| 7251 |  | Obituary- Lasswell, Roy 2 Roy F. Lasswell Roy F. Lasswell, 100, St. Marys, died Wednesday, May 23, 1990, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Lasswell farmed north of Emmett 45 years before he retired in 1957 and moved into St. Marys. He was born December 12, 1889, north of St. Clere in Jackson County, the son of Harvey A. and Mary Graham Lasswell. He attended Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan when Anderson Hall was the only building on the campus. He later was graduated from a Salina business college. Mr. Lasswell was a member of the former Masonic lodge in Emmett. He served many years on the board of Grandview Grade School north of Emmett. He was married to Agnes Rezac December 25, 1911, in Topeka. She died May 20, 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Irene Davis, Rossville, and Lottie Lucas, Topeka; two half sisters, Bessie Lunger, Summerfield, and Beatrice Pine, Manhattan; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial was in St. Clere Cemetery. | 7252 |  | Obituary- Lauber, Steven Steven W. Lauber Steven W. Lauber, 53, of Topeka, walked into the sunlight of Heaven on Thursday morning, May 17, 2012 at the Rossville Health Care Center. He was born May 21, 1958 at Franklin, NE the son of Kenneth E. Lauber, Sr. and Darlene Melton Lauber. He attended Highland Park South, Eisenhower Junior High and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1978. Steve worked at Meier's Market on Silver Lake Road during High School and later for Walmart. He was a former member of Lakeview Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include his mother, Darlene Lauber of Topeka; his brother and sister in law, Kenneth Jr. and Carrie Lauber, of Topeka; and great-niece, Alexis Lauber of Topeka; nephew Jared Lauber and his wife Jennifer of Topeka; aunts and uncles, Floyd and Nadine Lauber of Silverton, Oregon, Rev. Duane and Lita Lauber of North Platte, NE and numerous cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Lauber and grandparents, Hobert and Lula Melton and Fred and Mary Lauber. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, May 21 at Davidson Funeral Home. Mr. Lauber will lie in state at Davidson Funeral Home from 1-8 Sunday where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 Sunday evening. | 7255 |  | Obituary- Lauck, Isaac Isaac Streight Lauck IV ROSSVILLE – Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Rossville for Isaac Streight Lauck IV, 81, Woodland, Calif. He died May 17, 1990, at a Woodland hospital. Mr. Lauck was an office manager 33 years for Safeco Insurance Co., mostly in the San Francisco Bay area, before he retired in 1970. He was born May 8, 1909, in Topeka, the son of Isaac Streight Lauck III and Louise Lauck. He was graduated from Rossville High School and Washburn University in Topeka. He also was graduated from Leland Stanford Jr. Graduate School of Business at Palo Alto, Calif. Mr. Lauck was a member of Blue Lakes Masonic Lodge at San Bruno, Calif. He was married to Beth Stalker Aug 14, 1937, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Richard Abbott Lauck, Eureka, Calif., and John Elliott Lauck, Fairfield, Calif.; a sister, Virginia Louise Johnson, Bartlesville, Okla.; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters. Mr. Lauck was cremated. Inurnment will be in Delia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Lauck IV Isaac Streight Lauck IV, 81, died Thursday, May 17, 1990, in Woodland Memorial Hospital, Woodland, Calif. He was a native of Topeka. Mr. Lauck graduated from Rossville High School, Washburn University in Topeka, and the Leland Stanford Graduate School of Business, Palo Alto, Calif. He worked for Safeco Insurance Company in office management for 33 years, spending most of his working life in the San Francisco Bay area. He retired to Woodland in 1970. He was a member of Blue Lakes Masonic Lodge, San Bruno, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Beth (Stalker) Lauck, Woodland, Calif.; two sons, Richard Abbott Lauck and his wife, Beverly, Eureka, Calif., and John Elliott Lauck and his wife, Elaine, Fairfield, Calif.; one sister, Virginia Louise Johnson and her husband Lathel M., Bartlesville, Okla.; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rossville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Kallous officiating. Burial will be in the Delia Cemetery. She was born March 25,1935, on the family farm in rural Westmoreland, KS, the daughter of Peter E. and Edith L. (McProud) Macht. She was a 1952 graduate of Wamego Rural High School. She attended Washburn University, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. Jo had been employed by Edward Jones in Lawrence since 1986. Jo married Richard M. Lauffer on February 5,1955, in Wamego, KS. He preceded her in death on August 6, 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Kim Lauffer, Topeka, and Carol Lauffer, Rossville, KS; and two grandchildren, Casey O’Brien and Kelli O’Brien. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kimber Macht. Mrs. Lauffer was cremated. She was born July 26,1925 on a farm north of Grove, Kansas, the daughter of James F. and Frances J. (Dolezilek) Koci. She graduated from Silver Lake High School, coming to Topeka after graduating. She worked at the 832 Supply Depot for 3 years during WWII. She met her husband, Ernest J. Laurenti in 1945 and they married on April 19, 1947 in Topeka. She worked at Crosby Brothers Appliance Center for 3 years. She was a homemaker for 16 years and then worked for the State of Kansas for 17 years before retiring in 1985. Survivors include her husband, Ernest of 63 years of Topeka; two sons, James L. (Donna) Laurenti of Bellevue, NE and Anthony M. (Brenda) Laurenti of Topeka; a daughter, Lisa (Richard) McCracken; four grandchildren, Joane, Julia, Laney and Kevin; and four great-grandchildren, Halia, Olivia, Cole, and Remi. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Lillian and Irene and her brother, Frank and a granddaughter, Gina. She loved dancing to the Big Bands and Polka, sewing and designing her own dresses and formal gowns for many years. Her children and grandchildren were very dear to her. He was born December 2, 1959 in Enid, OK, the son of Dwight Jimmy and Gilda Verl (Gilbert) Lavin. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne. He was a graduate of University of Texas at Dallas. John was a Senior English Teacher at Ford High School in Quinlan, TX. He then retired to Willard, Kansas with his wife Cynthia Miller of 25 years. Survivors include daughter, Tianna (Rashid) Spencer, two grandchildren, Noah and Marlee Spencer; daughters, Tonya and Tishelle Miller from a previous marriage; his mother, Gilda Lavin; sisters, Olive (Mark) Wilson, Sylvia (Tim) Franz, and Debi Cropp; nieces, Jasmine and Megan Wilson and Tiffany McLeroy; nephews, Sheldon and Denton Howell and Joshua Wilson. He was preceded in death by his father, Dwight Lavin. Honoring his request, cremation is planned. | 7261 |  | Obituary- Lawrence, Jeremiah J.V. Lawrence The body of Jeremiah V. Lawrence widely known farmer, living four miles northeast of Rossville, was found lying in the road two miles east of his home shortly after 9 o'clock last Friday. His farm team hitched to a lumber wagon, was standing patiently where they had stopped when he either fell from the seat of his wagon or started to climb down to the road. Death apparently was due to heart disease, according to Dr. H.L. Clark coroner, who was called when the body was found by Jim Spears as he drove along the road and found the team standing almost beside the body of the dead driver. Mr. Lawrence had helped load a large chicken coop on his wagon at a farm half mile west of the place where death occurred. He was hauling the chicken coop to his daughter's farm near Silver Lake. Apparently he had a heart attack and fell from the wagon. Mr. Lawrence was born near Hartzville, Indiana, Sept. 7, 1854. At the date of his death he was 79 years and 29 days old. He was brought to Kansas by his parents and grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Joseph K. Lawrence, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Epperson, in the spring of 1855. The family settled near Big Springs helping to form the First United Brethren church in the state. His father died when he was 12 years old leaving "Jerry" to help his mother raise the younger children. He united with the church in his young manhood, continuing until his death. On Sept. 1, 1881, he was married to Maud L. Lewis at Topeka, who preceded him in death thirty-six years ago. To this union three children were born: Mrs. Ellen Thomas of Topeka, Ks.; H.O. Lawrence of Topeka, and Mrs. Pearl Meek of Holton. He was married to Miss Anna Gibeson of Holton On Dec. 21, 1899. Three children were born to this union: Mrs. Esther Wolf of Silver Lake, Roscoe of the home address and Miss Lois Lawrence of Topeka. Besides the six children mentioned, Mr. Lawrence is survived by three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Maggie Stone of Arkansas, Mrs. Jennie Bardwell of Wichita, Cora Jones of Ozawkie and Joe Lawrence of Washington; seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also leaves a host of friends to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held from the Rossville Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. Horton assisted by Rev. Kregg of Topeka and J.B. Carr of Manhattan. Music was furnished by Miss Sanders, Mrs. Ruth Hess, Lorene Parr and Miss Kathleen Godfrey. Miss Lucille Griswold piano. He also worked for Senne Con-struction Co. in Topeka and was a custodian and bus driver for Williamstown Grade School for 19 years before he retired in 1974. He was born April 5, 1904, at Holton, the son of Jerimiah and Anna Gibeson Lawrence. He lived in Rossville and Topeka before he moved to Williamstown in 1951. Mr. Lawrence was a member and deacon of Perry Christian Church. He also was a member of the Underwood Cemetery Board many years. He was married to Ruby McConnell March 4, 1933, at Rossville. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Watson, 4415 N.W. Mission, Topeka; a son, Jim Lawrence, Williamstown; a sister, Mrs. Esther Wolf, Carbondale; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Perry Christian Church. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery, Williamstown. She was born on October 31, 1916 in Auburn, the daughter of Alfred and Rosie Kovar Koci. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1934. She was an avid Royals and KU bas-ketball fan. Viola married Ivan Beach on June 1, 1940 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on December 4, 1962. Viola married Russell Layman on June 17, 1969. He preceded her in death on November 6, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Richard, Irvin and Clyde Koci and one sister, Gladys Smith. Survivors include one son, Galen Beach of Leslie, MO, one daughter, Debra Beach of Topeka, three grandsons, Shawn, Patrick and Steven Beach, one great-grandson, Conrad Beach and one sister, Nina Wehner of Eudora. Graveside services will be held at Noon Friday at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. | 7265 |  | Obituary- Layne, Jack 1 Jack William Layne Jack William Layne, 42, Rossville, died Monday, Oct. 28, at a Topeka hospital emergency room. He had a heart ailment. Mr. Layne served in the Army from 1962 until he retired in 1983. His service included three years in Vietnam. Since his retirement he had been assistant ranch supervisor for McAnally Enterprises at Maple Hill. He was born July 13, 1943, at Chattaroy, W.Va. During his time in the Army he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver and two bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Good Conduct Medal and Army Service Ribbon. He was married to Marilyn S. Cunningham May 22, 1970, at Salina. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, David William Layne and Jack Damon Layne, both at home; his stepfather and mother, Steven and Beulah Kondwros, Clarksville, Tenn.; a brother, Jesse David Layne, Clarksville, Tenn.; and a sister, Coleen Bumpus, Clarksville, Tenn. He passed away at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center Emergency Room Monday morning, Oct. 28, 1985. Mr. Layne served in the Army in 1962 in West Virginia, and was discharged in 1983 at Fort Riley due to a heart disability. Two of the years in service were in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with on silver and two bronze starts. He also received a Vietnam campaign medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm and a good conduct medal and Army Service Ribbon. Mrs. Layne was an accounting clerk for Falley's Food 4 Less. She was born March 17, 1949, in Topeka, the daughter of David William and Anna Elizabeth Stehlin Cunningham. She attended Salina High School and was graduated from Topeka Technical College. She lived in Rossville before she moved to Maple Hill seven years ago. She married Jack William Layne on May 22, 1970, at Salina. He died Oct. 28, 1985. Survivors include two sons, David W. Layne and Jack D. Layne, both of Maple Hill; a sister, Anna L. Cunningham, Maple Hill; and two brothers, Joseph Cunningham, Valley Falls, and Richard Cunningham, Topeka. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. She lived in Maple Hill the past seven years and had previously lived in the Rossville community. She attended Salina High School and graduated from Topeka Technical College. LeBlanc 80, was killed, Friday, July 15, 2011 in a farm accident on the farm he lived on most of his life doing what he loved to do. He was born January 13,1931 at St. Marys, the son of Wm. & Lucille Longtin LeBlanc. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1948. Bill enlisted with the 174th MP unit of the St. Marys National Guard in 1948 and was activated to Ft. Sheridan, IL. He concluded his enlistment with the National Guard in 1962 as a 2nd Lt. Mr. LeBlanc was employed by John Hardman Lumber Company, St. Marys, Kaw Lumber Company, and Whelan's Lumber Company both in Topeka, from 1951 to 1969. He retired from Payless Lumber Company in 1994 with 25 years of service. He owned and operated a cattle operation for many years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and Knights of Columbus Council No 657 at the church. He had been a past member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He was preceded in death by two children, Renee LeBlanc, April 18,1975 and Rex (Peggy) LeBlanc, Nov. 21,1995. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lila Frommelt, in 2003 and a brother, Francis "Mick" LeBlanc, in 2010. | 7269 |  | Obituary- LeBlanc, William 2 William E. LeBlanc Wm. E. LeBlanc, 80, July 15, 2011. He was killed in a farm accident on the farm he lived on most of his life doing what he loved to do. He was born Jan. 13, 1931, at St. Marys, the son of William and Lucille Longtin LeBlanc. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1948. Bill enlisted with the 174th MP unit of the St. Marys National Guard in 1948 and was activated to Fort Sheridan, III. He concluded his enlistment with the National Guard in 1962 as a second lieutenant. Mr. LeBlanc was employed by John Hardman Lumber Co., St. Marys, and Kaw Lumber Co., and Whelan’s Lumber Co., both in Topeka, from 1951 to 1969. He retired from Payless Lumber Company in 1994 with 25 years of service. He owned and operated a cattle operation for many years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and Knights of Columbus Council 657 at the church. He had been a past member of Jimmie Lillard Post 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He was preceded in death by two children, Renee Leblanc, April 18,1975, and Rex LeBlanc, Nov. 21, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lila Frommelt in 2003 and a brother, Francis “Mick” LeBlanc in 2010. He was united in marriage to Nadine Heder at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma on Feb. 14, 1953. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, William J. Her home was with a daughter, Mrs. Elsa Holder, 919 Winfield, Topeka. She was born Sept. 9, 1867, at Aurora, Ind., and came to Kansas when a small child with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. James Kinnett and settled near Westmoreland, where she grew to womanhood. At the age of 23 years she was united in marriage to Franklin W. Lee, Oct. 8, 1890. To this union eight children were born, three dying in infancy, and her husband preceded her in death. At the time of his death they were living on a farm near Havensville, Kan. Since 1927 she had been a resident of Topeka. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Capitola Rebekah Lodge No. 219. | 7276 |  | Obituary- Leech, Caroline Obituary Mrs. Caroline Leech, mother of Will Attebury, died at home of her daughter Mrs. Mindoz at Oceola, Apr. 26, 1909. The body was brought to Rossville Tuesday evening and was taken to the old homestead south of town when on the following day funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka. The interment took place in city cemetery. Caroline Anderson was born at Astoria, Ill. July 31, 1842, and was married to Thomas Attebury Aug. 13, 1857. To this union seven children were born, two of whom preceded her to the unknown world - one dying in infancy and the other, Fred passing away Sept. 5, 1901. She was a life long member of the Methodist church, uniting with that organization when but a child. Hers was a strong christian character and her grace was bright to the last and died rejoicing in the Savior's love. She came to Rossville with her husband in 1877 and settled on the farm now owned by Wm. Attebury. After the death of her husband she married Mr. Leech of Thayer, Kans. where they were living, when she was stricken with the last illness. A large number of the old time neighbors and friends gathered at the old home for the funeral service Wednesday afternoon to pay a last tribute of respect to the dead. | |

He was born April 17, 1921, at Langley, Ks., moving to Maple Hill with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Leeper, in 1928, where he spent his grade and high school years. He moved to the Great Bend area to work in the oil fields as a truck driver. He served in World War II as Staff Sergeant and was commissioned Permanent Personnel Officer at Ft. Leavenworth, later joining the Army Medics serving within the States. He served as Post Commander at V.F.W. Post 5657 at Ellenwood, and returned to work in the oil fields. Survivors include seven children, Mary Leeper, Nancy Leeper, William Leeper, Stephen Leeper, Mrs. Luicanne Christiansen, of Great Bend, Laurence Michael Leeper, Pueblo, Colo., Paul A. Leeper, Topeka; two brothers, Elmer Leeper, Holyrood, and George W. Leeper, Ellenwood; six sisters, Geneva Rathbun and Mildred Lemon, Ellenwood, Betty Scheufler and Mabel Herl, Great Bend, Gladys Lee, Clairmore, Okla., and Irene Hoobler, Maple Hill; and three grandchildren. Services were held at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend on Friday, December 29, at 10 a.m. The Reverend Eugene Tollefson was the officiating minister. | 7282 |  | Obituary- Leinwetter, Edward Edward Leinwetter Edward M. “Ed” Leinwetter, 93, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 27,2017 at a Topeka care facility. Ed was born February 3,1924 in rural Herndon, Kansas, the son of Mathias and Bertha (Allacher) Leinwetter. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a P.O.W/lntern in Sweden for 4 months. He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1947. He owned and operated the Leinwetter Funeral Home in Atwood, Kansas. He was a very compassionate funeral director, providing support and comfort to thousands of families during his long career before retiring in 1985. He was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Atwood and currently a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka, the American Legion, V.F.W., and the Lions Club. In addition, he was a loyal Kansas City Royals fan and avidly followed KU and KSU sports. During retirement, he enjoyed living in Bella Vista, Arkansas, for several years. Edward married Eileen Marie Thiele on February 3,1948 in Norton County, Kansas. She survives. He was born December 22, 1956, in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Melvin and Lupe (Madrigal) LeMay. He graduated from Council Grove High School in 1975. He married Roberta Immenschuh, they had two daughters, Sheena and Brittani. Roberta passed away in 2006. Louie married Cathy Wright on May 7, 2011. Over the years, Louie worked in feedlots, construction and retired on December 31, 2016, from Union Pacific Railroad. After retirement, Louie and Cathy took a Caribbean Cruise, they enjoyed camping and dancing. Louie enjoyed being outdoors and had a love for cattle and horses. He was never seen without a smile and always took time to visit with friends. Louie loved his family and grandkids, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Louie was confirmed at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a member of BLE 90 and the Morris County Youth Rodeo. He was preceded in death by his father Melvin LeMay, step-father George Vega, and first wife Roberta LeMay. Services were held at 3 p.m., Tuesday from the Burlieu-Cowan Funeral Home with the Rev. G.H. Grotey of the Baptist church officiating. | 7288 |  | Obituary- Lemon, Alice V. MRS. ALICE LEMON Alice Victoria Kirby, daughter of Samuel J. and Carolina Elizabeth Kirby, was born May 14th, 1862 in Carroll County, Virginia. At an early age she moved with her family to Kansas and located on a farm near Topeka. On April 12, 1888, she was united in marriage to Charles Lemon and to this union were born five children— Cecil Calvert, Edna Blanch, Erven Edward, Troy Samuel and Alverta May. She passed away August 24th at the farm home northwest of Rossville to which she came as a bride. Mrs. Lemon was a faithful member of the Rossville Christian Church and attended services as long as health would permit. Her husband and two sons have preceded her in death. Mr. Lemon passed away June 7, 1927; Erven on February 26, 1899 and Cecil, June 26, 1948. She leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters, Mrs. Edna Wade of Silver Lake, Mrs. Alverta Carrel of Rossville and one son, Troy Lemon of St. Marys. There are fifteen grand children and fifteen great-grandchildren. Three sisters and three brothers also survive: Mrs. Laura DeGraff of Shawnee, Okla., Mrs. Fannie Howerton of Gentrie, Arkansas, and Mrs. Minnie Dolan, of Lamont, Okla; John Kirby, Guy Kirby and Troy Kirby, all of Lamont, Okla. To have known this good woman was a privilege and she leaves many friends and neighbors to mourn her passing. Funeral services were held Saturn day afternoon at 2:30 at the Christian Church with Mr. Orel Newbrey, of Downs, Kansas, in charge. Music was furnished by Mrs. Maxine Trimble and Mrs. Lorene Parr, with Edith Higginbotham at the piano. Pallbearers were eight grandsons, including Harold Lemon, Virgil Lemon, Clyde Lemon, Don Lemon, Jas Wade, Benjamin Wade, Thomas Wade, and Leslie Carrell. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery. | |

| 7291 |  | Obituary- Lemon, Cecil Cecil Lemon Dies In Auto-Truck Crash Cecil Lemon of this city was killed after a collision at 6:20 Saturday, morning at the intersection of the lower Silver Lake road and the “Peonia Farm” road 1-2 mile south of Highway 40. He died two hours later at the hospital. Six other persons were injured including, three in the truck bearing Lemon to an alfalfa field west of North Topeka, and three occupying the car which crashed into the truck. The persons injured included: Louis J. Lannan 28, of 608 Jewell; Betty Louise Claborn. 22, of 522 Fillmore; Dennis Glotzback, 18 of 311 Ellwood; H. L. Miller, 69, of Rossville; Henry Martinek, 43, of Rossville; and Robert Viergever 18, of Willard. The latter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Viergever of Willard. He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg. He was returned home Tuesday. Mr. Miller was also severely injured and grave doubts were entertained early in the week for his recovery. However he was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bolin at St. Marys, Wednesday. Mr. Martinek, who was driving the truck was able to return home Sunday Lannan was the driver of the car causing the wreck. The circumstance has caused the authorities to announce an inquest will be held late this week. Funeral services for Mr. Lemon were held Wednesday morning at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Orel Newbrey. It was one of the most largely attended funerals ever seen in this community. Music was furnished by Mrs. Alice Boyd, Mrs. Lorene Harth, with Mrs. Maxine Trimble as accompanist. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. H. Davis, Lawrence Ketter, Ivan Marney, Martin Whearty, Fred McCollough and Ray Parr. Cecil Calvert Lemon was born Jan. 30, 1889 in Rossville community and passed away June 26th, 1948 at the age of 50 years, 5 months and 26 days. He was the son of Mrs. Alice Lemon and the late Charles G. Lemon of Route One and had spent his entire life in the Rossville community. At the time of his death he was employed by the Raw Dehydrating Co., at their Rossville plant. He was united in marriage to Anna E. Lee, May 25th, 1910. To this union eight children were born. He is survived by his wife, Anna E. Lemon of the home; four sons, Harold C., Clyde E., and Donald L., all of Topeka, and Virvil L., of Tilton Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Farley and Mrs. Dorothy Kovar, of Rossville; Mrs. Thelma Carrell of Manhattan, and Mrs. Anita VandeVelde of Emmett; his mother, Mrs. Alice Lemon, Route One, a brother, Troy L. of St. Marys; two sisters, Mrs. Alverta Carrell of Route One and Mrs. Edna Wade of Silver Lake; 12 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. | |

He was born in Rossville, and had lived in Des Moines 30 years. He was a candy salesman with various companies before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War Il and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also was a member of Izaak Walton League and had served as a chapter president. Mr. Lemon is survived by his wife, Helen; four stepsons, Jim Glanz, New York City, NY, Greg Glanz, Des Moines, Bob Glanz, St. Louis, and Bill Glanz, Alexandria, VA; a sister, Dorothy McDonald, Sunrise Beach, MO; three grand-children and seven stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anita VandeVelde, and other relatives. The family received friends Monday at Southtown Funeral Home in Des Moines. Lemon, 67, St. Peters, Mo., a former Topekan, who died Tuesday, Feb. 20. 1990, at a St Charles, Mo., hospital. Mr. Lemon was a cattle buyer for John Morrell & Co., before he retired in 1982. He was born Oct. 20. 1922, in Rossville, the son of Cecil and Anna Lee Lemon. He lived in Topeka until 1952 when he moved to Sioux City, Iowa. He also lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., LeMars, Iowa, and St, Louis, Mo. Mr. Lemon was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, Iowa, Sts. Joachim and Ann Church in St. Louis, Mo., Eagles Lodge, and American Legion. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 in Topeka. Mr. Lemon was a veteran of World War II. having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was married to Mary Regina Quinlan June 1, 1945, in Perry. She died Jan. 20, 1969. | 7297 |  | Obituary- Lemon, Harold 3 ToCar-truck collision kills Topeka couple By STEVE FRY Capital-Journal law enforcement writer A Topeka couple driving home from a ballroom dance at a St. Joseph, Mo., civic club were killed early Sunday near St. Joseph when their car and an oncoming pickup truck collided, friends driving ahead of the couple said Monday. Sgt. Rex Stuart of the Missouri Highway Patrol identified the Tope-ka couple killed in the accident as Harold C. Lemon, 74, and his wife, Frances Lemon, 73. The Lemons lived at 1226 N. Kansas Ave. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the accident, identified by the Missouri Highway Patrol as Steven Dale Courter, 28, St. Joseph, remained in Heartland East Hospital, St. Joseph, on Monday. Courter was admitted to Heartland East with a laceration to the left eye and bruises on the arms, a hospital spokesman said. Courter originally was thought to have a possible skull concussion but none was found, the hospital official said. Mike Insco, Buchanan County (Mo.) prosecuting attorney, said Monday that no charges or traffic citations had been filed in connection with the accident. The accident site was in Buchanan County. Insco said Monday that he was awaiting the results of laboratory tests on Courier’s blood. Insco declined to discuss what substance was being tested for. Stuart said the accident occurred at 1:45 a.m. Sunday on US-59, a two-lane highway, 13 miles south of St. Joseph. The accident occurred about three miles east of the Kansas-Missouri border. Harold Lemon was driving south on US-59, and Courter was driving a pickup truck north on US-59, Stuart said. The Courter pickup crossed the highway center line, and the Lemon automobile and Courter pickup collided nearly head-on, Stuart said. The Lemons were dead at the accident scene. The pickup and car were destroyed in the accident. Courter, who was alone in his pickup, was wearing a seat belt, and the Lemons weren’t wearing seat belts. Leo and Evelyn Lynn, Nortonville, were riding in a separate vehicle but traveling with the Lemons when the Lemon car and the Courter truck collided. The Lynns and Lemons were friends. The Lemons had arrived in St. Joseph about 2 p.m. Saturday to attend a ballroom dance at the Moose Lodge in east St. Joseph. “I asked Frances earlier in the evening if they were going to come back to Topeka (immediately after the dance), and she said yes,” Evelyn Lynn said. The dance ended at midnight Saturday. “(The Lemons) asked us if we would like to get some breakfast at a restaurant” in St. Joseph, Evelyn Lynn said. The two couples stopped at the restaurant to eat breakfast and left St. Joseph about 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Evelyn Lynn said. “(The Lemons) wanted to follow us out of town because they didn’t know their way out of St. Joseph,” she said. The Lynns were driving ahead of the Lemons when the Lynns lost sight of the Lemon car. The Lynns turned their car around to go back and found the accident. “It was just a terrible sight. We lost our son-in law three years ago (in a traffic accident). It brought back terrible memories,” Evelyn Lynn said.'' “It looked like the driver’s side of the car had been hit and pushed everything back into Harold. It looked like it killed them instantly,” Evelyn Lynn said. The Lemons remained in the front seat of the automobile. The pickup, which sustained heavy damage on the front, went off the road and into a ditch, she said. The highway was straight and level at the accident site and had standing water on the pavement. It was lightly raining at the time of the accident. | |
