| 7401 |  | Obituary- Luman, Julie 2 Kills Julie Luman An 18-year-old Rossville High School graduate was killed and a 15- year-old youth critically injured Friday, August 17, 1979, when their small pickup truck smashed into the back of a stopped gasoline tanker truck one and one-half miles north of Delia in Jackson County, authorities said. The victim was identified as Julie Luman, Delia. A Jackson County sheriff’s dispatcher said Julie was a passenger in the truck, which was driven by Bruce W. Lee, also of Delia. A Rossville resident said Lee was the victim’s stepbrother. The resident said the two were on their way to Rossville so Lee could attend football practice. Friday evening, a spokeswoman at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center said Lee was in the facility’s intensive care unit. Sheriff’s officers said he suffered head injuries, two broken arms and facial and shoulder cuts. The sheriff’s dispatcher said the pickup truck ran under the rear of the stopped gasoline tanker truck. Richard Wood, Rossville, had been driving the tanker truck. He was not listed as injured. There was no fire. The Rossville Fire Department was dispatched to the accident scene with its rescue equipment. The Jaws of Life tool had to be used to remove the victims from the wreckage. Deputies said the victim died at the scene of severe head injuries. Her body was taken to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Julie’s obituary is printed elsewhere in this issue. | |
| 7402 |  | Obituary- Luman, Julie 3 18-Year-Old Killed In Two-Car Accident A two-vehicle accident in Jackson county Friday afternoon resulted in the death of an 18-year-old Mayetta woman. Julie Ann Luman was dead at the scene of the accident about 1.5 miles north of Delia on a county road. She was a passenger in a 1973 Datsun pickup truck driven by her step-brother, Bruce W. Lee, 15, also of Mayetta. According to Jackson county sheriff’s reports, the pickup truck ran under the rear of a 1976 Chevrolet gasoline tanker truck driven by Richard E. Wood, 46, Rossville. Lee suffered two broken wrists, cuts to his right shoulder, a cerebral concussion and facial lacerations. Monday morning he was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. There were no other injuries. According to undersheriff Marvin Starr, Wood, who was southbound, had apparently stopped to talk to Oscar Bixby, Rossville, who was northbound on the county road. The Lee vehicle came upon the gasoline tanker and smashed into the back, traveling several feet under the tanker. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, at the Rossville high school gymnasium for Luman. Burial will be at Rossville Cemetery., Penwell-Gable Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Luman was born February 23, 1961, at Oswego, the daughter of Herman and Ilah Marie Lee, and had lived at Mayetta nine years. She attended Delia elementary schools and was graduated from Rossville high school in 1979. She was a student at Clark College, Topeka. Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lee, Mayetta; two sisters, Lisa Lee and Amy Lee, both of the home; a brother, Bruce Lee, of the home; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hoobler, Oswego, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Luman, Chetopa, Mr. and Mrs. Dale McRae, Wichita, and Mrs. Minnie Lee, Wichita; and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Mary Tullis, Bartlett, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Julie Luman Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors of Rossville high school in care of People’s State Bank, Rossville. | 7403 |  | Obituary- Lumley, Myrtice Myrtice Eloise Lumley Myrtice Eloise Lumley, age 96, of Topeka, passed away Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Rossville Health Care & Rehab. Eloise was born February 3, 1920 in Springdale, Kansas the daughter of Bert Edmonds and Agnus Hassett Edmonds. She grew up in Leavenworth County, graduating from Lansing High School. She married Harry Lumley April 9, 1939 in Topeka. He preceded her in death December 7,1989. She is also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Wall; a son in law, C.J. Wall and nine siblings, Merlin, Francis, Verl, Eileen, Edgar Wayne, Eleanor, Jeanne, Thelma and Betty. She is survived by a son, Harry (Becky) Lumley of Cave Creek, AZ; two daughters, Linda Naugle and Alberta Huber, both of Topeka; a brother, David Edmonds of Winchester, KS; seven grandchildren, Scott Wall, Robert Wall, Leann Roberson, Dustin Lumley, Loren Laird III., Jeffrey Allison and Matthew Huber; 12 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Eloise loved her family very much. Eloise and Harry lived on NW Tyler street for 64 years, across from K-Mart and she enjoyed waving at everyone who passed by. She was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed all sports. Funeral services will be Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour before the services on Friday, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. She will lie in state Thursday from noon - 5:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. | 7408 |  | Obituary- Lumpkins, John G. John Lumpkins Dead The sad news of the sudden death of Mr. John Lumpkins of Topeka which reached Rossville last Friday morning was a shock to everyone. He was well known here, having been a citizen of Rossville most of his life and for many years conducted a barber shop at this place. His death was a shock because no one had any reason to expect such news. Mr. Lumpkins was yet a young man and known to be of rugged health. The end was undoubtedly unexpected on his part, for it was all so sudden--taken slightly ill in the evening--the next day he died. A stroke of apoplexy was the cause of his death. Mr. Lumpkins moved to Topeka a little more than a year ago, and it was in Topeka that he died. Last Friday the body was brought to Rossville on the morning train. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, the Rev. John H. Lamb officiating. The church was crowded with his old friends who had come to pay their last respect to the departed. His body was interred in the Rossville cemetery. The obituary follows. John Lumpkins was born near Tecumseh, Shawnee County, Kansas, February 24, 1872. He came to Rossville with his parents when he was yet a child. Here he lived the remainder of his life, except the past year. The past year he lived in Topeka, where he died on February 24, 1910, at 9 o'clock. It is interesting to note that Mr. Lumpkins died on his birthday--being therefore just thirty-eight years old. On January 6, 1897, Mr. Lumpkins was married to Miss Minnie Hawks. His wife and three children are left to mourn the loss of a good husband and father. Five sisters and two brothers survive him. Having been a citizen of Rossville so many years he enjoyed a wide circle of friends, who sorrow with the grief stricken ones and extend their heartfelt sympathy. She later farmed, with Jimmy, having hogs and beef cattle. | 7414 |  | Obituary- Lundin, Dale Man’s Death in Jail Cell Ruled Suicide The body of Dale Louis Lundin, 21, of 835 ½ N. Topeka, was found hanging in a St. Marys jail cell early Sunday morning, reported W.P. McKinnon, Pottwatomie County sheriff. The young man was reported to have been despondent for some time, the sheriff said. A coroner’s jury ruled the death a suicide. The youth was in jail after being arrested about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on a charge of reckless driving. He was born near Mayetta March 23, 1939, and spent three years in the Army. He was a salesman and parts man for Wester Tire Co. of Topeka. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Nora Patton of Delia; his father, Marlin Lundin, 311 Kansas; and three brothers, George and Ralph Lundin of Delia and Darrell Lundin of Silver Lake. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Delia Presbyterian Church with burial in Delia. Hurley Funeral Home of Rossville is in charge of arrangements. | |
| 7415 |  | Obituary- Lundin, Darrell Darrell W. Lundin Darrell W. Lundin, 64, Mayetta, died Friday evening, April 14, 2000, in the emergency room of a Topeka hospital. He was born March 1, 1936, in Holton, the son of Marlin and Nora Hainline Lundin. Mr. Lundin was employed by the Jackson County Highway Department for 36 years prior to his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. On January 16, 1960, he was married to Mary Simecka in Delia. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Lori Anne Hinterweger, Rossville; a brother, Ralph Lundin, St. Marys; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Lundin and Georgie Lundin. Mr. Lundin was cremated. Graveside service and inurnment will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys. | |
| 7416 |  | Obituary- Lundin, Erick ERICK A. (SWEDE) LUNDIN Erick A. (Swede) Lundin, 84, of Topeka, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He was born Sept. 30, 1922, in rural Mayetta, the son of Hans and Maude Striegle Lundin. He graduated from grade school in rural Mayetta. He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and a member and elder of the Central Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Mr. Lundin retired after 30 years of service with Goodyear. He served in the United States Army during the European Theatre in WWII in the Railsplitters Division of the 784th Ordnance Maintenance Company, in Rhineland Central Europe. He married Maxine Z. Murback on February 14,1946 in Holton. They lived in Topeka for 15 years. They made their home in Delia from 1961 until 1979, where he was city mayor for four terms. He was president of the Delia Lions Club, organized and supported the Delia Little League Club for 18 years, a member of Delia United Presbyterian Church. He lived in Ft. Worth, Tex., from 1979 to 1985, where he was a member and elder of the Trinity Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He had lived in Topeka since 1985. He was also a 50 year member of the Golden Rule Lodge No. 90. In his early years, Swede enjoyed playing baseball and softball. Later, he became an avid golfer and enjoyed restoring antique furniture. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; a sister Marge Fox of Holton; seven nieces Darlene Ingram, Lorane Ingram, Sharon Daniels, Sharon Ybarra, Wanda Treinan, Linda Lolli, Tammy Varner; 10 nephews Clif Walder, Marion Walder, Bob Fox, Don Fox, Terry Fox, Ralph Lundin, Don Fleeman, John Lundin, Jackie Lee Lundin, Gary Lundin and a host of great nieces and nephews. He was known by them and many others as Uncle Swede. He was preceded in death by four sisters, one half-sister, four brothers, one half-brother, four nephews and a niece. Funeral services were held Monday, March 5 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in the Mayetta Cemetery. Lundin Jr., 36, Silver Lake, who died Friday in a Topeka hospital. He had Hodgkins disease. He was born May 27, 1933, at Rossville and lived at Delia and Topeka before he moved to Silver Lake about a year ago. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Delia and the Moose Lodge in Topeka. He was a utility relief operator for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company the past five years. He had served in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was married to the former Peggy Myrick. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Debbie Jean Lundin, at home; a son, Larry Ray Lundin, at home; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Lundin Sr., Delia. He was born June 22, 1901, at Spencer, Neb., the son of Carl Henry and Katherine McIntosh Luttig. He moved from Nebraska to the Emmett-Saint Clair area. He was married to Christina K. Hlady Jan. 28, 1934, at Emmett. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Garnett J. Luttig, Calloway, Fla.; two daughters, Alice K. Desbien, Holton, and Theresa D. Milinic, San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Mary Perry, Holton; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home. Father Bob Hasenkamp officiated. Mrs. Jan Bissett, organist, accompanied soloists Jim and Roni Bowers. Dale was born December 2, 1925 near Delia, the son of George and Helen Hladky Luttig. He grew up in the Emmett community and lived there all of his life. He served in the United States Army. Dale was a welder and manufacturer. He had a love for his hobbies, collecting license plates and Maytag engines. At last count Dale had over 80,000 license plates in his collection. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Emmett and a life member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, St. Marys. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Judith. On November 10, 1956 he was united in marriage to Carol Phillips at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his son, David W. Luttig, Emmett; a daughter, Cathy (Denny) Clayton, Rossville; two sisters, Betty Riley, Salem, OR, and Helen Doris McDuff, Henderson, NV; and a granddaughter, Amanda Clayton, Guam and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 21, 2009 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Emmett. Mr. Luttig will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where the family will receive friends after 6:00 and there will be a Prayer Vigil/Rosary recited at 7:00 P.M. Together, they farmed and raised beef cattle. During their retirement they traveled with family in their motor home and enjoyed many great times bowling with friends and watching KC Royals baseball. She will be remembered for her love for her family, the many hours spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her hobby of antiquing, and affection for her pets. Surviving are three sons, Ronald Lutz (Joyce) Topeka, Larry Lutz (Katie), Topeka and Jerry Lutz (Jana), Holton; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Bob Sumner (Margaret), St. Marys, Don Sumner (Peggy), Topeka, Bill Sumner (Kay),Topeka; sisters-in-law Virginia Sumner, Amarillo, Texas, Beth Sumner, Lakewood, Wash., Naomi Sumner, St. Marys, Doris Sumner, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Katherine Sumner, Estes Park, Colo.; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was born Dec. 1, 1916, at Adrian, the daughter of Ira A. and Floye E. (Murrow) Wood. Garnett was a member of the First Baptist Church of Silver Lake and the Fiddlers and Pickers of Kansas. She was a home decorator and also a seamstress. She loved sewing and crafts. Garnett was also a fiddler and formed a band with her sisters. The band played for Senior Citizens groups and put on shows to help build the Silver Lake Senior Citizens Building. She was married to Lester Lutz for 52 years. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1988. Garnett was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol E. Krogman-Wallace, on Jan. 31, 1997; a grandson, Korey Simecka; 3 brothers: Stephen Wood, Merle Wood, and Wayne Wood; and a sister: Margie DeBacker. Surviving are a daughter: Joyce A.
