He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Michel, Walla Walla, Wash., and Mrs. Lula Steele, Berryton; two brothers, August, of Silver Lake, and Theodore of Rossville, two nieces and three nephews. | |
| 5252 |  | Obituary- Dolezilek, Joseph Joseph Dolezilek dies at 95 POPLAR—Funeral services were held January 26 at Our Lady of Tourds Catholic Church for Joseph Dolezilek, 95, who died January 22, 1960, in Poplar City Hospital. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Patrick Ryan. Interment was in the Poplar City Cemetery. Mr. Dolezilek was born in Brusperk, Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States with his parents in 1880, settling in Rossville, Kansas, where he married Rose Matyak in 1892. Mrs. Dolezilek died in 1908. In 1917 he moved to Elsberry, Mo., and then to North Dakota for a year. In 1926 he moved to Montana. He lived on a farm ten miles north of Poplar until December 1958 when he went to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hibl. Surviving are four sons, Charles. Peter, and James of Poplar, and Joseph Jr. of Frazer; two daughters, Mrs. Nicholas Girard, Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Adolph Hibl, Poplar; one brother, Anton Dolezilek of St. Marys, Kansas, several nieces and nephews in Topeka and Rossville, Kansas. His oldest daughter, Mary, died January 20, 1959, in Portland, Oregon. | |
| 5253 |  | Obituary- Dolezilek, Marie Marie Dolezilek Marie H. Dolezilek, 92, Rossville, died Saturday, February 8, 2003, at a Rossville nursing home. She was born June 9, 1910, in St. Marys, the daughter of Maurice and Marie Richstatter Graf. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in 1928 and from St. Francis Hospital Nurses Training in 1931. Mrs. Dolezilek and her husband farmed in the Rossville and Silver Lake areas for many years. Mrs. Dolezilek was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and the Altar Society at the church, both in Rossville. January 20, 1936, she married T.L. "Ted" Dolezilek in St. Marys. He died September 3, 1989. A Grandson, Michael A. Anderson died May 9, 1987. Survivors include two daughters, Mary K. Funke, Washington, and Joan M. Anderson, Rossville; a sister Margaret Hoferer, St. Marys; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery. A rosy will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday (this evening) at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, 714 Maple, St. Marys, 66536. Dolezilek, 92, Rossville, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at a Rossville nursing home. Mrs. Dolezilek and her husband farmed in the Rossville and Silver Lake area for many years. | 5254 |  | Obituary- Dolezilek, Mary MRS. FRANK DOLEZILEK Mary Mynar was born in Prlov, Moravia, on Nov. 1, 1863. She departed from this world Dec. 24, 1939 at the age of 76 years, one month, and 24 days. She migrated to America in 1890 coming straight to Rossville and has spent 50 years in the same community. She was united in marriage to Frank Dolezilek, Feb. 1, 1892. To this union seven children were born. Her eldest child, an infant son, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, five daughters and one son, and 17 grand children: Frank Dolezilek of the home; Mrs. May Matyak, Rossville; Mrs, Frances Koci, Elmont; Mrs. Antonie Tibbs, Topeka; Mrs. Anna Strimple, Rossville; Mrs. Lydia Dolezilek, St. Marys and one sister in Europe; Mrs. Tressie Stalmach, age 83. Mrs. Dolezilek lived and raised her family on the same farm to which she and her husband moved as soon as they were married. She has been an invalid for more than 25 years—a total invalid for 8 years. She has always been happy looking at the bright side of life. She found plenty of time between her aches and pains to talk and smile with her friends and relatives A lover of children she enjoyed her family very much. She has been a faithful wife and a wonderful mother. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Czech Presbyterian church near Delia, with Rev. Bruce Davis officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Ruth Hesse and Mrs. Mildred Berry with Miss Lulu Rachel Dannefer at the piano. Fall bearers were grandsons and nephews including, Joe Matyak, Albert Hromoda, Frank Matyak John Kratina, Paul Matyak and Frank Koci. Burial in Czech cemetery. She gave birth to a child Sunday and her death was due to complications arising therefrom. The child lived only a short time. He was born April 7, 1902, at Rossville, the son of Anthony and Albina Halda Dolezilek. Mr. Dolezilek was a member of the Catholic Church of the Assumption. He married Ann O’Donnell Sept. 5, 1927, at Kimeo. The couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Roberta Frost, Columbus, Ohio, and Betty Holmes, Topeka; two sisters, Gabriella O’Donnell, San Francisco, Calif., and Blanche Allen, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Catholic Church of the Assumption. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Dolezilek was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. He was married to Marie H. Graf Jan. 20, 1936, in St. Marys. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary K. Funke, Washington, and Mrs. Joan Anderson, Rossville; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Steele, Berryton, and Mrs. Agnes Michel, Walla Walla, Wash.; and two granddaughters. She was born November 16, 1928 at Rossville, the daughter of Charles and Sadie Viola Stum Baird. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1946. Mrs. Dolezilek lived all of her life in the Rossville community except for a few years she lived in Topeka. Billee worked for the State of Kansas, and later for Volume Shoe Corporation in Topeka. She was an active member of the Rossville High School Alumni Assoc. On June 18, 1949 she was united in Marriage to George D. Dolezilek in Topeka. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her 7 siblings and a grandson, Charles Bryson Dolezilek. Survivors include three sons, Donald (Jan) Dolezilek, Dover, Charles (Vicki) Dolezilek, Aurora, CO., and Gerry (Nancy) Dolezilek, Kenai, AK; her daughter, Ann Dolezilek, Littleton, CO.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He graduated from Royal Valley High School in 1983. | 5264 |  | Obituary- Doty, Earl Earl E. Doty Earl E. Doty, 81, Topeka, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1993, at a Topeka nursing home. Mr. Doty was head of maintenance for 40 years at Thompson Dehydrating before he retired in 1976. He previously farmed in the Rossville area from 1932 to 1942. He was born Aug. 3, 1912, on a farm near Wamego, the son of Henry and Ethel Lee Edwards Doty. He moved to Rossville in 1932. Mr. Doty was a member and elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and a member and past president of East Topeka Senior Citizens Group No. 2. He was married to Margaret Reser Jan. 30, 1934, at Rossville. She died July 13, 1975. His second wife, Mrs. Edna M. Erwin Doty, survives. A daughter, Margaret Ann Doty, died in October 1965. Other survivors include four daughters, Beverly Enyart, Shell Knob, Mo., Earleen Constantino, Beach Park, Ill., and Betty Jo Slater and Monte Kay Prentiss, both of Topeka; six sons, James Williams Doty, Larry Doty, Robert Doty and Rodney L. Doty, all of Topeka, Gary Doty, St. Marys, and Donald Doty, Tecumseh; three stepdaughters, Elsie Flynn and Lois Taylor, both of Perry, and Georgia Myers, Raymore, Mo.; two stepsons, Leon Erwin, Topeka and Flynn Erwin, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Genevieve Marie Doty-Beseau, Topeka; 27 grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Cremation is planned to follow services and inurnment is pending. Mr. Doty will lie in state after noon today at the funeral home where family and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday. | 5265 |  | Obituary- Doty, James James Doty James Doty, 77, of Topeka passed away peacefully on April 3, 2016. He was born December 13,1938 at Rossville, the son of Earl and Margaret Reser Doty. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1957. He served in the Kansas National Guard. Jim worked at Jostens for 33 years before retiring. He had attended Faith Assembly of God Church, where he was baptized. He loved to fish, tell jokes, garden, watch Hee Haw and read the Farmer’s Almanac voraciously. He also enjoyed listening to old gospel music and country music. Most y importantly, he loved his family and they loved him. Jim married the love of his life, Mary Figgins, in June of 1961. Survivors include his wife, Mary Doty of Topeka; daughters, Teena Reavis (Robert) of Burlington; Tammy Doty of Sacramento; grandchildren, Jamey and Mary Beth; great-grandchildren, Caden, Cora, and Enoch and several step-grandchildren; siblings Earlene, Larry, Gary, Donald, Rodney, and Monte Kay. He was preceded in death by siblings Beverly, Margaret “Peggy Ann”, Robert, and Betty Jo. Memorial services will be held at Davidson Funeral Home on Monday, April 11,2016 at 10:00 am. He was born November 21,1941, in Rossville, Kansas the fifth child of Earl Edward and Margaret Hazel Doty. Larry graduated from Highland Park High School where he met his soul mate Iona “Jean” Millard, and they married in 1960. High school sweethearts, Larry and Jean were inseparable and shared 56 years of life’s wonders together. Larry was self-employed with a family business he ran with his wife. Larry was a man who enjoyed the he simple beauty in every day life. Feeding and watching birds, gardening with Jean, and conversation were just a few of his life’s pleasures. Larry knew no stranger, and if there were music he’d be the first to dance. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and attending his grandchildrens’ sports and music events, but above all he lived to share each day with his wife Jean. He is proceeded in death by his parents, his siblings Bev Enyart, James Doty, Peggy Doty, Bob Doty, and Betty Jo Slater. He is survived by his wife Iona “Jean” his siblings, Earlene Constantino, Gary Doty, Donnie Doty, Rodney Doty, and Monte Kay Prentiss; his children Becky (Don) Hill, Carrie (Ron) Ward, Rusty (Annelise) Doty, Randy Doty, and Lori (Dan) Miller; his grandchildren Jeremy (Amy) Conway, Amanda (Chris) Fisher, Courtney (Chris) Doud, Jordan (Sierra) Doty, Taryn (Ben) Gervais, Austin (Sidney Franzke) Doty, Tanner (Sam Garcia) Doty, Andrew (Morgan Simmons) Miller, and Sam Miller; three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Doty was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, where she served as eucharistic minister, P.T.O. secretary and altar boy supervisor. She was married to Robert Doty Jan. 27, 1968, in Lisbon, Maine. He survives. Bob was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 26, 1944 the son of Earl Edward and Margaret Hazel (Reser) Doty. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as a Ground Safety Crewman from 1964 to 1968 and in the Reserves until November 20, 1970. Bob owned Doty Upholstery until 1993 and a few years later owned and operated TAFCO Upholstery. He enjoyed blues music, traveling and especially his grandchildren. Bob was a member of American Legion Post #400, St. Matthew Catholic Church and was an active volunteer for the Topeka catholic churches helping with their needs especially in the upholstery field. He married Lillian M. DAuteuil in Lisbon, Maine on January 27, 1968. She preceded him in death on October 13, 1992. He married Roberta (King) Perron in Topeka, Kansas on May 9, 2003, she survives of the home. He was born February 16, 1960 in Bell County, Texas, the son of Joseph William and Gwendolyn May (Ford) Doucet. Mitchell attended St. George High School in St. George, Kansas. He owned and operated Mitchell’s Garage in Rossville for many years where he will be missed as an honest vehicle caretaker. Mitchell married Kim on September 6, 2003 in Rossville. She survives. | 5272 |  | Obituary- Doud, Bernard Bernard Edward Doud Bernard Edward Doud was born in Rossville, KS. Aug. 24, 1898, lost his life Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1922, aged 24 years and 5 days. Eddie, as he was known to all his friends in the community, was educated in the Rossville schools, completing the high school course with the class of 1918. He was unusually ambitious to grow mentally and anxious to prosper and early developed the habit of thrift. In his effort to have steady employment he had spent much of the time since his graduation in railroad work away from Rossville. Soon after returning from a year's stay in the northwest, eh secured work with the Santa Fe Railroad Co., and it was while in their employ he lost his life at Olathe, when he fell on high voltage wires of the Olathe Power CO. His father, Eventus Doud, died a number of years ago, his death due to old injuries received in the Civil war. His brother Eventus Doud lost his life in the line of duty in the fighting in the Argonne Forest in France. Eddie was ready to take his brother's place and upon becoming twenty-one in 1918 had received orders to report for duty when the order was countermanded at the signing of the armistice. He was a member of the S.B.A. and Woodman lodges of Rossville. His untimely end is mourned by a host of friends and his mother, to whom he was unusually devoted and his dutiful attention to her at all times will forever be a comfort and cherished memory to her. One sister Mrs. P.R. Felker of Corvallis, Mont., also survives. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 2, in the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. H. L. Nelson, of Topeka, and interment made in the family lot in Rossville cemetery. Edward Doud Killed By Electrocution Bernard Edward Doud, aged 22, son of Mrs. Rose Doud of this city, was killed Monday afternoon between four and five o'clock, at Olathe when he fell across three high voltage wires of the Olathe Light and Power Co. The tragedy occurred within the city limits and hundreds of people looked on while the charred body was removed from across the wires. Members of the fire department used chemicals to extinguish the flames which enveloped Doud's body. Mr. Doud was employed as lineman for the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe wires and those of the Olathe light plant run on the same pole, the former's above. Mr. Doud, who was working alone at the time the tragedy occurred, slipped and fell across the wires from a cross arm on which he stood doing repair work. The body was brought to Rossville last night, in charge of Levi Marion, another Rossville man employed at Olathe, and taken to the home. Mrs. Rose Doud, the mother, had gone to Missoula, Mont., about two weeks ago, to stay with her daughter, Mrs. P.R. Felker, who was preparing to move to Cornwallis, Mont., where Mr. Felker is to take charge of a school. Mrs. Doud is enroute home due to arrive here tomorrow (Friday). The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka. Interment will be made in Rossville cemetery. | |
| 5273 |  | Obituary- Doud, Eventus S. d. 1918 1 Eventus Doud Rests in Home Cemetery The remains of Eventus Doud were laid to rest in Rossville cemetery, Tuesday afternoon following a public funeral held on the high school grounds at 2 p.m. The body arrived in Rossville, Saturday at noon and was brought to the Verschelden undertaking parlor where it lay in state until the day of the funeral, with members of Rossville Post of the Legion doing guard duty. Many flowers were gathered about town Saturday afternoon by ladies and placed with the flag covered casket in the undertaking rooms. The funeral services were simple but none the less impressive. Headed by the band the procession formed on Main street with the Legion Post and visiting Legion members from St. Marys and Silver Lake marching in line behind the band and the relatives behind the veterans. The line of march was east on Perry street to Orange thence north to the school grounds. By request of the mother, no singing was arranged for the service but the band played "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee" while the casket was taken before the outdoor altar. The Rev. H. L. Nelson of Topeka, preached the sermon. At the cemetery the legion ritualistic service was read by Rev. Nelson. The body was lowered to its final resting place and the firing squad fired three rounds in its salute. Bugler Lowell Hook concluded the service with "Taps." The floral offerings were beautiful and elaborate. A beautiful wreath from the Legion Post and a floral flag from the K.L. [missing] and several other set pieces from the people of the community were among the offerings. Eventus is the third of three Rossville boys to be brought home from France, to rest in his native soil. His was the only life lost in the battle line. He was killed during the advance of the 3rd Division in the Argonne, on Oct. 10, 1918. The day following, on Oct. 11, Glen Sebring and John Bravence, two other Rossville boys in the same division, but members of Co. G. 38th Inf., were hit during the same advance. Bravence was wounded severely but Sebring was saved by the bullet flattening itself against his belt buckle. | |
| 5274 |  | Obituary- Doud, Eventus S. d.1909 E.S. Doud Dead E.S. Doud, R.F.D. Carrier route 14, one of the old and respected citizens of Rossville, died early Monday morning from heart failure. He had been complaining at times for months past but the end came without warning. For a week prior to his death, he had not felt well enough to serve his route but was up and around all the time. At 3 o'clock Monday morning a slight struggle aroused his wife at his side and she awoke to find him dying. Medical help was hurriedly called but death came within a few minutes. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the M.E. Church conducted by Rev. J.K. Miller assisted by Rev. Woestemeyer. Beautiful flowers covered the casket and a handsome floral scroll with the words, "At Rest", was presented by the K. & L. of S. lodge. The ladies of this lodge, of which Mrs. Doud is s a member, attended in a body. The church as was crowded with sympathizing friend and neighbors. The burial took place in the city cemetery. Eventus S. Doud was born in Miami County, Indiana, Jan. 22, 1848, and was 61 years old at the time of his death. At the age of 12 he moved to Kansas with his parents and has lived in and near Rossville for 40 years. He enlisted in the Union Army of the Civil War at the age of 15 years and served 2 years and 3 months received an honorable discharge. He was a member of the M.E. Church for over 30 years. In July 1885 he was married to Miss Rose Stamp. He is survived by the wife and three children, Jessie, Ven and Eddie, one brother and three sisters. One sister and a niece residing at Kiro, Kans., were present at the funeral. Mr. Doud had been a sufferer from heart trouble for a number of years and his sudden death was no surprise to his intimate friends. All of his family were present when death came. | |

Eventus was born in Rossville May 26, 1892 and at the time of his death was 26 years, 4 months and 14 days old. He was one of the first drafted men from Rossville, reaching Camp Funston Sept. 18, 1917. Other boys who were in the same call were Glen Sebring, Sam Cottle, John Bravence and Ray Lemon. The boys were placed in the 353rd infantry. In April 1918 Eventus, John Bravence and Glen Sebring were started overseas. In New Jersey they were assigned to the 3rd division. Eventus was assigned to H Co., 38th Inf., and Sebring and Bravence to G Co., 38th Inf. They had shared the same hardships until the day Eventus was killed. His death is mourned by his mother, Mrs. Rose Doud, one brother Edward, and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Felker, of Missoula, Mont., and other relatives of the community and his memory will be cherished and honored by the people of Rossville who had known him all his life. Body of Eventus Doud Home This Week A telegram from Hoboken, New Jersey came yesterday stating the remains of Private Eventus S. Doud were shipped from Hoboken, N.J. yesterday and they are expected here tomorrow. Mrs. Rose Doud and son Ed left Missoula, Mont., the 20th by auto and are expected in today or tomorrow. No announcement of the funeral arrangements can be given until the family arrives home. In the event the body arrives before the mother reaches Rossville, the remains will probably be taken to the Verschelden undertaking room until the day for the funeral is arranged. | |

He was born Sept. 10, 1909, in Topeka and spent most of his life in Topeka. He attended Topeka public schools and was graduated from Topeka High School. He attended the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas. Mr. Douglas was associated with Capital Iron Works from 1934 to 1946 when he helped establish the Douglas Construction Co. The firm built homes, public buildings, schools, power plants and roads. Mr. Douglas was a member of Faith Lutheran church and the choir at the church. He was a member of the board of directors of National Associated General Contractors and had served in 1959 as president of Kansas Associated General Contractors. He had served 12 years as president of the Topeka Chapter of Associated General Contractors. He served on the board of directors of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce in 1956. Theodosia, also known as ‘Teddy’, was born in Bigelow, KS to Rebecca and Smith Fouts. Teddy was one of 10 children and attended school in Rossville. Teddy was a life-long & devout member of Lane Chapel CME Church and spent countless hours volunteering through the church to help others. Teddy was a Licensed Medical Health Technician at the Topeka State Hospital for 40 + years – and loved helping her patients heal. Teddy was devoted to her family – especially when they were in their time of need. Whether it was cooking daily meals for her grandmother in law, or caring for and running errands for her mother-in-law, she was there without fail. Teddy’s biggest joy came from her children and grandchildren, who she spoiled with love and affection – and good home cooking. Her famous cinnamon rolls and apple pies were enjoyed by all! Teddy is survived by her husband of 69 years, Wilber Douglas Jr, and her children Wilber Douglas, III (‘Yogi’) and his wife Joyce, Rhonda Grayson, Lynnieve (‘Nieve’) Jones and her husband Grady, and Shelley Douglas Slachowitz and her husband Joel. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1963 and lived all his life in the Topeka community. Mr. Dreasher was a former partner in Dreasher’s Concrete Products, Tecumseh. He was a member of Topeka Auto Racing Boosters several years. He was married to Roxann Matyak December 6, 1975, at Rossville. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Darcy Lynette Dreasher, Tecumseh; a son, James Lee Dreasher, Tecumseh; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Dreasher ,Sr., Tecumseh; and two brothers, Wendell “Gene” Dreasher, Perry, and Orville Dreasher Jr., Tecumseh. Services were at 9 a.m. Saturday at Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka. Burial was in Rochester Cemetery. Family and friends met Friday evening at the mortuary. He was born January 18, 1937 in Jackson County, Kansas to William Cornelius Driscoll & Ola Alice Burget Driscoll of Wetmore, Kansas. He attended Wetmore Elementary followed by his graduation in 1955 from Wetmore High School as class Salutatorian behind his twin sister & Valedictorian, June Driscoll. In 1956, he voluntarily joined the Navy & reached Store Keeper, 3rd class (SK3), on the USS Macon where he served until 1959. He worked for Adam’s Business Forms as an engraver & printer for 32 years retiring in 1991. He met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Cowen, in 1963. They married on February 29, 1964 in Topeka, Kansas. The young family moved to Rossville in 1969 for the small town lifestyle. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed the birth of five children, Belinda Kathryn, Rodney Earl, Renee Ola, William Curt & Shannon Neil. While in Rossville, he was an active member of the Rossville Christian Church, the Rossville High School Booster Club, and as a Rossville Grade School volunteer. As a National Weather Service volunteer from 1972 to 2007, he recorded the amount of daily precipitation & Cross Creek water levels as needed during multiple floods. He was devoted to his family & enjoyed these hobbies: traveling to all 50 states & multiple countries, family pictures & movies, & gardening. He loved to experiment with a variety of plants — celery, peanuts, cotton, & heirloom tomatoes. She was born on December 7, 1925 in Weaubleau, MO., the daughter of Don and Agee Rees Harryman. Barbara lived near Quenemo for many years, moving to Rossville in 1987. In 2007 she moved to Topeka to Atria Hearthstone. Barbara graduated from Weaubleau High School in 1943. She worked a summer in Yellowstone National Park and then spent a year at Montana State College in Bozeman, MT. She will be remembered for her music and her portrayal of Susanna Wesley that she provided for many church groups. Barbara also played piano and performed at the Vassar Playhouse. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Pomona and the D.A.R. in Ottawa. On April 4, 1958, Barbara was married to Joe Driver in Quenemo. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her eight siblings, Eugene, Irene, Vivian, Rees, W.D., Anna May, Kathryn and Don. Barbara is survived by her husband, Joe of the home; brothers-in-law, Jim (Betty) Driver, Don (Dorothy) Driver and Howard (Jeanne) Driver; sisters-in-law, Katie Harryman, Peggy (Bob) Friesen, Veda (Bruce) Rogers, Ruth Driver and Jessie Driver; many nieces and nephews.
