| 10851 |  | Obituary- Wines, Rebecca Rebecca Wines Mrs. Rebecca Wines 82, passed away Sunday, December 22, at Holton, Kansas, after a lingering illness. She had been bedfast over three years. Mrs. Wines was a pioneer settler of Rossville community coming here in the Sixties with her parents. Her maiden name was Marney, being a sister of the late James, Jonathan and William Marney. She was born Dec. 7, 1858 in Putnam County, Missouri. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Walter Crouse of Auburn, Kansas; a son Jesse Henry of Miami, Okla.; and one sister, Mrs. Belle Stum, of Rossville, several nieces and nephews and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 1:00 in the Rossville Christian church, conducted by C. K. Thomas, of Kimberlin Heights, Tenn. Music was furnished by Mrs. Pete Navarre and Mrs. C. K. Thomas, Miss Edith Higginbotham, accompanist. Pallbearers were John Stum, Joe Marney, Dudley Marney, Glenn Marney, and Ivan Marney. Burial was in Rossville cemetery. | |
| 10852 |  | Obituary- Winfough, Wayne Wayne C. Winfough HAVENSVILLE -- Wayne C. Winfough, 78, of Havensville, died Friday, September 8, 2006 at his home. He was born September 6,1928 at Logan, Oklahoma, the son of Chris H. and Cora Chappell Winfough. Wayne was a farmer and rancher. He also drove a school bus for the Havensville and Onaga schools for twenty-eight years. He was a member of Havensville Christian Church and the Havensville Lions Club. He coached high school girls summer softball and was active with the Havensville Independence Day Celebration, where he enjoyed giving rides in the "Wayne’s Train" that he built. He loved to go fishing, and camping, especially in the Colorado mountains. He married Vinita Eyer July 21, 1948 at the Mountain View Baptist Church in Oklahoma. She survives. Wayne was preceded in death by three brothers, Otis Winfough, Chester Winfough, and Calvin Winfough, who died in infancy. Other survivors include three daughters, Kathy Holliday and husband Felix, Smithville, MO, Donna McDonnell and husband Dennis, and Jo Boswell and husband Kenny, all of Havensville; one sister, Cornelia Brian, Rossville; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Havensville Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Havensville Cemetery. Wayne will lie in state after noon Sunday at the Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga where family and friends will meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday. | 10853 |  | Obituary- Winfrey, George George Winfrey George Winfrey of Valley Falls died Wednesday in a Kansas City hospital. He was born in Smith County, Tennessee and had lived in Kansas 60 years. The family resided in the vicinity of Rossville for a number of years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jessie Anderson, Mayetta; seven sons, James Winfrey, Casper, Wyo., Harold, Raymond and Victor Winfrey, all of Sioux City, Iowa; Willard Winfrey, Manhattan; Russell and Cleo Winfrey of Kansas City, Mo.; two nieces, Mrs. Estella Logan, 905 College, Topeka; and Mrs. Cora B. Jones, Kansas City, Kan., and a nephew, James Nichols, Paxico. The body was brought to Rossville Cemetery for burial. | |
| 10854 |  | Obituary- Winfrey, Marie MARIE WINFREY Marie Winfrey, daughter of Mr. and' Mrs. George Winfrey, was born March 19, 1906, at Wabaunsee, Kan. and died April 11, 1929. at Christ hospital, Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 23 years and 22days. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Winfrey of Rossville; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Anderson of Delia; seven brothers, James Winfrey, Casper, Wyoming; Harold Winfrey, Sioux City, Iowa; Willard Winfrey, Wamego, Kan.; Raymond Winfrey, Sioux City, Iowa; Victor, Russell and Bernell, of the home address; a host of relatives and friends. She was a junior of the Silver Lake high school. She was a loving daughter and deeply interested in religious principles and read her bible constantly as well as other religious books. Her death occurred at 4:45 p. m. Thursday, April 11, following an operation Thursday forenoon for the removal of an inward goiter. Funeral services were held in the Rossville Presbyterian church, Monday, April 15, at 2:30 p. m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. Apel. Music was furnished by Mrs. A. B. Jamieson and Mrs. Homer Reid. The pallbearers were Messrs. Walter Jones, Archie Jones, Willard Vance, Alfred Vance, John Vance and Jesse Robison. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery. Long years will dry the bursting tears, And calm and soothe the pain; But love will keep our memory green Until we meet again. | |
| 10855 |  | Obituary- Wingate, Norville Norville G. Wingate Norville G. Wingate, 86, Topeka, died Friday, July 10, 1992, at a Topeka retirement home. Mr. Wingate joined Commerce Bank and Trust of Topeka in 1960, where he was senior vice president and a member of the board of directors for 32 years. He previously was executive director of Urban Renewal of Topeka during the planning, acquisition and relocation phases of the program. He and a partner founded radio station KTOP in 1947 in Topeka. He also owned farm implement businesses in Rossville and Emporia and was active in the ranching and cattle businesses. He began working for Phillips Petroleum Company in Kansas City, Mo., then was transferred to Topeka as a manager in June 1940. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born April 17, 1906, in Sedalia, Mo., the son of Anthony Earl and Elta D. Gregory Wingate. He attended schools in St. Joseph and Kansas City. He was a guard on the Amateur Athletic Union basketball team that won the championship of the United States in 1928. Mr. Wingate was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Topeka Rotary Club, chamber of commerce, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion and Topeka Country Club. He was treasurer 25 years on the board of Cerebral Palsy in Topeka. He also was a 50-year member of Temple Masonic Lodge in Kansas City, Mo. He was married to Frances Burrow of Topeka in June 1940. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Margaret Wingate Elstun, Atlanta, Ga., and Carolyn Wingate Zimmerman, Denver, Colo.; a son, Dr. Gregory Burrow Wingate, Phoenix, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. Services were 10 a.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church. Entombment was in Mount Hope Mausoleum. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement. Mrs. Wingert was a receptionist and bookkeeper for many doctors in Kansas, and she last worked for Dr. Brown in St. Marys. She was born Dec. 18,1921, near Windom, the daughter of Richard and Rose Lindquist Raleigh. She graduated from Hutchinson Business College and had lived in Rossville since 1973. Mrs. Wingert was a member of Rossville United Methodist Church and the Windom United Methodist Church. She married Alton E. Wingert on Sept. 14, 1941, at Lyons. He died June 17, 1992. A son, Brian Wingert, died in 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Rozann Tebo, Rossville; three brothers, John Raleigh, Great Bend, Leo Raleigh, Windom, and Bob Raleigh, Atlanta; four grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Windom United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Windom Cemetery at Windom. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville and from 10 a.m. to service time Monday at the church. Relatives and friends will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. Wingert Betty Irene Wingert, 76, Ross ville, died Thursday, October 29, 1998, at the Rossville Valley Manor. She was born December 18, 1921, near Windom, the daughter of Richard and Rose Lindquist Raleigh. She had lived in the Rossville community since 1973. Betty grew up in the Windom community and was graduated from Windom High School. She was graduated from Hutchinson Business College in Hutchinson, and was a receptionist and bookkeeper for many doctors in Kansas, last working for Dr. Fred Brown in St. Marys. Betty was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church and the Windom United Methodist Church. On September 14, 1941, she was married to Alton E. Wingert in Lyons. He died July 17, 1992. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian Wingert in 1978, a sister, June Duske, and two brothers, Galen Raleigh and Jim Raleigh. Surviving her are a daughter, Rozann, and a son-in-law, Robert Tebo, Rossville; three brothers, John Raleigh, Great Bend, Leo Raleigh, Windom, and Bob Raleigh, Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. A family visitation was held Sunday afternoon at Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville. Her service was at 11 a.m. Monday at the Windom United Methodist Church, Windom. Burial was in the Windom Cemetery. Mr. Winkler worked 37 years for Mobile Oil Pipeline production division before he retired. He was born Oct. 29, 1912, near Alma, the son of Theodore and Mary Sharri Winkler. He attended Topeka High School and was graduated from Washburn University in 1936. Mr. Winkler was a member of the Orient Lodge No. 51 A.F&A.M. and First United Methodist Church in Topeka. He was married to Virginia Shaw June 13, 1938, at Glendale, Calif. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Houck, Delia, and Donna Hodges, Topeka; a sister, Hazel Voigt, Topeka; and four grandchildren. He was born Oct. 19, 1885 near Eskridge and spent most of his life in the Dover and Burlingame communities. He was a retired farmer. He was married to Cora Bretton Aug. 18, 1909, at Phillipsburg. She died April 21, 1945. He was married to Irene Griffith May 17, 1947, at Holton. She survives. A son, Cloyce Winsor, died Dec. 7, 1958. She had cancer. Mrs. Winterholler was born in Kansas City, Mo. She was raised and educated in St. Marys and Rossville. She moved to Grandview, Wash., in 1984, and to Prosser in 1985. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, John Mitchell of Prosser, and Joel Mitchell of Grandview, Wash.; a brother, Bill (Judy) Cantillon of Rossville; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Ann Cantillon. Carolyn was buried Wednesday, April 4 at the Prosser Cemetery. | |

She was born March 27,1923, at Delia, to Ray L. and Mollie Kovar Mitchell. Clara married Harold P. Winters, Aug. 18, 1951, at Bentonville, Ark. He died Dec. 18, 1975. She worked for the Fuller Brush Company and the Great Bend Police Department; was a Great Bend resident for 57 years, coming from Jackson County; and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Great Bend. Survivors include three sons: Victor E. Poe Jr., Topeka, Warren C. Graves and wife, Sharon, Rossville, and Harold S. Winters and wife, Jacklyn, Great Bend; a daughter, Tuesday Noonan, Pawnee Rock; a brother, Cody J. Mitchell, Laughlin, Nev.; a sister, Thelma B. Lowey, Montebella, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 16 great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Lonnie Winters; a daughter, Beverly Hopkins and a daughter- in-law, Dorothy Poe. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 29, at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with The Reverend Don Paden officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia. | 10868 |  | Obituary- Wise, Linda Linda Kelsey Wise Linda Kelsey Wise, passed away on Tues¬day, February 26, 2019. She is now our angel in heaven alongside her parents watching over us. Linda was born in Rossville, Kansas to Scott and Faye Kelsey on September 18, 1944. She graduated from The University of Kansas in 1966 and loved her Jayhawks. She was a wonderful stay at home mom who provided unconditional love and guidance. Being a mother was her most rewarding job. After her chil¬dren were grown she worked a number of years at St Antho¬ny's Bone and Joint Hospital in Oklahoma City and later as a hospice nurse where she touched lots of families. She was a friend to many and loved by all. There has never been a more amazing mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. Linda's nurturing and compassionate nature called her to volunteer at Project 66 Food Pantry in Edmond and was an active member of Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City. Linda is survived by her son, Jereme and Jennifer Wise of Austin, Texas. Daughter, Heidi and Brian Reeder of Edmond, Oklahoma. Brother Doug and Dar Kelsey of Mesa, Arizona. Grandchildren - Keelie Brei of Austin, Texas - Ella Jane and Grady James of Edmond, Oklahoma. A celebration of her life will be held on March 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM - Crossings Community Church, 14600 North Portland Ave. - Oklahoma City, OK 73134. He is survived by seven children, Frank Wiseman, of Hoyt; John Wiseman of Rossville; Roscoe Wiseman of Salt Lake City Charles Wiseman of Topeka, Mrs. Cassa Bety, of Denver and Miss Esther Wiseman of Denver. He was a member of North Topeka Camp No. 1243, Modern Woodmen of America. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Kansas Avenue Methodist church. | 10870 |  | Obituary- Witter, Elmer 2 Elmer E. Witter Elmer E. Witter was born in Indiana near College Corner, Ohio April 22nd. 1870. He passed away at his home in Rossville unexpectedly Sunday evening, November 19, 1933 at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 27 days. When about 20 years of age, he came to Kansas, at the invitation of an aunt, and decided to make his home here. On September 15th 1902, he was united in marriage to Margaret Vandemeak at Silver Lake. They soon moved to his farm east of Silver Lake, which was their home until 1920. At that time he sold the farm and retired, moving to Rossville, where they have resided since. Mr. Witter was the fifth in a family of ten children, only one of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and by five brothers and three sisters, most of whom live near the old home in Indiana. Through the long years of his residence here, Mr. Witter has made a name for himself as a friend and neighbor. The quality of his life and character was above reproach, and he often found ways of being helpful and friendly in a quiet way, without seeking or desiring publicity. Funeral services were held at the Rossville Methodist church, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, in charge of Rev. Horton. She was born April 23, 1914, in Kaw Township near Belvue, the daughter of John and Mary Ann Mullen Lytle. She had lived in the St. Marys community most of her life. She grew up in the Belvue community. She worked for K.N.I. in food services. She also worked for Griffin Locker Plant in St. Marys as a meat wrapper and had worked at the Seymour plant in Topeka for many years. She worked for Pottawatomie County as a homemaker and had been a custodian at the St. Marys Grade School. She was married to Delbert Woehr September 15,1938, at Del Norte, Colo. He died April 27, 1966. She was also preceded in death by a son, Darrell, in 1943. Surviving here are four daughters, Darla Hisey, Marble Falls, Tex., Betty Phillips, Austin, Tex., Kay Shepherd, Belvue, and Cheryl Mace, Manhattan; a son, Gerald Woehr, St. Marys; a brother, Clint Lytle, Rossville; one sister, Thelma Seele, Wamego; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. They were killed in a house fire near Rossville Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003. Mrs. Wolc had worked for Flex al in Topeka for 16 years and had been employed at Frito-Lay in Topeka the past six years. She was born Nov. 7,1957, in Topeka, the daughter of William and Tina Polson Olejnik. She was reared in Rossville and graduated from Rossville High School in 1975, where she excelled in track and still holds several school track records. She attended Washburn University in Topeka. Mrs. Wolc was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church. She married Brian Douglas “Doug” Wolc on Feb. 20,1999, in Las Vegas. Blake was born Sept. 24,2000, in Topeka, to Brian Douglas and Lila Jean Olejnik Wolc. He attended Delia Pre-School and was a member of the ZCBJ Moravan Lodge No. 128 in Rossville. Brian “Doug” Wolc survives in Rossville. Mrs. Wolc and Blake also are survived by her parents/ grandparents, William and Tina Olejnik, Rossville. Mrs. Wolc also is survived by a sister, Lisa Pinney, Johnstown, Neb.; a brother, Bob Olejnik, Rossville; and a stepson, Brent Wolc, Rossville. She had been visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Wolcott in Richland, la., and was returning to school. Miss Wolcott became ill with chest pains shortly after entering her apartment. She called a friend and was rushed to the hospital. The autopsy revealed she suffered a heart attack. Jane was born September 1, 1961. in Newton, la. She is survived by her parents, James and Mary Louise Allen Wolcott; two brothers, Jeff and Tom, all of Richland, Ia. | 10875 |  | Obituary- Wolf, Jacob J.S. Wolff Is Dead Kicked by Horse. Died Last Sunday. Jacob S. Wolff [sic Wolf] was kicked by a horse July 10th died from the effects of his injuries last Sunday at his home north west of Rossville. Mr. Wolff formerly lived near Adrian, in Jackson County, and came to this community last spring. The horse that kicked him was one of a team that he had broken to harness last year. It is said that while Mr. Wolff was at dinner on July 10th the young horses began fighting and that he attempted to separate them. He was kicked in the breast which caused hemorrhages from his lungs. Mr. Wolff was 43 years old. He was born in Washington County, Md. June 22, 1869. He came to Kansas in 1893 and spent most of that time in Jackson Co. He was married to Miss Mary Walt Feb 15 1895, and is survived by his wife and four sons, his mother, four brothers and five sisters. Mr. Wolff was a member of the U.B. Church. She was born July 1, 1893, at Scandia, the daughter of John Lars and Anna Wennerstern Larson. She was married to Percy B. Wolverton in 1946. He died July 28, 1967. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. John A. Larson, Anaheim, Calif. Wolverton, 79, former machinist for Trans World Airlines, who died Friday at his home in Rossville. He was born July 24, 1886, in Painesville, Ohio. Before he retired he was employed as a machinist by TransWorld Airlines. He was a member of Rossville Bible Church. During World War I Mr. Wolverton was employed by the federal government in the mechanization of the Army at Fort Robinson, Neb. During World War H with the late Chester R. Hughes of Kansas City, Mo., he invented the pre-rotating airplane landing wheels. In 1930 he sold the free wheeling invention to the studebaker Motor Corporation in South Bend, Ind. His widow, Mrs. Julia Wolverton of the home, survives. Entombment was in Mount Hope Abbey. | |
| 10879 |  | Obituary- Wolverton, Percy 2 Coffee Break By Betty Murray The death of a man like Percy Wolverton causes the freedom- loving philosophy of our American heritage to die a little. He was a man with ideas and ideals about our God-given rights. And he expressed this philosophy in a matter-of-fact way that painted a clear picture. Mr. Wolverton was not only a philosopher, he was an inventor and traveler. This idea man invented free wheeling which he sold to Studebaker corporation, and he was also co-inventor of pre-rotating airplane landing wheels. In fact, his wheel ideas were the subject of a film called “Big Ideas” which was made in New York City in 1956. He had traveled around the United States and knew of the problems of the different sections of the country. Once when I saw him on a winter day in Rossville, he related a story about a bad winter spent in Nebraska and the Dakotas and the problems in combatting the elements. His eyes twinkled as he related this memory of an experience that was terrible and dangerous at the time. I couldn’t help thinking of his philosophy about the race problem since this past week of riots and violence. He told me once that years ago when he lived in the South for a time he learned that there are “the colored folk and then there are the Niggers”. He felt this was the same as “the white folk” and the “white trash”. He said it’s the “Niggers” and the “white trash” that are causing all the trouble. Mr. Wolverton was a jolly fellow. He liked the antiques that he and his wife have collected and was interested and familiar with all the things of the past. Yet he was right up to date on world affairs and current events. I think he liked to be kidded about the small Swedish make, three-cylinder car that he drove around town. He always had a big grin whenever anyone reminded him as he had stopped on Main Street to visit that he had left his “lawn mower” running at the curb. Shawnee County folk will miss Percy Wolverton, but from time to time as life goes on they will have cause to remember some of his philosophy. People will remember for a long time not only his wheel ideas but his verbal ideals for a good life. | |

She was born April 13, 1903, in Silver Lake, to Abraham and Maude Moser Shenk. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1922 and received a double teaching certificate. She was a telephone operator in Rossville and later was employed by Capper Publications in Topeka as a proofreader. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and XYZ Senior Citizens Club, both in Silver Lake, and was a member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 of Order of Easter Star in Silver Lake for 40 years. She was a graduate of the Flo V. Menninger Bible Course. She was a charter member of the Grove Family, Community and Education group for 65 years and a charter member of the Grove Harvest Grange for 38 years. She served for more than 40 years on the Grove Election Board. She married David W. Wonnell on March 18, 1931, in Junction City. They lived on a farm in the Grove community north of Silver Lake for many years. He died Aug. 21, 1984. Survivors include a son, Leonard D. Wonnell, Silver Lake; a brother, Lloyd N. Shenk, Independence, Kan.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Silver Laske. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Grove. On March 24, 1932, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Mildred Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. N Martin of Topeka. To this union two children were born, Margaret Edna and Lawrence Arthur. He is survived by his wife, two children; his father, Joseph Wonnell, two brothers, Daniel Wilson and Samuel A. Wonnell; one sister, Mrs. Florence Evermeier, beside uncles, aunts and cousins. His mother, an infant brother and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Davis preceded him in death. He was a dutiful and loving son and father, a kind and devoted husband and father, a loyal friend and neighbor. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a member of A. F. & A. M., No. 392, of Fostoria, Kansas, whose members conducted their service at the cemetery. He enjoyed playing golf, throwing darts, watching football, fishing, boating and camping with his family. Larry was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Lee. Burial will be in the U.S. [sic U.B.] Cemetery north of Rossville. --- Car fire victim from Rossville ROSSVILLE - A man who died when his vehicle caught fire near here Saturday was tentatively identified Sunday by the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department as Frank E. Wood Jr., 41, of rural Rossville. A sheriff's spokesman said although the body was burned beyond recognition, the vehicle, a 1974 Ford Bronco, was identified as Wood's. The fire occurred about 9:20 p.m. Saturday near the 8200 block of Capper Road, which is 4 1/2 miles north of Rossville. The spokesman said Wood's vehicle was off the road and apparently "high-centered" when the fire broke out. He said both fuel tanks of the Bronco had just been filled, but that the cause of the fire was still unknown. | |

He was born July 13, 1939, to Frank E and Mary Lillard Wood, Rossville. He was married August 5, 1967, in Miami, Okla., to Lucille M. Collins. She survives at the home. Mr. Wood was employed-at Goodyear. He also ran a saw sharpening service and small engine repair shop at his home. He was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, Jimmie Lillard Post 31 of the American Legion at Rossville; and served with the United States Army during the Korean War. | 10897 |  | Obituary- Wood, Melvin 1 Melvin Wood Melvin Richard Wood was born at Cameron, New York, May 18th, 1866, and passed away at his farm home north of Rossville, Monday, August 17th. Mr. Wood came to this state with his parents in 1881 at the age of 15 years and located with his parents north of Rossville. In 1891 he was married to Miss Margaret Ann Taylor who departed this life in 1900. There were four children born to this union. He leaves to mourn his loss two sons, Frank Wood of the home address; Riley Wood of Carbondale, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Rezac of Emmett and Mrs. Pearl Reser of Rossville; one sister, Mrs. W.H. Zickefoose of Emmett; one brother, Dennis Wood of Topeka; two stepbrothers, George Wood of Topeka, and Emmett Wood, Guthrie, Okla.; 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. H.E. Straw. Music was furnished by Mrs. Arthur Wallerstedt, Mrs. C.E. Gresser, Mrs. E.G. Griswold and Mrs. Margaret Witter with Miss Lucille Griswold as pianist. The pallbearers were Frank Schraeder, Frank Page, Hudson McCollough, Emil Kovar and Tom Smatla. Interment was in the Rossville cemetery. | 10899 |  | Obituary- Wood, Richard 1 Obituary Richard Wood was born at Ross, Herefordshire, England, Oct. 17, 1831. When ten years of age he came with his parents to the United States, settling at Cameron, Steuben Co., N.Y. When 27 years of age he was married to Hannah J. Card. Four children were born to this union, George, August, Frank, and Emmett, two of whom, George and Emmett, survive his death. His first wife died 32 years ago in New York state. After her death Mr. Wood came to Rossville and later was married to Mrs. Silvia A. Wood, who was then the mother of Dennis, Melvin and Lizzie Wood. To this last marriage one child was born, Josie, now Mrs. Wm. Reser. Richard Wood settled on the farm owned by him north of town 29 years ago and lived there continuously until his death. He died April 5, 1910, from a stroke of paralysis, aged 78 years, 6 months and 12 days. Mr. Wood was one of the fine old gentlemen of this vicinity. He was admired and beloved by all who knew him for his pleasant and kindly disposition and upright life. | 10900 |  | Obituary- Wood, Richard 2 He practiced the golden rule in his dealing with others and his life was a model of true christian citizenship. Mr. Wood was a great friend of the local newspaper. Once each year he called at the office and with his face beaming with good nature would pay his subscription and tell the editor what a good paper he was making and how much it was appreciated. And then with good wishes for our success he would depart. Each year his steps have grown more feeble and last January it was necessary to assist him into the office and we knew that his work on earth was almost done--that he was even then entering the shadows of the valley of death. He had passed on to a rich reward and while relatives and friends mourn his going, there is solace in the knowledge that all is well with him. Mr. Wood was a member of the Baptist Church. His funeral was held Thursday afternoon, April 7th, from the U.B. Church near his farm and was conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka. A large concourse of neighbors and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect and extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives. The interment took place in the Rossville City cemetery. |
