and she helped organize the quilting group. She was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Rossville, and was a member of NARFE. She married Vance R. Crawford on June 19, 1949, at Enid, OK. He died February 17, 1991. A granddaughter, Kylie Crawford, died March 8, 1970. Survivors include a daughter, Gay V. Crawford, Topeka; a son, Rudy T. Crawford; and a grandson, Caleb Crawford. Her service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday (today) at the Rossville Christian Church. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-7 Monday at Piper Funeral Chapel, Rossville. Gay was born November 3, 1956 at Santa Fe, NM., the daughter of Vance R. and Betty M. Trenton Crawford. Gay graduated from Rossville High School and Kansas State University where she earned her B.S. of Business Administration-Accounting and a B.S. in Political Science-Public Administration. Gay was a Certified Internal Auditor, she had worked as a senior Lease Auditor at Collective Brands. She had been the Director of Finance at the Topeka YMCA. While working for Westar Energy, she held several different positions including being an Accounting Supervisor, an Accounting Analyst, Fuel Accountant, Budget Analyst, an Internal Auditor, and a Financial Communications Specialist. Gay was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, ABWA, YWCA of Topeka where she held several offices and served on several boards. She also was a past member of public relation/fundraising for Helping Hands Humane Society, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, ERC Designer Showhouse, Whisper Walk, ACS Topeka Relay for Life. Gay was preceded in death by her parents, and a niece, Kylie. Survivors include her brother, Rudy (Debra) Crawford, Topeka; nephew, Caleb Crawford: boyfriend, Bob Jensen, Topeka; her fur babies, Lola and Gypsy; several cousins and many steadfast friends. Celebration of Life Services will be at 3:30 P.M. Saturday, May 22, 2021, at the Rossville Christian Church. Inurnment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. He was bom March 5, 1913, in Hennessey, Okla., the son of DeWitt Talmadge and Blondena Blanche Rainey Crawford. He graduated from Enid (Okla.) High School in 1930. He attended Oklahoma A&M College at Stillwater one year. Mr. Crawford served with the U.S. Navy Seabees, European Theater of Operations during World War II. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service at Enid, Okla., Santa Fe, N.M., and Delia, retiring in 1975 after 40 years of service. He was an active member and held several offices, including board chairman at the Rossville Christian Church. He was a life member and past commander at American Legion Jimmie Lillard Post 31, Rossville. He was active in the Silver Lake Community Choir, was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Mr. Crawford served on the Rossville Drainage Board and was active in many other organizations in the Rossville community. He was married to Betty May Trenton on June 19, 1949 at Enid, Okla. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Gay V. Crawford, Topeka; a son, Rudy Crawford, Rossville; one grandson; two brothers, Harold Crawford, Enid. Okla., and Ted Crawford, Norman, Okla. Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kylie Crawford, in 1979. Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 24, at Verschelden Chapel in St. Marys. He was graduated in 1930 from Enid High School and at¬tended Oklahoma A&M at Stillwater. Mr. Crawford was a member of the Christian Church in Rossville and was chairman of the church board. Agnes was born July 6, 1915 in Delia, the daughter of Frank and Annie Fleming. She grew up in the rural Delia area and moved to the Grove area after her marriage. She was a member of the H. D. U., the Lucky-5 Club and a project leader for the Grove 4-H. Agnes was a Sunday school teacher and elder at the Rossville Presbyterian Church. Agnes married Elmer J. Crawshaw on January 2, 1935 in Topeka. He died September 20, 2002. Survivors include a son, Robert E. Crawshaw, Silver Lake; two daughters, Marjorie A. Kratina, Ross¬ville, and Barbara J. Hitchcock, Silver Lake; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; and a sister, Melva Marney, New Castle, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in North Topeka. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Grove. | 4817 |  | Obituary- Crawshaw, Elmer Elmer J. Crawshaw Elmer John Crawshaw, 91, Topeka, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at a Topeka care home. Mr. Crawshaw farmed and raised livestock near Silver Lake his entire life. He was born June 20, 1911, in Wakarusa, the son of John Thomas and Bessie Rae Miller Crawshaw. He lived most his life in the Silver Lake area. Mr. Crawshaw was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church, where he served for 16 years as an elder. He served on the Walnut School Board, the Grove Elevator Board, and the Farm Bureau Board for Shawnee County and for Grove Township for the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He also was a 4-H livestock leader. He married Agnes B. Fleming on Jan.2, 1935, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Robert E. Crawshaw, Silver Lake; two daughters, Marjorie A. Kratina, Rossville, and Barbara J. Hitchcock, Silver Lake; two brothers, Franklin Crawshaw, Eudora, and Woodrow Crawshaw, Topeka; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. | 4818 |  | Obituary- Crawshaw, Hazel Hazel Crawshaw Mrs. George Crawshaw Dead Mrs. George Crawshaw died Saturday evening at her home two miles north of Maple Hill after a very brief illness. Mr. Crawshaw was in Florida at the time of her death, having bid her goodbye the previous Tuesday, when she was apparently in the best of health. Burial took place yesterday in the Maple Hill cemetery. Mrs. Crawshaw was only 18 years old. She was a daughter of H. E. Lemon, the painter and paperhanger who resided here until last summer. | |

Crawshaw A 36-year-old Belvue man who was injured in a traffic accident of US-24 west of Rossville Sept. 4, died in a Topeka hospital Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The said Herbert T. Crawshaw was admitted to the hospital Sept. 4 after his truck and another truck collided head-on on US-24 at the Pottawatomie Shawnee County line. The driver of the other truck, Samuel Thompson, 52, Rossville, suffered a neck injury and was treated at Topeka hospital and later released officials said. Mr. Crawshaw was born Aug. 24, 1940, in Hoyt, and spent most of his life in the Maple Hill area. He moved to Belvue two years ago. He was employed by General Foods Corp. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 555, Topeka, and the Shawnee County Mounted Posse. He was married to Mary K. Fife on Aug 8, 1961, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Herbert T. Crawshaw Jr., and a daughter, Debra Leann Crawshaw, both at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Crawshaw, Maple Hill; four brothers, W.W. Herbert Crawshaw St. Marys – Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Verschelden Funeral Home here for Herbert T. Crawshaw, 36, Belvue, who died Thursday at a Topeka hospital. He was injured in a traffic accident on US-24 west of Rossville Sept. 4. Mr. Crawshaw was born Aug. 24, 1940, in Hoyt, and spent most of his life in the Maple Hill area. He moved to Belvue two years ago. He was employed by General Foods Corp. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 555, Topeka, and the Shawnee County Mounted Posse. He was married to Mary K. Fife on Aug. 8, 1961, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Herbert T. Crawshaw Jr., and a daughter, Debra LeAnn Crawshaw, both at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Crawshaw, 36 driver of a 1969 Ford pick-up truck and Sam Thompson, 53, Rossville, driver of a 1958 International truck late Saturday evening, Sept 4, on U.S. Highway 24 east of St. Marys near the Pottawatomie County – Shawnee County Line. Crawshaw was westbound and Thompson was eastbound when the accident occurred. Both men were taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital where officials indicated Sunday that Crawshaw was considered in critical condition. He suffered multiple cuts and internal injuries and underwent surgery Sunday morning. Thompson was admitted with a neck injury. Hospital officials described his condition as satisfactory. The Kansas Highway Patrol worked the accident, but would reveal no information as to who was at fault. | |

She was graduated from Kaw Valley Vocational-Technical School in Topeka and was a licensed practical nurse in 1968. She earned a degree as a registered nurse from Barton County Community College in Great Bend in 1988 and was employed in the coronary care unit at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka and by the Home Health Department. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She was a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital, Home Health Care, and Meals on Wheels. She was married to Robert Crawshaw. They were divorced. Survivors include sons, James R. Crawshaw and Christopher J. Crawshaw, both in Topeka; brothers, Mike Ronsse, Gardner, and David Ronsse, St. Marys; sisters, Kate Brehm and Maggi Ronsse, both in Topeka; and two grandchildren. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean War where he received the Purple Heart. Jack was employed by the Santa Fe Railway for over 43 years before retiring. She was born June 22, 1900 at Valley Falls, the daughter of Louis A. and Myrtle Fletcher Newman. She grew up in the Boyle community. In 1918 she went to work for Dr. Joe Cowherd in Kansas City, MO, caring for newborns and children under his care. Her work took her to St. Louis, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Joplin and Ponca City to deliver children to doctors who were specialists in their field. She worked in Kansas City until 1944, when she returned to Valley Falls to help care for her ailing parents until they died. She then worked part-time in Kansas City, MO until August 1987, when she moved to Rossville to be near her ailing sister. She was member of the First Christian Church, Valley Falls, Ladies Aid, and the Christian Women’s Fellowship and assisted in repairing and cleaning things to sell in the Thrift Shop. She was a charter member of the Valley Falls Historical Society. She married William R. Cromwell on January 29, 1929 at the Country Club Christian Church, Independence, MO. He died on March 11, 1935 in Kansas City, MO. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Murl and Mildred Irvin, and three brothers, Lee Newman, Harry Newman, and Neil Newman. The only immediate survivor is a brother, Ernest Newman, LaVergne, TN. Mrs. Cromwell was cremated. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Born in Erie County, Pennsylvania March 12, 1856, she came to Kansas in March, 1879, and settled at Dover. Two years later she moved with her husband, Marion W. Crow, to the West Union neighborhood, where they lived until 15 years ago. They lived in Rossville until August 20, 1934, when she moved to Topeka to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Long, following the death of her husband. She united with the Methodist church when a girl and was a consistent worker in the church all her life. She was a member of the Rossville M. E. church at the time of her death. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Long, Topeka; three sons, L. B. Crow, Rossville; C. W. Crow, Silver Lake; and M. L. Crow, Willard; a sister, Mrs. E. O. Bigelow, Waterford, PA.; a brother, B. W. Baird, Manhattan; and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the West Union church, conducted by Rev. Wright Horton. Mrs. Lola G. Crow OSAGE CITY – Mrs. Lola G. Crow, 86, formerly of 5000 Huntoon, Topeka, died late Friday, Feb. 17, at an Osage City nursing home. Mrs. Crow worked at the Kansas Motor Vehicle Department in Topeka for several years after her husband died. She also had taught school for several years. She was born Nov. 3, 1897, in a sod house near Agra in Phillips County, the daughter of Samuel L. and Mary Mae Blankenship Schiesser. She moved to Keene at an early age and was graduated from Maple Hill High School, then attended Emporia State Teachers College. She spent most of her life in the Willard community. Mrs. Crow was a member of First Christian Church in Topeka and a former member of West Union Ladies Aid at Willard. She was married to Marion Lawrence Crow March 16, 1922, at Topeka. He died Aug 14, 1953. An infant son, Marvin Eugene Crow, died Aug. 16, 1924. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Norma Hobson, Atlantic, Iowa; a son, Calvin Crow, Osage City; a sister, Mrs. Frances McKown, Topeka; five brothers, Glenn Schiesser and Dean Schiesser, both of Topeka, Ray Schiesser, Eskridge, Ike Schiesser, Keene, and Marvin Schiesser, Visalia, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. | 4841 |  | Obituary- Crow, Marion Marion William ‘Bill’ Crow DOVER — Marion William "Bill" Crow, 72, Dover, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Crow was a farmer. He was born July 21, 1924, near Dover, the son of Cary W. and Eunice Vivian Warner Crow. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1941. Mr. Crow was a member of the Dover Federated Church and a former member of the Shawnee County Farm Bureau, Do¬ver Grange and the I.O.O.F. of Dover. He married Joan Fritz in 1973. They were divorced. Survivors include two sons. Cary Norman Crow and Jimmy Dean Crow, both of Maple Hill; three sisters, Ruth Banka, Dover, Ada Miller, Columbus, Ohio, and Mildred Page, Rossville; and three brothers, Neil Crow, Dover, Byron Crow, Topeka, and Alvin Crow, Maple Hill. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Dover Federated Church. Burial will be in Dover Cemetery. He will lie in state from 2 until 8 p.m. today at the Crable Funeral Chapel in Eskridge, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight. Vivian was born July 15, 1925, in Broken Bow, Nebraska, to Robert Thorpe and Sarah Edmunds Thorpe. Vivian completed high school in Broken Bow, nurse training in North Platte and started working as an RN. She married George Crowl Jr. in 1948 and the two continued their careers in Kansas City and retired in Topeka. Vivian is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert, sister Naomi and husband George. She is survived by her son Stephen (Lynda) Crowl, grandson Spencer Crowl (Austin, Tx) and granddaughter Ashlee Crowl (Kansas City). MOLLIE CRUM DEAD The people of Rossville were shocked at the announcement of the sudden death of Mrs. Mollie Crum nee Dennis, at her home near North Topeka last Saturday morning. She had retired Friday night in the best of health and spirits. Saturday morning she arose and dressed herself but complained of a faintness. Her husband assisted her to the door in order that she might breathe the fresh air but she sank and expired in his arms before assistance could be summoned. Mrs. Drum was for a long time a resident of this city. Her first husband, Ben Dennis, died about two years ago from the effects of an accident while working on a building in North Topeka. Mrs. Dennis was married to Mr. E. G. Crum of Topeka last fall. The body was shipped to Rossville last Monday accompanied by a large number of sympathizing friends. A short service was conducted by Rev. Nelson of the Presbyterian Church after which interment took place in the city cemetery. | |

He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Nowata, Okla., the son of Willis P. and Elizabeth Parker Crupper. He spent his early life in Oklahoma before he moved to Dearing in Montgomery County. He lived in the Ross¬ville community many years. He worked for the Gas Service Co., in Topeka 22 years before he retired in 1982. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific where he was a prisoner of the Japanese. He was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He was married to Virginia Kovar March 4, 1950, in Bentonville, Ark. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Charles G. Crupper Jr., Papillion, Neb.; four brothers, Arthur L. Crupper, Howard, Roy Neil Crupper, Portland, Ore., Joseph P. Crupper, Alexandria, Va., and Edward W. Crupper, Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Ramona B. Wierima, Vacolt, Wash.; a grandson and a granddaughter. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. | 4849 |  | Obituary- Cullen, John JOHN JOSEPH CULLEN John Joseph Cullen, 43, a former resident of Rossville died July 20 at Needles, Calif., after he was stricken with a heart attack. A resident of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Mr. Cullen was on his return home from a trip into Oregon when he died. He was born November 12, 1911, in Junction City. A veteran of World War II, he served three years in Japan and Korea. He was a shoe maker by trade. He is survived by his wife, Eve Cullen of the home; four daughters, Carol Sue, Nancy Jean and Sarah Jane, all of the home; and Mrs. Jack McDermott, Wichita; and a sister, Mrs. Anne Holz of St. Marys. She was born July 18, 1940 in Topeka the daughter of Oscar H. and Charlotte A. Hurla Bixby. She graduated from Rossville High School and lived in the Rossville community many years before moving to St. Marys. She had worked at the Rossville Valley Manor several years. Betty was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church while living in Rossville. She was an amateur radio operator (NNVW). Betty made many wonderful friends while living at St. Marys Manor. On November 26, 1960 she was united in marriage to Eric H. Hinterweger at Rossville. He died December 15, 1998. She later married Leonard L. Cummings on October 21, 2000 in St. Marys. He died March 6, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son, Danny Hinterweger on August 16, 2016. Survivors include two sons, Jim (Jan) Hinterweger, Lebo and Mike (Lisa) Hinterweger, Overbrook; step sons, Bob (Kathy) Cummings, Belvue, Tim Cummings, Wamego and Mike (Melissa) Cummings in Florida; her daughter, Cindy (Kasey) Priddy, Silver Lake; step daughters, Lorye (Charlie) Armstrong, Wamego and Lisa (Aaron) Lyman, Topeka; sisters, Teresa Miller, Genevieve Jenssen and Patricia Bixby all of Rossville, 21 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Betty will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until the rosary at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Piper Funeral Home.
