| 6451 |  | Obituary- Hook, Emma Aged Silver Lake resident dies Saturday Mrs. Emma A. Hook, 91, Silver Lake, died Saturday in a Topeka convalescent center. Services were held Tuesday in a Topeka mortuary, with interment in Rochester Cemetery. Born Apr. 14, 1879, at Winsor, Ill., she had lived in the Silver Lake community 73 years. She was married to Benjamin M. Hook, Feb. 23, 1898, at Rossville. He died Aug. 14, 1954. Mrs. Hook was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nina Hook, in 1944. Survivors include four sons; Guilford and Benjamin M. Jr., both of Silver Lake; Maynard, of Route 3, Topeka, and Howard D., of Route 6, Topeka; three daughters: Mrs. Vera Howell, Silver Lake; Mrs. Audrey Wood, Topeka; and Mrs. Norma Wood, Shawnee Mission; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Roberta Bennett of Wichita spent Saturday and Sunday of last week with her grandmother, Mrs. Ethelyn Ferguson. | |
| 6452 |  | Obituary- Hook, Guilford Guilford W. Hook Guilford W. Hook, 88, Silver Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1988, in a Topeka hospital. Mr. Hook farmed in the Silver Lake area all his life before retiring in 1965. He was born Aug. 7, 1900, in Silver Lake, the son of Benjamin M. and Emma Bartlett Hook. He attended Silver Lake schools and Strickler’s Business College in, Topeka. Mr. Hook was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist church and the Moose Lodge No. 555 in Topeka. He was married to Helen L. Leep on Sept. 20, 1923, in Topeka. She died Nov. 29, 1981. Survivors include two brothers, Maynard C. Hook, Topeka, and Howard D. Hook, Silver Lake; two sisters, Vera I. Howell and Norma L. Wood, both of Topeka; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Chapel with burial in Rochester Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 188, Silver Lake, 66539. | |
| 6453 |  | Obituary- Hook, Leroy Leroy Hook Dead. Leroy Hook died of cancer of the stomach last Sunday in a private hospital in Kansas City where he had been under the care of a specialist. On Friday he submitted to an operation as the only means of saving his life. He rallied from this and lingered until Sunday noon when death prevailed and his soul was wafted to the Spirit lands. Surrounding his death bed were his wife, the father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W.V. Hook, a sister, Mrs. Sam Martin, and his father-in-law, Mr. Laswell. The body was brought to Rossville on the Sunday evening train and taken to the home of his parents on Navarre street to await the funeral which was held Tuesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Wykert, pastor of the Olive Branch U.B. Church, of which the deceased was a member. The funeral was largely attended, the church being crowded while many were compelled to remain out on the lawn. The casket was banked with beautiful cut flowers, tokens of respect and sympathy from friends of the family. Many friends from Topeka, Silver Lake, St. Marys and Delia were in attendance. At Delia, where Mr. Hook was so lately in business, all the business houses were closed the afternoon of the funeral and during the services at the church the stores of this city were also closed. The burial took place in the city cemetery. Delmar Leroy Hook was born near Rossville Jan. 6, 1879. He grew to manhood here and was married to Miss Letha Withers Jan. 10, 1901. To this union two boys came to bless the home. He leaves a wife, two little boys, father, mother, three brothers, and three sisters to mourn his death. Leroy was a member in good standing of the Masons and Woodman Lodges, carrying $1,000 life insurance in the latter. For more than a year past he had been afflicted with stomach trouble. About two weeks ago he sold his restaurant business in Delia and accompanied by his wife he went to Kansas City to take treatment from a specialist. He grew steadily worse and after a consultation with his physician they decided upon an operation. This occurred Saturday morning when disclosed the fact that the disease had made such ravages as to be incurable. A deeper touch of sadness, a keener sense of sorrow is added to the death of Leroy Hook in that he was taken in the prime of young manhood; in the beginning of a career whose horizon shone roseate with golden possibilities and expectations. His was a clean upright life that won the respect of all who knew him. A true friend, a good neighbor and a worthy citizen is the tribute of those who are acquainted with his life -- a solace to the grief stricken family that will live in their memory to the end. | |
| 6454 |  | Obituary- Hook, Louie Mrs. Louie Lucile Hook Mrs. Louie Lucile Hook, 62, 1205 Garfield, died at her home Tuesday, following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 11, 1880, in Bourbon County near Fort Scott. For the past fifty years she had made her home in Topeka. Mrs. Hook was a member of the Toltec Rite of Topeka, Westminster Presbyterian church and the Security Benefit Association. She is survived by her husband, J.W. Hook, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Kasten, Topeka; one brother, Clyde W. Wasson, Topeka. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Penwells funeral home. W.H. Wasson was principal of Rossville Grade School in 1896 and taught for six years. The family lived in the late Bill Baylis cottage on north Main St. | |
| 6455 |  | Obituary- Hook, Mina 1 Mina Hook Mrs. Mina A. Hook, after a long illness, passed away at her home in Rossville, Thursday evening, Nov. 18, at the age of 74 years and 5 months. She was born at Tipton, Mo., in 1863, and moved with her parents, the late Dr. and Mrs. A.G. McGill, to Silver Lake, Kansas, in 1879, making her home in Shawnee county since. Surviving her are her husband, W.V. Hook; two sons, Joe Neiswender, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Thurlow Neiswender of Cicero, Illinois; one sister, Mrs. C.L. Dolman of Topeka, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Rossville Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor, Dr. H.L. Nelson, who was assisted by the Rev. James W. Reed and Rev. Willis Schnelle. Music was furnished by Mrs. Fannie Reser, Mrs. Margaret Witter, Miss Edith Higginbotham, and Mrs. Peter Navarre, with Mrs. Mabel Eversole piano accompanist. The pallbearers were Messrs. Marvin Davis, Gus Kassebaum, C.W. Vorhies, David Davis, Albert Reser, and J.F. Zook. Burial was in the Silver Lake cemetery. | |

Hook Dead Mrs. W.V. “Rosa” Hook died very suddenly at her home on Navarre Street this city Wednesday at 2 o’clock p.m. While on the street Tuesday she was taken ill with heart trouble and went at once to her home and a physician sent for. She was apparently in no great danger and it was thought she would soon recover. Wednesday at 2 o’clock she lapsed into a sinking spell and in a few moments was dead. The blow fell with crushing force on the husband, children and relatives who were all unaware of her dangerous condition. The children who were away from home, Fred from Kansas City, Golda from Topeka, C.M. and wife and Mrs. Conlan and husband of Junction City and Mrs. Martin and husband of Topeka all arrived during the afternoon. The funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock form the Presbyterian church by the Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka, her former pastor. The news of Mrs. Hook’s death spread with incredible rapidity and amazement and deep sorry were expressed by all. She was one of the grand good mothers who everyone loved and held in the highest esteem, and her sudden death casts a gloom over the entire community. The obituary notice will appear next week. | 6458 |  | Obituary- Hook, William L. 1 William Lowell Hook Lowell Hook, 59, passed away suddenly last Friday morning from a heart attack, in the office of the White Star Machine & Supply Co. at Wichita. His death occurred about 45 minutes after he left home for his work. Office workers said he jollied with them as usual, and fell dead without a struggle. He was his usual self his wife stated, and after helping wash the breakfast dishes, bade her goodbye in apparently good health. News of his passing was a shock to Rossville friends and relatives. “Lote” as we all knew him, was a native of this community, the younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Hook. He was born January 8, 1894 north of Rossville. He got his schooling here and married the former Gladys Jamieson, Dec. 31, 1917. They were in the restaurant business here with her brother, Lance Jamieson from 1919 for seven years until 1926 when they sold out and moved to Topeka. He found employment with the Kraft Cheese Co. and for 14 years remained with them until he took a position with the White Star Machine & Supply Co., and moved to Wichita five years ago. From his boyhood days Lote was identified with Rossville ball teams and a fixture behind the bat. His friends are many, he made in nearly two decades with the team. He was a gentleman wherever you met him, on the ball field, in business or in his home with a personality that drew friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wall Diffenderfer Funeral Home in Topeka, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Waldron. Many old friends attended. His body was brought to Rossville cemetery for burial. Pallbearers were Clarence Emert, Joe Navarre, Ralph Page, W. H. Kerr, Homer Reid and Roy Wit. Surviving are his wife, Gladys; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Martin, Topeka, and Mrs. Gertrude Conlan of Miami, Florida, and Capt. Frederick Hook Naval Surgeon with Admiral Halsey’s command in the Pacific area. | |

| 6460 |  | Obituary- Hook, William V. 1 W. V. HOOK A long time friend and a good man passed quietly from our midst Wednesday morning, when W. V. Hook was found dead at his home, where death had over taken him as J he sat in a rocker beside his cook stove. Mr. Hook had been in poor health for some time, but able to be about town each day and seemed to enjoy life to the fullest extent. He passed his 81st year this summer. For a number of years he had entertained a large number of friends and neighbors at his home on each birthday anniversary and looked forward to the annual event with pleasure. He was born in Tecumseh in 1857 and was the first white child born there, and was the oldest living native of this county. Mr. Hook has been a resident of Shawnee county his entire life. He retired from active farming about 35 years ago and since had lived in Rossville. Mr. Hook was converted early in life and for a long time was an active member of the U. B. church north of Rossville and officiated with worship at the church for a number of years. After moving from his farm to Rossville he united with the local Presbyterian church and has been a faithful supporter of his church at all times. In 1877 he was married to Miss Rose Ann Miller and to this union, nine children were born; five of whom survive. Mrs. Hook, passed very suddenly about thirty years ago in their home on Navarre street. After some years he married Mrs. Mina Neiswender of Silver Lake, and they continued to live at the old home, until just a year ago when she passed away. | |

| 6462 |  | Obituary- Hoover, George G. S. Hoover George Samuel Hoover was born near Lexington, Kentucky, July 20, 1866. He passed away December 17, 1934, at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 27 days. When he was three years old his parents moved to Missouri, where he grew up. As a young man he lived and worked in Kansas City for several years. Later he located near Rossville, and for over 40 years he has been a successful farmer in this community. On May 22, 1891, he was united in marriage to Anna Hass, and after these years together, she is left to mourn his going. Other survivors include three brothers, Tom Hoover of Independence, Mo., Wiley and Harvey Hoover, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Alma Lasswell of Topeka, also numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Conwell’s Mortuary Chapel in Topeka, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Horton. Two solos were sung by Mrs. Grace Rogers, accompanied by Miss Lorene Parr. The pall-bearers were George Bickelhaupt, Edward Richmond, Herman Johnson, H. E. McCollough, A.N. White and Ted Fields. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery. | 6463 |  | Obituary- Hoover, Hammond Hammond J. Hoover Hammond James Hoover, 84, St. Joseph, Mo., died Saturday, January 20, 1990, at his home. The son of the late L. Hammond and Catherine King Hoover, he was born October 13, 1905, in Buchanan County in Cono Township, la. He attended schools in Quasqueton, Ia. He was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church. Mr. Hoover moved to Delia in 1925, where he farmed with his father. He married Mary G. Gardner February 24, 1928. The family moved to De Kalb, Mo. in 1943, then to St. Joseph, Mo. in 1945. Mr. Hoover worked as a warehouse groceryman for Affiliated Foods for 23 years before retiring in 1975. Other survivors include two sons, Alvin D and Raphael D„ Rushville, Mo.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two nieces. Services were held January 22, at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, Mo. Entombment was in Memorial Park Mausoleum. | |

Mo., Sunday, called by the death of their mother, Mrs. Kate Hoover, who passed away Sunday, morning at 6 o’clock. Mrs. Hoover died at the home of her son Mr. T. A. Hoover, with whom she made her home. Mrs. Hoover had reached the age of 96 years, 3 months and 9 days. She retained her faculties up until her last wakeful moment in life, quietly passing away as she slept. The funeral was held Monday, July 7, at 2 p. m., and the body was interred at Salem church near the city of Atherton. The surviving mem¬bers of her family are five sons: Mr. T. A. She died Friday evening in a Topeka nursing home; where she had been living for several years. A resident of Rossville most of her life, Mrs. Hopkins was born in Indiana. She was the widow of Ira Hopkins, longtime resident and businessman in Rossville. Survivors include two step sons and three step daughters and nine grandchildren. | |
| 6468 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Arthur Arthur E. Hopkins LAWRENCE - Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey Funeral Home here for Arthur E. Hopkins, 74, Lawrence, who died Sunday in a Lawrence hospital. He was born Jan. 27, 1903, in Oklahoma, and lived in Topeka and Rossville many years before moving to California in 1945. He was an electrician and a member of the Church of Christ of Lawrence. His widow, Mrs. Ruby Hopkins, survives at the home. Other survives include two sons, Robert Hopkins, Los Angeles, and Eugene Hopkins, Midwest City, Okla.; a brother, Walter Hopkins, Route 6, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Ella Mae Barrett, Florence; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Anna Belle Black, Route 3, Lawrence, and Mrs. Dorothy Mendenhall, Denver; a stepson, Carl Baker, Denver; 15 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. The funeral was held today at 2 o'clock from Shellabarger's chapel. Mrs. Hopkins was the wife of Fred E. Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Hopkins of this city. The Hopkins home was 901 North Madison. Beside her husband she is survived by three children, Fred 12, Walter [8?], Ella May, 2; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.G. | 6470 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Bertha d.1913 Bertha Orwan was born Dec. 21, 1875 in Newbloomfield, Perry county, Pennsylvania, and departed this world Sept. 24, 1913. Her parents died while she was only a few years old and she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. George Stumbaugh and removed to Kansas in 1883 at the age of eight. On Jan. 16, 1895 she was united in marriage to Ira Hopkins. To this union eight children were born two of whom died while infants. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins united with the Methodist church in 1891. Mrs. Hopkins was an ideal mother whose whole thought was for her family. She was loved by all her neighbors for her kindly and sunny disposition. Her loss will be felt most keenly by the whole community. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Friday, Sept. 26 conducted by the Rev. J.K. Miller. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. | |
| 6471 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Bertha L. d.1905 Mrs. Bertha Hopkins, died at her home in Shawnee, Ok., Wednesday, March 18, 1905 at the age of 26 yrs. Her death was due to blood poisoning induced by childbirth. Her maiden name was Templin. The oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Templin who reside at Silver Lake, Kansas. Besides her husband and parents she leaves two children, little boys, aged two and four years, also two brothers and one sister who live with their parents at the Lake. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at this place last Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J.G. Mayer of Topeka. The funeral was very largely attended, the church being crowded to the doors with sympathizing friends and neighbors. The burial took place in the Rossville cemetery. The bereaved husband returned to Oklahoma Sunday where he will ship his goods and return to this city to make his home. The two children are in care of the grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Hopkins. | |
| 6472 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Carl Carl Hopkins Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Assumption Catholic Church for Carl O. Hopkins, 78, 1924 N. Central, who died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He was born May 10, 1896, at Rossville and spent most of his life in the Topeka community. He served in the Navy during World War I. He was a coach car man for Santa Fe Railway and worked for the railway 47 years before he retired in 1960. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion. He was married to Retha Kirby on April 7, 1967. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Orwin L. Hopkins, 2321 Duncan Drive, Robert Hopkins, 1815 Lott and Bernard C. Hopkins, 5625 W. 16th; three sisters, Mrs. Clara McDonald, 721 Roosevelt, Mrs. Dorothy Sader, Fort Riley, and Mrs. Gladys Patterson, Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hopkins will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brennan Funeral Home where parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday. | |
| 6473 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Emma Emma Bertha Hopkins, the four year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hopkins, died Friday morning Mar. 4, 1904. The funeral services were conducted at the home, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. Clyde L. Kuhn. The little girl was taken sick with appendicitis about a week before her death. Though every effort was made to save her life, all was in vain, and at 6 o'clock Friday morning, with the severest pain and suffering, the little life went out in death. This is twice that the death angel has come into this home. And each time a little girl with her sunshine and innocent has been taken to her heavenly home. Though the hearts of the father and mother are torn with sorrow and grief, yet God who doth all things well sustains them. | 6474 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Ira 1 Ira T. Hopkins Funeral services for Ira Hopkins were held Saturday afternoon, May 20 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Don Jones. Mrs. Hopkins passed away Wednesday night, May 17, after a brief illness in a Topeka hospital. Music for the service was furnished by Mrs. Lorene Harth and Mrs. Maxine Trimble, with Mrs. Irene Campbell, accompanist. Pallbearers were Joe Parr, John Lillard, Glen Davis, Shirley Parr, Wm. Hess and Ralph Page. Burial was in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Hopkins was a native son, born in this community Dec. 15, 1875, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Hopkins. He spent his early life on the Hopkins farm west of Rossville. His first wife died in the early part of the century, with six children born to this union. Some years after death he married Alice Ross, who with five children, survive him. They are three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Patterson, Wichita; Mrs. Clara McDonald and Mrs. Dorothy Fader, Topeka; two sons, Carl Hopkins, Topeka; and Marvin Hopkins, Miami, Florida. One son, Omar, preceded him in death. One sister, Ida Ayers, Uvalde, Texas also survives. For over forty years, Mr. Hopkins was in the mercantile business, first in hardware and later in general merchandise. He retired some years ago and had lived quietly at his home until fatal illness. He was a member of the Rossville Methodist church since Aug. 6, 1905. Mr. Hopkins had an abiding love of his community and his neighbors in Rossville. He loved to help other people, and anyone who knew him came to depend upon him for advice and counsel. He was always ready to extend a helping hand to those who needed it, and he set an example of goodness, patience and neighborliness. | 6476 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Josiah Josiah Thomas Hopkins was born June 4, 1845, in Phelps county, Missouri, died May 5, 1921, aged 75 years, 11 months and 1 day. At the age of 10 he came to Kansas with his parents in 1855, locating near Tecumseh, Ks. In March 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca E. Heslet. To this union nine children were born, four of whom survive. Mr. Hopkins came to Rossville with his family in 1878 locating first southwest of Rossville on what is known as the Elmer Young farm. In 1880 he sold the place and purchased the present Hopkins farm northwest of Rossville where he continued to reside until 1907 when he moved into town. During his long residence here Mr. Hopkins had served almost continuously for 35 years as Justice of the Peace. While too young to serve in the army of the Civil War, he was a member of the Kansas National guard at the time of the Price raid into Kansas. After the war he made three trips across the plains of Kansas to Denver as a freighter, the last time loading out from Wamego as the railroad had reached that point in its westward reach. As a mark of respect the business houses of Rossville closed during the funeral services Sat. afternoon, May 7. The services were held in the Methodist church, the sermon preached by the Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka. The pallbearers were friends whom Mr. Hopkins had selected himself to serve in that capacity. They were Will VanOrsdol., F.P. McCollough, J.C. Bradley, W.V. Hook, Chas. Alexander and John Kesler. The body was interred in Rossville cemetery. | 6477 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Rebecca Mrs. J.T. Hopkins Died Monday Mrs. Rebecca Ellen Hopkins, widow of the late J.T. Hopkins, died at 5 o'clock Monday evening following a long illness. Since a stroke of paralysis last February she had been practically helpless and required the assistance of a caretaker. Mrs. Hopkins had been unconscious since Friday of last week and no hope was held out for any improvement in her condition. Her death was due to a number of complications. Mrs. Hopkins had been a resident of Kansas for the past fifty-nine years. She was a native of Zionville, Indiana, where she was born, Dec. 1, 1847, coming to Rossville township while a young woman. While living at Tecumseh she was united in marriage to Joseph Hopkins, March 16, 1870. Of the seven children born to this union four survive her. She united with the Baptist church in her girlhood but later affiliated with the Methodist church here. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m. and was attended by a great number of lifetime friends and neighbors. The service was conducted by Rev. Basquin. The songs sung at the service were the one selected by Mrs. Hopkins herself in planning the little services she preferred should be done following her death. Members of her family who survive are her daughter, Mrs. Ida Ayers, of Magnolia, Texas, and three sons, Ira T. of Rossville, Fred and William of Topeka. She is also survived by four half-sisters, Mrs. Frank Cooper of Eskridge, Mrs. Mina Wax of Maple Hill, Mrs. M.S. McElvain and Mrs. Delia Swearingen of Rossville; three half-brothers, James Heslet, Washington, D.C., Joseph Heslet, of Rossville, and Jacob Heslet, address unknown. | 6478 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, William WILLIAM B. HOPKINS Wm. B. Hopkins, of 1127 Forest avenue, Topeka, died unexpectedly from a heart attack last Friday afternoon while visiting at the home of his son Ira, in another part of the city, 1214 Clay street. Mr. Hopkins was talking in front of the son’s home when he sank to the ground and was pronounced dead when he was carried into the house. Mr. Hopkins was a former member of the Topeka police force and for two years prior to becoming a policeman had served two years as a guard at the state penitentiary. He had spent practically all his life in the vicinity of Rossville prior to his removal to Topeka about 10 years ago. He was born at Rossville April 3, 1881, and at the date of his death was 48 years and 23 days old. During his boyhood, at the age of 15, he was converted end baptized in the Rossville Christian church. He was married to Millie Smith September 8, 1907, and five children were born to this union, all of whom are still living. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and the five children, Ira, Thelma, Roy, Clarence and Floyd, all of the home address except Ira who is married and living in Topeka. He also is survived by one brother, Ira T. Hopkins of Rossville and one sister, Ida Ayers, Montell Texas; and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at Conwell’s Funeral Home at 8th and Quincy, Topeka, Monday. April 29, conducted by R. G. Anderson, of the Oakland Methodist church. Interment was in the Memorial cemetery. He later had an apparent cerebral hemorrhage. He was born Sept. 26, 1884, at Bilnz, Czechoslovakia, and lived in the United States since 1912. He lived in the Delia community about 60 years. He served in the Czechoslovakian Army in 1909. He was employed by Union Pacific Railroad 30 years before he retired in 1949. He later was a custodian at Delia Grade School eight years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Delia, Moravian Lodge No. 128, ZCBJ, Rossville, and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. He was married to Veronica Hejtmanek on Nov. 8, 1908, at Bratislav, Czechoslovakia. She died in November 1968. In August of 1945, Sara Stum and Benjamin Horak were united in marriage. Bennie preceded her in death on November 29, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Duane Stum; and her daughter, Peggy Jean Workman. Sara and Bennie farmed in the Delia community many years. She had a heart ailment. Born Nov. 3, 1886, at Bratislav, Czechoslovakia, she came to the United States in 1912, and had lived in the Delia and Rossville communities since then. Mrs. Horak was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church and the Moravian Lodge. On Nov. 8, 1908, she was married to Ignac Horak at Bratislav. Besides her husband, survivors include: four daughters: Mrs. Rose Davis, Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. Irene Collett, Washougal, Wash., Mrs. Esther Wehner, Rossville, and Mrs. Emily Dodge, Delia; Four sons, Rudy Horak and Albert Horak, both of Bakersfield, Calif., Bennie Horak, Delia, and Eddie Horak, Lewisburg, Ohio; 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Horn, who is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Heath, has been living with her parents during her husband's absence. She left yesterday morning, accompanied by her brother Clarence, for Quinlan, Okla., where the body will be sent for burial. Mr. and Mrs. Horn were [married] June 13, 1917 at Topeka. | 6493 |  | Obituary- Horton, Francis Francis Horton Corporal Francis Alberta Horton, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Horton was born June 27, 1895 at Corning, Kans., and was killed in action in the battle of the Argonne forest September 29 at the age of 23 years, 8 months and 2 days. Francis grew to manhood in Nemaha county and enlisted in the Holton militia May 1, 1915. After serving one and a half months on the Mexican border with Co. B of Holton he was honorably discharged August 5, 1910. When war was declared with Germany he volunteered his service for his country and re-enlisted May 28, 1917 with Co. B of Holton, was commissioned corporal July 16, 1918, received his training at Camp Doniphan, Okla., with the 85th division. The division was ordered to France in April and he was there 5 months and gave supreme sacrifice September 29, 1918. He united with the Christian church of Holton at the age of 20 years and was a member of the Dynamo class. He was a true and faithful Christian. Beside a host of friends and other relatives he leaves to mourn his loss, parents, six sisters and three brothers: Mrs. W.T. Thompson, of Corning, Kan; Mrs. J. L. Harper, of Hunter, Mo; Mrs. Ben Ward, of Centralia; Mrs. M. L. Welliver, of Fairview, Kas; Mrs. L. E. | 6494 |  | Obituary- Hosick, George George D. Hosick George D. Hosick passed away Tuesday morning, May 19th, at the home of his niece, Bertha St. Auben in St. Marys. Death was the result of leakage of the heart complicated with dropsy. Mr. Hosick had been ill at the St. Auben home for over a year. Funeral services took place at the M.E. church in Willard, Kansas, and the remains were interred in the Maple Hill cemetery. The Rev. G.C. Albin of Rossville officiated at the last rites. The deceased was born at Parish, New York on April 11, 1863. He had been a resident, however, of Willard for 44 years. He is survived by one son, George A. No details in connection with the crash were received. Miss Houck has been employed in a hospital at Hawthorne, Calif., and occasionally took weekend plane rides to points of interest in California. She was born March 2, 1908, near Mayetta, the daughter of Otto and Beatrice Wyatt Jacobson. She grew up in the Mayetta community and was graduated from Mayetta High School in 1926. She farmed with her husband until his death. She was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church, a char¬ter member of the Delia FCE, served on the Blandin School Board, and had served on the Lin¬coln Township Election Board in Jackson County for many years. She wrote the High Prairie News for the “Holton Recorder” for many years. Mrs. Houck was a resident of the Delia community for 71 years. On April 13, 1929, she married Leroy Houck in Lyndon. He died in 1955. She is survived by a son, Ken¬neth R. Houck, Delia, and a grand¬son. Visitation was Wednesday evening at Piper-Verschelden Fu¬neral Home, St. Marys. Her service was at 2 p.m. Thursday at the fu¬neral home. Burial was in the De¬lia Cemetery, Delia. She died February 16, 1986. A daughter, Bernice M. Houck died in 1947.
